Computer scientists from the University of Bonn have developed a prototype to inspire many research groups

Computer scientists from the University of Bonn have developed a new robot whose source code and design plan is publicly accessible. It is intended to facilitate the entry into research on humanoids, in particular, the TeenSize Class of the RoboCup. The scientists recently introduced the new robot at the IROS Conference (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) in Portugal.

With its white head and black body, "NimbRo-OP" looks almost human. After all, at a height of 95 centimeters, it is almost the size of a small child. Among soccer robots, it counts as a "grown-up." Thanks to light-weight materials, its weight of 6.6 kilograms is, however, clearly less than that of a child. It has a total of 20 drive elements that convert computer commands into mechanical motions. This is also why "NimbRo-OP" is very agile - it has no problems kicking a soccer ball, and it can also get up from a prone position like a human, for soccer players also sometimes fall down.

The robot's source code and design are open source

"We have made very effort to keep the design simple to allow other working groups to also use this robot as a basis for their work, modify and repair it," says Prof. Dr. Sven Behnke, lead of the Autonomous Intelligent Systems working group from the University of Bonn. Source code and design plan of "NimbRo-OP" are open source. This is intended to facilitate entry into research on humanoids, in particular, the TeenSize Class of the RoboCup.

The Bonn researchers used different humanoid robots as the inspiration for their project. "There are also other very interesting robots; but they are clearly smaller than ours," says Prof. Behnke. "But its size is essential for being able to do certain things, such as in robo-soccer." In addition, "NimbRo-OP" has a special wide-angle camera to get a view of the soccer field, and high processing capacity for swift response.

"NimbRo-OP" to participate in RoboCup

This robot, which was recently presented at the IROS Conference (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) in Portugal, is a prototype. "NimbRo-OP is not suitable for consumers," says Prof. Behnke. "Our target group consists of scientists who want to program robots based on this hard- and software." The scientists from the University of Bonn also want to enter their robot in the RoboCup.

This is a first step in the development project. "With this platform, we would like to achieve compatibility with other robots," says the computer scientist. Over the next three years, the development project will be continued together with igus GmbH Kln, an application partner, within a knowledge transfer project entitled "A humanoid TeenSize open-platform soccer robot." Prof. Behnke explains, "The goal of the project is accelerating progress in the humanoid robot area by intensifying the sharing with other groups of researchers."

Robots' soccer skills still inferior to those of humans

Chess computers have already proven that they can best human capabilities. "But humans are still clearly better at soccer than robots," the computer scientist from the University of Bonn reports. The requirements for soccer robots are high; they have to perceive environmental conditions via cameras and inclination sensors, detect the goal posts, opponents and obstacles, and make and implement decisions involving their team members. "There is still much to do to solve all the problems out on the pitch," adds Prof. Behnke.

Robo-soccer as a testing grounds for future everyday applications

The scientists are using the RoboCup to experiment with complex challenges for bipedal robots that can potentially be used in many practically relevant environments beyond soccer. "For example, they are capable of using tools, climbing stairs, and passing bottlenecks that are too narrow for wheeled or tracked robots," explains Prof. Behnke. In addition, they can also use human facial expressions, gestures and body language for communicating.

He adds, "Our goal is to stop re-inventing the wheel over and over; by using an open platform together with other researchers, we want to find solutions while saving on effort and expenses." The working group around Prof. Behnke is the most successful humanoid team worldwide at the RoboCup, and with wins in eleven individual competitions, quite likely even the most successful RoboCup team overall.

Romney making a serious play for Pennsylvania

It's a tradition for Republican presidential candidates to pour money into Pennsylvania with little to show for it -- the state hasn't picked a Republican for the office in 24 years. But a week before the election, the Romney campaign says it is making a serious play for the Keystone State.

In a memo released Tuesday, campaign manager Rich Beeson argued that Pennsylvania is a "unique opportunity" for Romney. And the campaign seems to be putting its money where its mouth is, placing statewide ad buys that should begin airing on television Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

"The western part of the Keystone State has become more conservative (and President Obama's war on coal is very unpopular there), and Mitt Romney is more competitive in the voter-rich Philadelphia suburbs than any Republican nominee since 1988," the memo states. "This makes Pennsylvania a natural next step as we expand the playing field."

Recent polls show that the Romney campaign may be on to something. Romney began to gain on President Obama in September and that continued in October after his strong performance in the first debate. The TPM PollTracker Average has Obama leading Romney by just three points.

Since Romney's post-debate bounce, the campaign has claimed that the momentum in the race remains with the former governor, a strategy that the Pennsylvania ad buys fits into as well. But the Obama campaign called Romney's proclaimed efforts to expand the map a bluff.

"The Romney campaign wants you to think it's expanding the map, but it's not," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said on a conference call with reporters Monday, after news that a super PAC supporting Romney was running ads in Minnesota and Pennsylvania. "They tried this before: a month ago they were going to surge in Michigan, then they weren't. A couple of weeks ago too they were going to surge in Maine...then they weren't."

Nevertheless, the Obama campaign will also begin running ads in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh markets in a response to the super PAC. On Monday, the campaign said it would do this out of an abundance of caution.

If a last-ditch Republican effort to win Pennsylvania sounds familiar, that's because Sen. John McCain did it in 2008. Two weeks before that election, McCain's political director held a conference call with reporters in which he argued McCain had a good shot at winning the state even though polls at the time generally showed McCain trailing Obama by 10 to 15 points. Ultimately, Obama won the state by 10 points.

Though 2012 is not 2008, this is the scenario the Obama campaign recalled in their response to Romney's Pennsylvania effort.

"Three things are now absolutely clear in this race - we have a significant early vote advantage in states from North Carolina to Nevada, there is no Romney momentum in the battleground states, and the Romney campaign has found itself with a tremendously narrow and improbable path to 270 electoral votes," Messina said in a statement Tuesday, responding to new Romney ad buys. "Now, like Republicans did in 2008, they are throwing money at states where they never built an organization and have been losing for two years."

Romney's first ad in Pennsylvania touts his commitment to the coal industry -- and arguing that the state's coal industry has suffered under Obama:

Samsung gets official with the Galaxy Premier 465inch HD Super AMOLED, 8MP camera, GS III styling

If Samsung took a wrong turn with its brand-diluting Galaxy S III Mini, then the much-leaked Galaxy Premier is where it gets back on track. The phone keeps the outward visage of the Galaxy S III and makes only modest sacrifices in order to reach a wider audience. These include a slightly shrunken 4.65-inch screen, which still blazes away with a full 720 x 1,280 Super AMOLED panel, an acceptable dual-core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The cameras haven't been messed with -- we're still looking at an 8-megapixel rear and a 1.9-megapixel front-facer -- while connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. So far, the phone has only been made official in the Ukraine, where it's been pegged for a November release and priced at 5,555 Ukrainian hryvnias -- an exotic-sounding figure that very roughly translates to $680.

Hurricane Sandy Sinks the HMS Bounty

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Bounty was en route to St. Petersburg, Florida, for a public display in two weeks
  • Ship used in 1962 film "Mutiny on the Bounty" sinks off North Carolina coast
  • Three people fell overboard, but only one made it to a life raft
  • The Coast Guard says 14 rescued crew members are "in good health"

Have you been affected by Hurricane Sandy? If so, share your images and footage with CNN iReport, but please stay safe.

(CNN) -- Three people washed off their crippled ship and engulfed by Atlantic waters roiled by Hurricane Sandy scrambled for help on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard said, but only one of them made it to safety.

When the HMS Bounty's crew members realized their lives were in danger off the North Carolina coast in the dark morning hours, they made a short journey they hoped they'd never have to take -- to two waiting life rafts.

But only 13 of the 16 people aboard got off the ship safely, initially, and only one of the three washed overboard made it into a raft, Coast Guard Vice Adm. Robert Parker told CNN.

The two missing crew members face "extraordinary conditions" in the frenzied ocean where rescue efforts intensified, Parker said.

The survival drama involving the sailing ship and its stranded crew played out 90 miles off the Atlantic Coast churned by Sandy's fury.

CNN meteorologists say the water temperature varies greatly in that part of the ocean because of the jet stream. So the water could be anywhere from 50 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on where the missing men are located.

All of the HMS Bounty's missing crew members were wearing orange survival suits with strobe lights designed to keep them afloat, warm and easy to find.

"But in these conditions, it's very problematic," Parker said, adding that a timely deployment of search-and-rescue aircraft and ships gives the missing a chance.

A C-130 aircraft and a helicopter have been monitoring the area around the shipwreck of the Bounty, a three-masted ship that appeared in classic adventure films.

Two Coast Guard cutters were en route to the scene to help with search-and-rescue, with one expected to arrive later on Monday and the other expected on Tuesday, Parker said.

Coast Guard helicopters plucked 14 people out of two lifeboats around 6:30 a.m., Petty Officer Brandyn Hill said.

"The first guy we pulled up, he was really happy to see us. That's for sure," said Aviation Survival Technician 2 Randy Haba, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. "We got him up there, and he was all excited and saying, 'That's a good job,' and everything was great. He was just a little cold, but he was good to go."

The life boats were designed to hold 25 people and had canopies for shelter against pelting rain and winds.

All of those rescued arrived at the Coast Guard air station in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and were in good health, Parker said. Initial reports said 17 crew members were aboard but the Coast Guard later corrected that number.

The Coast Guard said it has "diminished search-and-rescue capabilities" as Category 1 Hurricane Sandy batters the U.S. East Coast. More sea rescues prompted by Sandy were reported in Delaware Bay.

The Coast Guard received an emergency call from the ship's owner Sunday after the 80-foot vessel lost power and started taking on water, the Coast Guard said.

Rescuers picked up an emergency locator beacon and an HC-130 aircraft was dispatched, where the plane made contact with the crew.

The Bounty departed New London, Connecticut, for St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 25, according to the ship's Facebook page.

Facebook postings bearing that date say things such as "I'm sure that Hurricane Sandy will be a major consideration when Bounty leaves for St. Petersburg later today," and "Bounty will be sailing East out to sea before heading South to avoid the brunt of Hurricane Sandy."

The ship was scheduled to arrive at the Pier in St. Petersburg as early as November 7 for a public display on November 10 and 11, the Pier's general manager, Carol Everson, said Monday. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention and Vistors Bureau is promoting "The HMS Bounty Returns To The Pier" on its website.

Everson said it's hard to believe the Bounty, which has docked in St. Petersburg for long stretches since the 1970s, is buried under the ocean.

"It had such a history, not only because of 'Mutiny on the Bounty,' but it's been a great part of St. Petersburg for so many years. It's going to be missed," Everson said. "It had a majestic look with its tall masts. It had an aura about it."

While following the ship's Facebook timeline, you can read a mixture of trepidation and attempts at soothing fears.

On Saturday, this post appeared: "Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision... NOT AT ALL... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is... A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!"

No one responded to the contact e-mail or phone number listed on the ship's website and Facebook account.

The Bounty was used in the making of 1962's "Mutiny on the Bounty," starring Marlon Brando, as well as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," according to the ship's Facebook page.

The ship was once owned by famed America's Cup winner and CNN founder Ted Turner. He acquired the Bounty in 1986, when he purchased the rights to the MGM film library for Turner Broadcasting.

Sandy is evoking memories of the "nor'easter" that struck off New England in 1991 and inspired the best-selling book and movie "The Perfect Storm."

Ray Leonard, who survived that storm on his sailboat before the Coast Guard rescued him, said being besieged by high winds and waves can be exhausting, but sometimes sailors just have to deal with that physical discomfort.

"You don't really have time to think about much outside, because there's always about six jobs that need doing," Leonard said Monday.

Leonard said he never felt terribly vulnerable in '91. However, he said, Hurricane Sandy's immensity poses more of a quandary for sailors.

"The one I was in was different, because you could do something. In Sandy, you can't do much," Leonard said.

CNN's Belle Reynoso, Thom Patterson, Meridith Edwards, Mike Ahlers, Sean Morris and George Howell contributed to this report.

These Android apps help you get in shape

It wouldn?t be entirely good if you were just to sit around and play games on your Android phone all day. You need to get out and stretch those leg muscles every once in a while, and since there are hundreds of apps designed to enhance your workouts, you might as well take your Android phone with you! Today?s post covers some of the neat apps out there to help you get or stay fit.

Runkeeper is a fitness app that uses your GPS to track your activity. When you first turn on the app, you will be prompted to make sure your phone?s GPS is turned on and then prompted to set up an account with Runkeeper. If there are problems getting a strong GPS signal, the app will let you know about it. In general, the setup is very simple. You can set the units, primary display, get audio cues for different items, set up Facebook and Twitter, and of course your personal profile.

The layout of the app is also very simple, as there are four main items in the menu. The Start tab is is where you select the type of physical activity such as running, hiking, skiing, swimming and the type of workout. There are some pre-made workouts, but you can set up your own. The next tab is Goals, where you can set long term workout goals. The Activity tab will have a log of what you have done, and finally there here is the Settings tab. The app will sync your completed activity information with their website, where you can view your stats online and even share them with friends.

When you first start Runtastic, you will need to set up an account via email or Facebook. There is a basic, free version of the app and a Pro version, and the latter sports extras such as voice feedback, live tracking, heart rate sensors, auto-pause, and geo-tracking.

You can access Runtastic?s four screens by swiping back and forth. There is the History screen, which has your past activities, the Map screen, the Go Pro screen (in free version) which gives you all of the extras, and finally the Main screen. On the Main screen, you can select the type of workout: Basic, Workout Goal, Manual, Routes, with each having their own options. After setting your workout, you can select the activity from a long list. When done, hit the Start Workout button and begin. The app will track your pace, speed, and so much more. As a bonus, you can can sync Runtastic with MyFitnessPal.

This is the official app for Sports-tracker.com. As with the other services, you create an account and link it to the website. On their website and within the app, you can access a map of the local area and see what other users are up to. In my area alone, there are currently over 12 users who have uploaded their results. You can add other users to your friends list through the app or via Facebook, and sharing and connecting is strongly encouraged.

The main homepage of the app provides a quick summary of all of your workouts, time spent and energy used. When ready, simply click the Start New Workout button. Next select the activity and the auto-pause feature. The main activity screen will appear and shows your time, distance, speed, and a map of where you are. There is a button to allow you to listen to your favorite mp3s and to take photos as you work out. When done, the app will upload your info to your online account and put it in your diary. There are a number of options you can set in the app, such as your heart rate belt, altitude offset and GPS filtering.

Active.com is a thriving online community for folks that are looking for activities in which to participate. While this app does not track your progress or monitor your heart rate, it will help you find things to do to help you get more fit.

The app is broken down into four sections. There is Read Articles, where you can read articles on a variety of topics. The Favorites section is where your bookmarked articles and activities will be listed for quick reference. The View Your Events section is where you can see what you have done. The main section is Activities. Here you can see what is going on around you. The app allows you to set the location, search radius, sort of date, and search specific types of activities. After you put in your criteria, a list will appear. Click on an item and a new window will open with the specifics. You can favorite the event, see it on the map, get more details, and many times register for it. The app makes it very easy to find stuff to do!

Being active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. It is too easy these days, with all of our technology to just sit around. So get out there, and let your Android phone help you!

Mechanism found for destruction of key allergy-inducing complexes

Monday, October 29, 2012

Researchers have learned how a man-made molecule destroys complexes that induce allergic responses ? a discovery that could lead to the development of highly potent, rapidly acting interventions for a host of acute allergic reactions.

The study, which will be published online Oct. 28 in Nature, was led by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Bern, Switzerland.

The new inhibitor disarms IgE antibodies, pivotal players in acute allergies, by detaching the antibody from its partner in crime, a molecule called FcR. (Other mechanisms lead to slower-developing allergic reactions.)

"It would be an incredible intervention if you could rapidly disconnect IgE antibodies in the midst of an acute allergic response," said Ted Jardetzky, PhD, professor of structural biology and senior investigator for the study. It turns out the inhibitor used by the team does just that.

A myriad of allergens, ranging from ragweed pollen to bee venom to peanuts, can set off IgE antibodies, resulting in allergic reactions within seconds. The new inhibitor destroys the complex that tethers IgE to the cells responsible for the reaction, called mast cells. Severing this connection could improve IgE-targeted allergy treatment.

The first time a potential allergen enters the body, some people respond by making allergen-specific IgE antibodies. These antibodies stick around long after the initial allergen is cleared from the body. Most of the antibodies get snagged by IgE-specific receptors called FcRs, which are exposed on the surface of mast cells. The mast cells are then primed to react the next time a person encounters the allergen.

Dissociation of this IgE-FcR interaction is a sought-after goal of allergy treatment for a good reason: IgE-coated mast cells are grenades of histamine, and re-encountering the allergen is equivalent to pulling out the clip. When an allergen makes a return visit, it binds to the pre-loaded IgE on the mast cell surface, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators ? including histamine ? that promote the allergic response. As allergy sufferers are well aware, these nasty reactions can occur within a matter of seconds. In a severe allergic response, sudden anaphylactic shock and death can be the result.

The key to actively disabling the allergic response lies in the separation of IgE from the FcRs on the surface of mast cells. But separating these dangerous couples is a tall order because their interaction is extremely stable ? sensitizing the mast cells for weeks. Currently available treatment using omalizumab (an anti-IgE antibody sold under the trade name Xolair) can block new interactions between IgE and FcR, but it is not designed to pry the molecules apart once they've formed a bond on the surface of a mast cell. So Xolair can dampen the allergic response, but as stated on the product's website: "Xolair is not a rescue medicine and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks."

While simply blocking IgE binding is helpful for some allergy sufferers, when it comes to the rapid quenching of an acute allergic response, "what you'd really like to do is get rid of it," said Jardetzky. Along with scientists at the University of Bern, his team discovered that an engineered protein inhibitor called DARPin E2-79 stripped IgE from the mast cell receptor. Using this inhibitor, "an interaction that normally lasts for hours or days in terms of its stability is stripped off in a matter of seconds," said Jardetzky.

DARPin E2-79 is one of a family of engineered inhibitors containing protein-binding regions called ankryin repeats. While Jardetzky's group was using structural biology and biophysical approaches to probe the weak spots in the IgE-FcR interaction, scientists at the University of Bern were tinkering with DARPins that dampened IgE's disastrous effects. The collaboration of the two groups resulted in the characterization of DARPin E2-79, an inhibitor that goes beyond mere blockade to actively disassemble the IgE-FcR power couple.

Jardetzky's group solved E2-79'S structure and used this information to model its interaction with the IgE-FcR pair. Then, using sensitive biochemical techniques that detect step-by-step binding interactions between molecules, the teams were able to tease out the mechanism that the inhibitor uses to break the IgE-FcR bond.

The researchers found that E2-79 hastens the separation of the two molecules by taking advantage of a moment of weakness in the relationship between IgE and FcR. IgE maintains its interaction with FcR using two contact points, and occasionally one of these points releases while the other one keeps the pair together. Normally this brief looseness isn't enough to separate the couple, but E2-79 can swoop into the small space between them, effectively driving the couple apart.

While E2-79 is the first molecule to display these IgE stripping characteristics, Jardetzky hopes that this work will stimulate the discovery of smaller compounds capable of working even more efficiently. Drug developers generally expect large macromolecules like E2-79 to be less potent than small molecule inhibitors and unlikely to be able to disrupt complexes, so the fact that E2-79 worked so well was a surprise. Small molecules are more amenable to oral administration, and are easier and cheaper to manufacture than large macromolecules. "Now we're in the hunt for a small molecule that could have this kind of activity. That would be the real hit," said Jardetzky.

The discovery of E2-79's mechanism of IgE inhibition could lead to rapid discoveries from other labs as well. Now that scientists know what mechanism to look for, they may be inspired to dig back through freezers full of IgE inhibitors that were identified years ago, said Jardetzky. In the light of techniques described in this study, perhaps once-neglected inhibitors will show new promise in the treatment of allergic disease.

Profs Admit Defeat! | Bwog

All across campus people rejoice at the receipt of emails from sullen professors. Essays are pushed back and classes are cancelled. A dastardly few, however, plan to force students to attend ?online seminars? through Courseworks or some such wizardry.

From some of our fav professors:

Lit Hum:?I?m holed up in my apartment with my research, your midterms, and a slow-cooker full of vegetarian chili, and I?m more than willing to write emails back and forth to you

Julie Crawford:?Classes are indeed canceled. Papers however can be delivered to a safe house upstate. Just kidding.

Dean Awn:?As you may or may not know, New York is paralyzed by any kind of vaguely extreme weather event. That kind of weather is supposed to occur only in Oklahoma, which, in some sense, deserves it. Yes, New Yorkers are wimps; yes we are pathetic, arrogant blowhards?but we are always very trendy, which is much more important.

Creative Writing Department:?The weather outside is supposed to be frightful /?I hope where you are is delightful

Puccini & the 20th Century:?Stay dry! And if you find yourselves stranded in Brooklyn without an adequate supply of red wine and protein bars, feel free to let me know.

And the worst:?Since tomorrow?s lecture has also been canceled, you will need to submit your midterm exam online via the Courseworks site for our class.

Top Rated Desktop Computer Virus Defense Computer Software ...

Number of View: 13

With all the spread of technology, plenty of people on the planet are capable to communicate by the online world. This has decreased the gap in between persons to just a fraction of a second. The main backbone of information and facts technologies is computers. These can either be private computers, key frame computers and even super computers. All computers use each hardware and software program so that you can operate. The operation of this machine can on the other hand be easily hampered by specific applications that are created by malicious consumers. These programs are usually named virus or malware. So, how do I take away laptop or computer viruses making use of anti adware software package? Making use of a premium quality anti adware and spyware software package has assisted to clear up my Computer of annoying pop ups and improved its speed substantially.

The first step is figuring out which malware has attacked your technique. It is actually known that each malware makes a machine behave in a different way in comparison to other people. Try operating your program a variety of occasions as you keenly watch to determine how the machine behaves. Take notes on any abnormal operation that you simply frequently usually do not encounter together with your laptop.

Using the abnormal operations, you possibly can do a web-based study to identify which virus it?s. Check your points against what each and each and every virus is anticipated to perform to a technique. Any virus which has equivalent points for your notes should be noted down. The list you?ll end up with can easily be decreased to a handful of malware by checking the on deleting these with incredibly few points associated to them.

Right after you know which virus is in your machine, the next step is figuring out which anti-virus or anti-malware you really should use. There is a variety of anti-virus application in the industry. Deciding on the very best may very well be hard. In spite of this, nearly all of these anti-virus programs are in general made to attack specific viruses.

Prior to getting an anti-virus software package, make sure that it can be a genuine plan from the manufacturer and that it truly is with the latest model. An antivirus that was meant for viruses six months ago at the majority of the time, won?t have the ability to handle your viruses. Nevertheless, most of this antivirus is often updated more than the web so lengthy as you have got the genuine one particular.

Install the application to your machine. This takes a short time based on the size on the file. After the installation has been completed, restart your system. You ought to then open the installed antivirus then run it. It is advised not to use your machine for other items at this time. The plan will determine those applications that are malware since it checks every one of the files within the method. It is going to then ask if it must heal and delete the files. Accept that command as well as the malware applications might be gone.

At times, this procedure may very well be tough to use particularly on these viruses that may not permit your program to start. Right here, one might be forced to first format the difficult drive and install new operating system just before he or she can use the anti virus.

Do not waste time considering to your self: how can I get rid of computer system viruses employing anti adware software package? Get started and save your files from receiving corrupted. I?m glad that every one of the spyware, adware and viruses on my pc are all gone now all thanks to premium quality application which I downloaded and would extremely advise it.

Text, don't call, once Sandy hits, say carriers

2 hrs.

Wireless carriers have made extensive preparations to deal with the impact of Hurricane Sandy, and are asking customers to do the same. Among the best things you can do to help keep your phone battery going and to ease network congestion is to limit your voice calls???keep them short???and to send text messages instead.

"Limit non-emergency calls to save battery power and free up wireless networks for emergency workers and operations and send brief text messages instead," Verizon Wireless says in a hurricane preparedness statement. "When the network gets busy, texts have a higher chance of getting through the first time and can be more efficient."

Among other tips offered by Verizon, AT&T,?Sprint and T-Mobile:

  • Keep phones and phone accessories???batteries and chargers???in sealed plastic bags?to avoid water damage.
  • If you have an extra phone battery and you?have power, charge that battery so it's ready.
  • Add to your phone's contact list all key emergency phone numbers and email addresses, including police,?fire and rescue agencies; schools and service people.
  • If you are being evacuated, forward home or work phone calls to your wireless number.
  • Use your phone's camera to take photos or video of your property and valuables before the storm hits, so you have "before" photos if your home suffers storm damage.
  • If cell service is down in your area, but your home Wi-Fi network is working, switch to Wi-Fi on your phone.
  • Expect high-call volume, which can lead to network congestion. If that's the case, you'll hear "fast busy" signals on your wireless phone (or a slow dial tone on your landline phone). If that?happens, hang up, wait several seconds and then try the call again. That allows your original call data to clear the network before you try again.

For additional tips on conserving your cellphone's battery, see NBC News' Bob Sullivan's Facebook page here. He says:?

How to conserve cell phone power during the storm: a nice set of tips. 1) Airplane mode 2) Turn off cell, wifi to gadget isn't searching for networks til you need them. Added to this, I have my auto jump-start battery in the house, which has a convenient USB port, too. Yours might at least have a cigaretter lighter 12V out ...?use a car charger or converter with that. HT to @steverubel

In advance of Sandy, all carriers have been deploying portable cell sites and mobile emergency generators?in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast?that can replace damaged cell towers. Carriers?are also coordinating their work with local and emergency agencies.

You can read more about your carrier here: Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

The Dohvin Tree

The World Tree is dying, and all the world is descending into chaos. Are there still heroes left who will be able to stand and fight to prevent the promised apocalypse of legends?

Magic can do just about anything in this RP save for making you invulnerable to harm and bending time and space. Here we can discuss magic and all its capabilities so that anyone who wants to use magic will know what they can and cannot do in the RP. If you have any questions or concerns related to magic, please ask them here.

Magic is produced via incantation in this RP. The longer the incantation, the more powerful the spell. The stronger the mage, the faster they can chant and use more powerful spells.

Here is an example of a basic incantation used by brand new mages to use a basic fireball attack: "O Fire, alight my path and incinerate my enemies."

A longer, and more powerful incantation would be the following: "O Fire, alight my path and incinerate my enemies. Bring them to the gates of the netherworld and let them bask in your heat for all eternity."

These two incantations are just samples and are not set in stone for the incantations you might want to create if you are playing as a mage character. Feel free to create your own incantations, but keep them simple to start with something similar to the first example so that we know that you have room to grow as a character.

So once again, if you have any questions or concerns regarding magic, please voice them here and I will get back to you as quickly as I can.

Penguin and Random House complete merger

Writers and readers' groups say there will be less diversity and less price competitiveness because of the merger.

The new venture, to be named Penguin Random House, will become the world?s largest publisher and control about 25 percent of all books published in the US.

The decision (about which rumors leaked last week)?illustrates a growing trend in the publishing industry toward consolidation as a means to provide a more united front against the changes the industry is facing, including the rise of digital books, the growing power of web retailers like Amazon, and the erosion of traditional bricks-and-mortar bookstores.

Sylvia Plath: 10 quotes on her birthday

?The consumer publishing industry is going through a period of tumultuous change, propelled by digital technologies and the giant companies that dominate them," Pearson Chief Executive Marjorie Scardino said in an email to staff, according to Reuters. ?The book publishing industry today is remarkable for being composed of a few large, and a lot of relatively small companies, and there probably isn't room for them all ??they're going to have to get together.?

By merging, the companies ?will create a publishing giant that will have more heft at a time when the book business is being rocked by the rise of online retailers and e-books,? writes the Wall Street Journal.

?Together, the two publishers will be able to share a large part of their costs, to invest more for their author and reader constituencies and to be more adventurous in trying new models in this exciting, fast-moving world of digital books and digital readers,? said Marjorie Scardino, Pearson's chief executive.

Under the terms of the agreement, Bertelsmann (Random House) will own 53 percent of the joint venture while Pearson (Penguin) will own 47 percent.

As many have pointed out, the union of the two publishing houses will result in a medley of odd bedfellows, including the likes of Patricia Cornwell, Nora Roberts, erotic fiction writer E.L. James, George R.R. Martin, and 2012 Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan.

To some, however, the literary matrimony is anything but happily ever after. Writers and readers? groups are speculating there will be less competition, less diversity, and less price competitiveness as a result of the merger.

?Telecom companies, airlines, banks ??it's hard to think of a single high-stakes merger that's resulted in lower prices and more innovation,? writes the LA Times. ?It's pretty simple: The less competition you have, the less pressure there is to fight for customers? With only a handful of major players, it seems likely that sellers will be free to set their own prices, rather than reflect the actual cost of distributing literature in digital form, which is fairly minuscule.?

?For those who love to read,? continued the Times, ?admittedly, a dying breed ? this isn?t good news.?

Why are men and women smoking cigarettes while serving in the ...

(NaturalNews) The following is a recent interview with retired Navy Commander Donald E. Minnich, who smoked during service for 20 years, and who served in three wars, including WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Reporter: "So you were in WWII and you smoked? When did you actually start smoking?"

CDR Minnich: "I served in WWII, at the end, aboard the U.S.S. Pine Island (AV12) in Antarctica, in 1946. I started smoking before I joined the Navy at age 17. At enlistment, I was up to about half a pack a day - they were Camels. In Hawaii, around 1951 - 1952, I quit cold turkey, mainly because I was on the swim team and going to the gym. In 1955, though, I began again, and increased how many I smoked due to my stressful job in engineering - running the plant on the ship. Over time, I was on three different destroyers, and got up to smoking two packs a day."

Reporter: "And how about when you were in Korea and Vietnam?"

CDR Minnich: "I was in Korea around 1950, on a ship headed to the Philippines. I got stationed at the American Embassy. I was smoking a pack a day then - Camels, no filters. I was then stationedon USS Genesee, a gas tanker, which had a crew of about 80, of whom at least 60 percent smoked, and they were all pack-a-day smokers. Smoking was never allowed on deck, only inside. I was commissioned (as officer) in 1955.

I quit smoking in 1963 in Washington, D.C., while on shore duty. At that time I was smoking two and a half packs a day, but I quit cold turkey. After that, I never smoked again."

Reporter: "What about smoking on the ship and on land, isn't it a hazard that would give away position, from the heat, the smoke, the light from the lit end?"

CDR Minnich: "The Navy has what is called a 'smoking lamp,' which signifies when the crew can smoke and when they cannot.

Reporter: "How do the military get their cigarettes?"

CDR Minnich: "Oh, well, cigarettes are pretty easy to come by, I mean, they're at the bases, at ports and in towns, where they were pretty cheap, and just about everywhere."

Let's reflect on that conversation and the medical tribulations of serving and smoking in today's wars. If the commanders and other leaders don't mind, and they can smoke themselves, does that make it okay? One cold, hard fact is that quitting smoking before the mid 1960s was much, much easier than it is today. Cigarettes are juiced up with ammonia now to make the nicotine up to 35 times as strong and addictive. This is the major "toasty vapor" hook that sucks "ex-smokers" back in when they try to quit cold turkey nowadays. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

Active duty military personnel smoke at much higher rates than the general population: 32 percent compared to 21 percent, respectively.

Smoking compromises troop readiness.

Smoking imposes high health costs for Dept. of Defense and the Veterans Affairs.

Smoking is one of the best predictors of military training failure, especially during fitness evaluations.

Smokers are more likely to sustain injuries, especially musculoskeletal ones.

Smokers increase their stress instead of decreasing it by lighting up. Surprise!

It lowers visual acuity and night vision.

It decreases cognitive ability and impairs respiratory function which in turn affects aviation performance and diving.

2005 Military smokers by branch

Army: 38 percent smoke regularly, but 15 percent are considered "heavy" smokers*.
Navy: 32 percent regulars and nine percent heavy.
Marines: 30 percent regulars and almost 10 percent heavy.
Air Force: 25 percent regulars and almost eight percent heavy.
*(heavy smokers were tallied at a pack-a-day or more).

Rates were nearly double that for deployed service members in Iraq, and are probably similar for those in Afghanistan. (http://www.lung.org)

One cigarette always turns into more and more. It almost always starts as, "Can I bum a cig." Then, within in a few months or a year, it's a pack a day.

Let's just look at the most serious ways cigarettes endanger the military, their job, and those serving around them:

Many necessary and vital abilities are compromised, not to mention general health. (http://www.ttac.org)

Cigarettes are detrimental to cardio: Long distance biking and leg workouts become seriously compromised.

Cigarettes compromise rescue abilities, long distance swimming, treading water, holding breath under water, long distance "ruck" marches with 25 to 100 pounds of equipment and weaponry, especially up hills.

It's very dangers to light up during night watch, giving away position with the heat, the smoke, and the light.

If you have a panic disorder, statistics show that you're MORE LIKELY to smoke cigarettes. Mixing anti-anxiety, anti-depression and PTSD medications with cigarettes can be lethal. This compounds the issues beyond belief. In their attempt to "manage negative feelings," the military are creating a montage of new ones by ingesting ammonia, bleach, pesticide, formaldehyde, and chemical coated tar. (http://ptsd.about.com/od/relatedconditions/a/PTSDsmoke.htm)

The added stress of serving multiple tours of duty in the Middle East is compounded by repeat cigarette use.

Statistics show that many of the tobacco users in the military DID NOT SMOKE before they entered the service. Over 40 percent surveyed said cigarettes are available at installations. This costs the Dept. of Defense about 1.6 BILLION DOLLARS per year for extra medical care, hospitalization and lost days of work.

Dragging "once in a while" smokers into the "pack-a-day misery" is big business. Do you think Big Tobacco cares if you're in the military or not? Do you think Big Tobacco cares if you're 17 years old or 50? Do you think Marlboro, Camel, Winston and Merit care if you're serving in the Middle East and you can't quit smoking cigarettes? They're too busy making money, not saving lives. Big Tobacco has been engaged in unethical marketing for decades. Joe Camel was marketed at kids. Doctors used to recommend Camel cigarettes in 1930s advertisements.

What happens when you mix 4,000 chemicals with PRESCRIPTION medication? What happens when the ammonia and the pesticide mix with medications? Do they sweat out those toxins during the most serious "fight or flight" situations? Aren't those toxins swimming around in their blood, affecting moods, thought, and motivation during situations which require the ultimate mental clarity? You bet they are. (http://www.doitnow.org/pages/203/3.html)

In fact, use of prescription "psychotropics" has skyrocketed among U.S. military personnel in recent years, according to an investigation by Military Times.

At least 17 percent of active-duty military personnel are currently taking an antidepressant, including as many as six percent of all deployed troops. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

50 percent of smokers want to quit but don't know how. So many smokers want to quit, and are ready to quit, but have no idea how. You can make up your mind you want to climb a mountain, but without the gear and the guidance, good luck.

Quitting the third most powerful drug addiction in the world requires help for more than 95 percent of smokers. Only five percent on average can quit cold turkey and stick it out more than six months. That is a fact. Even the programs offered by many hospitals do not address the secret to staying off cigarettes longer than six months. Many of those programs require four weeks of classes, which just isn't very feasible. (http://ebm.rsmjournals.com/content/227/7/445.full) Plus, medications like Chantix and Zyban are very dangerous because they not only block the brain's receptors to nicotine, but they also block dopamine, which the central nervous system needs for "fight or flight" hormones to work properly. This is why "feelings of suicide" and "suicide" are listed as "side effects" of these cessation pills. Compound all that with PTSD and what do you have?

Instead of increasing anxiety and health dangers, let's move towards better health, safety and livelihood. The Health Ranger, Mike Adams, recommends 14AndOut to military smokers who want to quit. (http://www.youtube.com)

14AndOut
is an all natural program that teaches the smoker how to wean his or herself off cigarettes in 14 days or fewer. It requires absolutely no medication and no hypnosis. Best of all, it addresses behavior modification, chemicals and nutrition in a 60 minute VIDEO DOWNLOAD which comes with a viewable/printable nutritional guide. This program is comprehensive and has a phenomenal 90 percent success rate. Testimonials are pouring in to prove it.

Attention U.S. Military; there is a sensible way to quit smoking and keep chemicals out of your body and your mind. (http://premium.naturalnews.tv/14AndOut__TV.htm)
