6-month-old baby dies even as Chicago homicides fall

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Even in a city with more than 500 homicides a year, it's a crime that shocks the senses: a 6-month-old Chicago girl fatally shot five times while having her diaper changed in the family van.

Shootings and murders are down dramatically from the same point last year, when Chicago had more homicides than any other metropolis in the country, but that statistic means nothing to those mourning Jonylah Watkins.

The infant died Tuesday morning after several surgeries to repair injuries from five bullets that tore through her body the previous afternoon, family spokesman Pastor Corey Brooks said.

"The city of Chicago should be outraged that a 6-month-old baby could be shot and killed in our city,"?Brooks told NBCChicago.com. "It's horrific."

It appears the baby's father, who has an extensive criminal history, was the target, said Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who added that the shooting has "very strong gang overtones."

"This is another tragedy, because no child, certainly not an infant, should be a victim of gun violence,"?McCarthy said at a press conference.

The father, Jonathan Watkins, 28, was shot in the buttocks and the face and was in stable condition Tuesday.

"I was trying to help her,? he told the Chicago Sun-Times after learning his daughter had died. "They told me she didn?t make it."

Gang violence has fueled the bloodshed in Chicago, which ended 2012 with 506 homicides on the books even as overall crime took a downturn.

It was a gang turf war that led to another notorious slaying, the shooting of 15-year-old high-school majorette Hadiya Pendleton just days after she performed during President Obama's inauguration weekend.

The circumstances of Pendleton's death -- an honor student marked for death after she unwittingly set foot on gang territory -- made her a face of the national gun-control debate and sparked a local crime crackdown.

Chicago cops say new tactics are yielding results: Murders are down 26 percent?and shootings are down 19 percent?in the first quarter of this year over the same period last year.

"There's going to be good days, and there?s going to be bad days," McCarthy said after confirming the baby's death. "Today is obviously a bad day.?

McCarthy said no witness to the shooting has come forward, echoing the frustration he expressed after Pendleton's murder, when cops pleaded for an end to the no-snitching credo of the streets.

Brooks offered a $5,000 reward.

"We're going to find who did this and make sure they are brought to justice...We're not going to be afraid. We're going to take back our neighborhood."

Jonylah's grandmother, Mary Young, said the child had been touched by gun violence even before birth, when her mother was grazed in the knee by a bullet while pregnant.

A makeshift memorial is seen in Chicago, Tuesday at the site where 6-month-old girl Jonylah Watkins, and her father were shot.

The Baltimore Ravens are paying the price for winning a Super Bowl.

The NFL champions lost two key components of their defense, linebackers Paul Kruger and Dannell Ellerbe, as free agency began Tuesday. On Monday, they traded star receiver Anquan Boldin, a key to their title run, to San Francisco ? the team the Ravens beat 34-31 to win the championship.

Kruger went north to division rival Cleveland for a five-year, $40 million deal, while Ellerbe headed south to Miami for $35 million over five years. Steelers receiver Mike Wallace joined Ellerbe in choosing the Dolphins.

Baltimore did sign free agent defensive end Chris Canty, who spent the previous four seasons with the New York Giants.

The 49ers didn't go untouched, either. After giving up a sixth-round draft pick for Boldin, they saw tight end Delanie Walker leave for Tennessee.

San Francisco also confirmed the trade of backup quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City, a deal that was known for weeks. The 49ers will receive the Chiefs' second-round pick, 34th overall, in this year's draft and a conditional pick in next year's draft.

The 32-year-old Boldin expressed surprise that he was traded.

"I thought this was the last stop of my career but regardless of the circumstances I came here to win a Championship ... and in February we came home Champions," he said on Twitter.

Ellerbe also tweeted as he moved on to the Dolphins.

"Just wanna take time to THANK GOD for being in this position I'm in! Before I make da BIGGEST DECISION in my life I just wanna thank him!!!" Ellerbe said.

Kruger led the Ravens with nine sacks and added 2? in the playoffs and two in the Super Bowl. But he was too expensive for Baltimore to keep.

Wallace will give Miami the speedy receiver it has sought after getting just three touchdown catches from its wideouts last season. The Dolphins also re-signed free safety Chris Clemons to a one-year deal.

Denver ensured that Peyton Manning will be the Broncos' quarterback through at least 2014.

The four-time MVP's contract called for a guaranteed salary of $20 million in 2013 and 2014 if he was on the Denver roster Tuesday. The final two years of his contract are worth $19 million each, but are not guaranteed.

Coming off multiple neck operations, Manning threw for 4,659 yards and 37 touchdowns last season and was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He turns 37 on March 24.

Kansas City was busy finding support for Smith on both sides of the ball. The Chiefs agreed to a four-year, $16 million deal with tight end Anthony Fasano, a three-year, $12.6 million contract with defensive tackle Mike DeVito, and a three-year deal with Saints backup quarterback Chase Daniel.

Teams also made cuts Tuesday. The biggest were Ryan Fitzpatrick in Buffalo and Nnamdi Asomugha in Philadelphia.

The Bills' starting quarterback was released 1? years after getting a six-year, $59 million contract extension. Fitzpatrick struggled after signing the new deal, and the Bills went 6-10 in 2011 and in 2012.

Buffalo has not made the playoffs since 1999, the longest active streak in the NFL. For now, the Bills' No. 1 quarterback is Tarvaris Jackson.

Bills general manager Buddy Nix said: "Difficult decisions often have to be made and so we are moving forward. Our focus remains on adding another quarterback to our roster and we will continue to explore every option available to us."

Philadelphia released cornerback Asomugha, who two years ago got a five-year, $60 million contract with $24 million guaranteed when he left Oakland as a free agent. Asomugha was a flop in Philly, often victimized in single coverage.

Asomugha was scheduled to make $15 million next season, with $4 million guaranteed.

Earlier, Tony Gonzalez changed his mind and decided to return to the Falcons.

The NFL's career leader among tight ends with 1,242 receptions and 103 touchdowns said he was 95 percent certain he would retire after 2012, but the other 5 percent won out.

Hours before free agency began Tuesday, Gonzalez tweeted:

"The lure of being on such a great team and organization, along with unbelievable fan support was too good to pass up."

The Falcons also agreed to a six-year contract with left tackle Sam Baker, bringing back another key play on a team that came up just short of the Super Bowl.

Also Tuesday:

?Defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma, both implicated in the Saints' bounty scandal, agreed to restructure their contracts to remain with New Orleans.

The 31-year-old Smith and 30-year-old Vilma, both veteran defensive captains, would have taken up about $23 million combined in salary cap space without the redone deals.

?Minnesota finalized the trade of receiver Percy Harvin to Seattle, released 14-year veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield and re-signed right tackle Phil Loadholt. The Seahawks are sending their first-round and seventh-round draft picks this year plus their third-round selection in 2014 to the Vikings for Harvin.

?Tennessee agreed to terms with Buffalo guard Andy Levitre and Walker. Levitre, one of the top offensive linemen on the market, got a six-year deal worth nearly $47 million. He will replace Steve Hutchinson, who announced his retirement earlier Tuesday. Walker will help replace Jared Cook, whom the Titans declined to tag as a franchise player because he wants to be paid more like a receiver. Cook signed a five-year deal with St. Louis.

The Titans waived safety Jordan Babineaux and guard Mitch Petrus.

?Pittsburgh re-signed linebacker Larry Foote and wide receiver Plaxico Burress, and tendered offers to four restricted free agents: receiver Emmanuel Sanders, running backs Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman, all of whom could be starters in 2013, and nose tackle Steve McLendon. Burress should provide depth with the Steelers losing Wallace in free agency, but Burress struggled to get onto the field after returning to the Steelers last November.

Foote also came back to Pittsburgh last season and will stay at inside linebacker, where the other starter, James Harrison, was released this week. Foote got a three-year deal.

?Denver agreed to terms with guard Louis Vasquez, late of San Diego. According to STATS, he has allowed just 11 sacks and had one penalty during his time with the Chargers.

?Tight end Martellus Bennett agreed to a four-year contract with the Bears, leaving the Giants after one season. Defensive tackle Henry Melton signed his franchise tag tender at $8.45 million, and the Bears agreed to a five-year contract with New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl left tackle Jermon Bushrod.

?Cincinnati re-signed defensive ends Robert Geathers and Wallace Gilberry. Geathers enters his 10th season with the Bengals, the longest tenure on the current roster.

"Robert brings us not just fine and consistent play, but leadership and experience," coach Marvin Lewis said. "He's a big part of our success with his own play, and I know our younger guys have talked about how he's made them more effective players."

?Houston cut receiver Kevin Walter, who was due to make $2 million in salary. Walter never became the threat opposite Andre Johnson that the team hoped for. He caught 41 passes for 518 yards and two touchdowns in 2012.

?Carolina cut linebacker James Anderson, a seven-year veteran who set a franchise record in 2011 with 174 tackles.

?San Diego released 11-year veteran tight end Randy McMichael and signed kicker Nick Novak to a four-year contract. The Chargers also agreed to terms with tight end John Phillips and tackle King Dunlap, while losing right guard Louis Vasquez to the AFC West rival Denver Broncos.

?The New York Jets cut nose tackle Sione Po'uha and restructured the contracts of receiver Santonio Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

?Arizona re-signed safety Rashad Johnson to a three-year contract.

?Indianapolis agreed in principle on contracts with tackle Gosder Cherilus, linebacker Lawrence Sidbury, guard Donald Thomas, cornerback Greg Toler and linebacker Erik Walden. Each of the deals is pending a physical.

? The Oakland Raiders cut ties with two former first-round picks by releasing starting receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and defensive back Michael Huff. The Raiders also cut defensive end Dave Tollefson and re-signed cornerback Phillip Adams to a one-year deal before the start of the league year.

?Washington brought back punter Sav Rocca and backup defensive lineman Kedric Golston.

?Houston released receiver Kevin Walter, then lost tight end James Casey to Philadelphia.

Getting the Most Out of Marketing Your Home - Eastside Real Estate ...

Anyone who has sold a house before knows that while ?magical? sales do sometimes happen.? On the eastside, more often selling a home takes a lot of work ? and a lot of marketing. No one can buy your house if they don?t even know it?s for sale. While every marketing plan is different, there are three main considerations to every home marketing plan.

Be Realistic with Your Price Point

Before you do anything else, you need to determine a realistic and workable price point. Personal history and moments have value to you, but buyers can?t see them so they don?t factor into the price. You?ll have to find comparable properties in the Eastside real estate market that are for sale or recently sold and see what similar homes have been able to manage in terms of listing price, and then price based on your goals. Your price is the first thing any potential buyer will notice about your marketing materials, so make sure it?s an eye-catcher.

Declutter, Depersonalise and Detach

The Eastside real estate market is competitive. Before you have photos or videos taken of your home, before you have showings, you have to make your house into somebody else?s house ? a house people will be able to picture themselves in. Removing personal items from the house will go a long way towards making it generic enough for people to apply their imaginations to the rooms.

A little light staging is also a good idea ? if it?s a bedroom, make sure it has a bed in it. If it?s a dining room, put a dining set in there. Remember, it is no longer a matter of showing how you use the rooms. A good strategy is to have a deliverable storage cube brought to the house. This way you can spend a day packing everything up, but you?re not making any permanent decisions ? you?re just storing all of your clutter for later evaluation.

Get the Local Word Out

People look at communities before specific houses. Listing your house involves more than an Internet posting ? you need to make sure that the local agents know your house is on the market, and that local folks looking for a new situation in the community find you. Make sure your agent is plugged into the community, and use every possible avenue at your disposal to get the word out, including local ads, bulletin boards, and local agent showings. Tailor your marketing to highlight the advantages the house has in the community ? location, proximity to amenities and necessities, and ease of access.

Marketing is vital to selling your home, but the marketing has to include a realistic price point, visuals that show your home in a neat and depersonalized manner so potential buyers can imagine themselves in it, and a local focus that highlights why your home is the ideal choice for homebuyers looking at your community.

What's on Your Plate? Stress Management Strategies | Psych Central

What's on Your Plate? Stress Management StrategiesDo you wish there were more hours in the day to get through your to-do list? Have you had a friend ask, ?Are you okay??

If so, were you surprised because you hadn?t even noticed what you were feeling lately? Career, home, and other activities can get overwhelming. When it?s time to take something off your plate, how do you handle it?

  • Recognize your body signals. The time comes when our stressed-out brain can?t take it anymore and our body begins to suffer the consequences. Our neck and back begin to ache. Our sleeping becomes disturbed and our appetite changes. We often get sick and begin to experience pains we didn?t know were possible.

Are you able to recognize your body signals when your plate is getting stacked up too high?

  • Notice your feelings. Are you irritable all the time? Sad, frustrated, angry, overly sensitive and lacking in confidence? Take a look at your feelings and notice if the ?present? you is the ?normal? you. If the answer is no, it?s time to make adjustments.
  • What are your thoughts saying? Individuals with perfectionism tend to have overcrowded plates. Their thinking often includes a set of negative beliefs. These beliefs can distort the way they look at themselves and others. They may think, ?If I don?t say yes, they?ll probably think I don?t care about them, or they?ll hate me.? This is an all-or-nothing type of thinking.

Is your vocabulary full of should and ought-to statements? You may jump to conclusions when you think others are judging you because you are not doing enough or fulfilling others? expectations.

Have you noticed your thinking patterns? Before changing your negative thoughts, you need to become aware of them.

  • Give something up. As difficult as this may be, at one time or another we may need to reconsider what we keep on our plate. I had an acquaintance who often would complain about her plate being too full. I asked her if there was something she could do without. She?d proceed to enumerate all that occupied her and say they were all important for one reason or another. She was not willing to take anything off, but was willing to be a victim of her own choosing. Sadly, she made those around her miserable because she didn?t want to make adjustments. The truth is, we have a choice!
  • Worries. Once there was a psychologist who taught a valuable lesson regarding stress management to her audience. She raised a glass of water that was half full. Everyone expected to hear the lesson about the ?half empty or half full? glass metaphor. To their surprise, the lesson had nothing to do with that. Her object lesson was about holding the glass up and its effect on the person?s arm. The longer it was held, the heavier it became.

She then compared holding that glass with the stresses we endure. She reminded her audience that the longer they hold onto their worries the more burdensome they become. Holding them for a very long period of time can paralyze us.

  • Say no. How did you respond the last time a friend asked you for a favor and you couldn?t say no? Were you concerned about your relationship? What if it?s your boss, professor, employee, or neighbor asking? Is the answer always yes?

You really can choose what you take on. Sometimes individuals believe they can do it all if they?d just organize themselves better. I know some people who are great at keeping and completing their to-do list. They are efficient organizers, yet they exhaust themselves finishing that list. Unfortunately, their fear ? offending someone ? ends up happening because they overextend themselves.

Assertiveness training may be in order if you have a difficult time saying no. Work on your need to please everyone. Remember it?s impossible to please everyone, and you end up losing when you try.

  • Prioritize. Your values and standards come into play here. At the end of the day, what is it that you care about the most? There may be days when you are overscheduled. What will you choose? Someone once said, you are what you do the most. Decide what?s important, count your losses and move on.
  • Find a balance. Nutritionists tell us we need certain amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables each day. What are you putting on your life plate? Orison Swett Marden once said, ?Work, love, and play are the great balance wheels of man?s being.? Are you including play and love activities?
  • Love thyself. Before we can attend to others, we first need to strengthen ourselves and take care of our emotional, physical and mental well-being. Taking 30 to 60 minutes each day to keep ourselves spiritually, emotionally, and physically fit is not unreasonable. In the long run, taking care of ourselves will make us stronger so we can be there for our loved ones.
  • Enjoy yourself. It?s time to make that stacked-up plate lighter and go play with your children, friends, and loved ones. When worrisome thoughts come in, put them on pause until later. Taking a break is healthy and in the long run will help you maintain the balance you need in life. You know yourself ? so do what brings you true joy. Only keep on your plate what ?really? needs to be there!

MakerBot unveils prototype Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, promises easier 3D printing

MakerBot unveils prototype Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, promises easier 3D printing

Well, that was quick. Bre Pettis just started delivering South By Southwest's opening remarks and may well have taken the wraps off the biggest news of the show. Of course, we'll still have to hang out in Austin for a few more days just to, you know, totally make sure, but this really does feel like a doozy. As the MakerBot CEO puts it, "It's a natural progression for us to create a product that makes 3D printing even easier" -- but, let's be honest, few of those who don't have a vested interesting in moving some 3D printers are running around calling the whole process particularly "easy." And while consumer-facing devices like the Replicator, CubeX, Solidoodle, et al. have gone a ways toward making the technology more accessible for laypeople, there's still a fundamental breakdown: the creation of models to be printed.

The maker community has helped on that front, as well, with MakerBot's Thingiverse serving as an unparalleled resource for 3D images, meaning that, once your printer's all set up and calibrated, you can download and print to your hearts delight -- but what if, say, you want to print up something that some kindly soul hasn't designed for you? You could learn a CAD program -- or you could invest in an industrial 3D scanner. The latter option has lead to something of a land rush of companies and individuals looking to break things wide open with an affordable, consumer-facing offering. And while MakerBot still seems a ways away from the final product, the company used SXSW as a platform to unveil a prototype of its MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner.

PFT: Lions could be close to deal with Delmas

Matt HasselbeckAP

Add Titans backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to the pay-cut-or-be-cut club, and at least the veteran passer understands exactly what?s going on.

Hasselbeck said his agent and the Titans are still talking about what his contract will look like, understanding it might not necessarily be the $5.5 million on base salary he stands to collect now. If they can?t agree, he figures he?ll have to look elsewhere.

?Well, yeah, if we can?t come to an agreement, I guess that?s what they?d have to do. That?s just how it goes,? Hasselbeck told John Glennon of the Tennesseean. ?Right now I?m working out hard, getting prepared and ready, trying to have the best year I can. Again, I?m really hopeful that it?s here, but I understand that some things are more out of your control.?

Unlike when he walked in the door two years ago, he?s entrenched as the backup behind Jake Locker, and the Titans are leaning toward the compensation matching that status.

?I believe in what we?re doing. I believe in [general manager] Ruston Webster and [coach] Mike Munchak. I believe in my teammates like Jake,? Hasselbeck said. ?But , . . . anything can happen. Surprises come. We?ll see. I don?t know. Some of it is out of my hands, and some of it is in my hands.

?I?m really wanting to be part of something special, part of something good, something I can be proud of and things like that will far outweigh salary or whatever. My feelings for wanting to stay haven?t changed. My feelings for how easy it?s been for us to plug into this community in Nashville haven?t changed.?

While he?s not going to play for free, Hasselbeck?s approach to this makes it more likely a deal gets worked out that keeps him making a living wage, while the team re-adjusts the books to reflect his status on the depth chart.
