Sports Illustrated: Montgomery signs two-year extension at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- California coach Mike Montgomery has agreed to a two-year contract extension to remain at the school through the 2015-16 season.

The announcement Monday comes nine months after Montgomery disclosed he had bladder cancer and surgery that left him cancer-free. Montgomery led the Golden Bears to a 24-10 record last season, a runner-up finish in the Pac-12 Conference and a first-round loss to South Florida in the NCAA tournament.

The former Montana, Stanford and Golden State Warriors coach is 88-47 in four seasons at Berkeley. He also helped Cal capture its first league title in 50 years in 2010.

Montgomery thanked the administration for the support and said his staff has "established a strong foundation of success and look forward to continuing to add to the rich tradition of this program."

GOP extremism shocks the establishment again

Remember how Republican states were certain to accept the Medicaid money because hospitals would insist on it? And how establishment Democrats in D.C. were certain the states would accept the bargain? Well, the biggest Republican state isn't having any of it:
Texas turned down an expansion of Medicaid coverage and said it will not create a state-run healthcare insurance exchange, joining the chorus of states that are rejecting two key proposals of the Obama administration?s healthcare overhaul measure.
In a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius released on Monday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose bid for the GOP presidential nomination fell flat this year, rejected both healthcare proposals. The move, which had been widely expected, echoes similar pronouncements by other conservative Republican governors as well as the GOP's overall opposition to the heathcare law.
?If anyone was in doubt, we in Texas have no intention to implement so-called state exchanges or to expand Medicaid under Obamacare,? Perry stated. ?I will not be party to socializing healthcare and bankrupting my state in direct contradiction to our constitution and our founding principles of limited government.
?I stand proudly with the growing chorus of governors who reject the Obamacare power grab. Neither a ?state? exchange nor the expansion of Medicaid under this program would result in better ?patient protection? or in more ?affordable care.? They would only make Texas a mere appendage of the federal government when it comes to health care,? Perry said.
Digby already covered Florida's and South Carolina's insistence on making poor people in those states get sick and die quickly while overburdening the state's emergency health system. I'm sure the Neville Chamberlains in the D.C. Democratic establishment are scratching their heads over this.
Remember: it's not just about the corporate money for these people. Accepting federal dollars for Medicaid helps their big dollar contributors, with very little downside. Ezra Klein thinks states will eventually come around, and he may be right. After all, some states resisted Medicaid when it was initially introduced. But even Ezra notes that the federal government forced states to take a much larger share of the burden for Medicaid and children's health insurance. This expansion is basically gravy for the states, as the federal government foots the entirety of the bill at first, and 90% of it in coming years.
It's not just about giving rich people more money. The modern Republican establishment is most obsessed with enforcing a cosmic law of reward and punishment wherein poor people suffer and die early because they didn't pull themselves up by their bootstraps enough to be rich. It's a matter of principle, and they're more than willing to anger their allies in the hospital, health insurance and pharmaceutical industries to make it happen.
The Ayn Rand nonsense isn't just rhetorical cover to enrich their already wealthy friends. These people really believe in it. They cannot be bargained with and cannot be reasoned with. It's clear that pity and remorse are off the table, and they don't even fear the retaliation of the electorate.

NY man nears 3 millionth mile in beloved '66 Volvo

BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) ? It just keeps going, and going, and going. No, it's not a battery. It's Irvin Gordon's 1966 Volvo P1800S.

Gordon's small, red two-door has well more than 2 million miles on the odometer, the equivalent of nearly 1,176 times across the globe.

The retired schoolteacher from Long Island hopes to reach the 3 million mile mark by next year. He only has 34,000 miles to go.

The 72-year-old Gordon drives his Volvo everywhere. He has held the Guinness World Records mark for High Mileage Vehicle since 2002 and was the first person to hold that record.

"It's just a car I enjoy driving," he said.

He bought his beloved car on June 30, 1966, for $4,150 at the age of 25. "It was a whole year's salary," he said.

Gordon originally wanted the convertible Volvo with air conditioning, but it was too expensive. He paid extra to have an AM/FM radio, though.

"It was $10 extra, and at that time, $10 was a lot. But an AM/FM radio was a big deal," he said.

Gordon's car has just enough room for him and his essentials. His front bumper is filled with pins of his mileage achievements. Even his license plate says "MILNMILER." And his trunk overflows with the many car parts he thinks he might need when on the road.

"I have a set of everything," he said. "If I have it, then I am not going to need it."

Gordon has been taking road trips since he was a kid and continued through his adult years. He says he would just tell his family to pack their things and hit the road. Gordon's two daughters went on his road trips until they outgrew the tiny red car.

"They just couldn't fit in the back anymore. That is when I bought the station wagon," he explained. "Volvo, of course."

His odometer doesn't have enough digits to display the actual mileage, but Gordon has tune-up records verifying it.

Now divorced, Gordon takes road trips alone. With trips to Montreal, Texas and Michigan in just the last month, the last leg of his trip should not be too hard. It took him 21 years to reach the first million miles and 15 more years to reach 2 million. Gordon averages 85,000 to 100,000 miles per year. Most of his trips are for auto shows, but he also takes trips across the country just for a good cup of coffee.

"I have had coffee in every state," Gordon said. "I am my own travel channel."

The avid driver believes in taking care of his car, and he doesn't let anyone else drive it.

"That's why I bought my girls their own cars," he said.

Jordan Weine is a mechanic at Bay Diagnostic, an auto shop based in Brooklyn and a Volvo expert. He says because Gordon takes care of his car, he is able to get high mileage without much change to the car's original mechanics. The car still has the original engine, though it was rebuilt twice in the car's lifetime.

"How high does a redwood grow? If it is not messed with, it will grow," said Weine, who hasn't worked on Gordon's car. "And there are very few redwood trees and the same goes with this. There are very few people that can achieve 3 million miles."

It is clear that Gordon loves his car and he can't imagine getting rid of it.

"Why would I want to get rid of it?" he asked. "Kind of like a good woman."

Gordon's car has brought him fame. Joe Brusack, a mechanic who worked on his car when it was on its millionth mile more than 20 years ago, said it's come a long way.

"I think it was just amazing that he got this far," he said.

Gordon himself is surprised every time he gets into his car and edges closer to his 3 million mile goal. But the miles have taken a toll on the car. Recently, some black tar got into the car's carburetor. He has to get that fixed before he can hit the road again.

Volvo has sent Gordon to trips around the country and the world to represent Volvo in auto shows.

"I don't think (just) any car could do it," said John Maloney, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. "It is a combination of a car beloved by his owner that has gotten Irv to this mileage."

Gordon thinks that his Volvo will last way longer than 3 million miles.

"I have a feeling I'll be dead long before the car."

London Olympics 2012: Britain's team to win a record number of medals claim scientists

Britain will win a record number of medals at the London 2012 Olympics, predict scientists.

The researchers, who accurately forecast the medal haul at three previous games, have calculated Team GB will take home a total of 62 medals.

This tally beats the post-war record of 47 we won in Beijing in 2008 and will place Britain fourth in medal table.

The scientists expect Britain to take 25 golds - six more than in Beijing - and we will only be beaten in the gold standard by the U.S. and China.

Emily Williams, a British research assistant at The Tuck School of Business in New Hampshire, carried out the study, using an economic formula created after the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The figures are based on population, per capita income, past performances of the athletes and the advantage of hosting the games - and not the form of competitors.

These have been the crucial factors dictating national Olympic medal totals over the past four decades, according to economists.

In Beijing, they forecast the U.S. would top the medals table, but China would win the most gold medals, accurately predicting 36 golds for America.

Ms Williams told the Sunday Times: 'It's very exciting for Britain. The formula has been so reliable in the past there's no reason to think it won't be this time.'

Britain can expect 15 extra medals because it is hosting the Olympics with six of those being gold, but Ms Williams admits:' We're not really sure why hosting the Games has such an effect but it does.'

Last week UK Sport, the government's funding body, said it expected team GB to win at least 48 medals, just one more than our haul four years ago.

China is predicted to win more golds than France because its 1.3 billion population compensates for its low per capita income.

Another factor which favours Britain is that countries that did well in Beijing will replicate that in London with Russia, Australia and Germany likely to fall below expectations again.
