Fifty Shades of Grey class at American University

December 30, 2012 - 09:06 am

The racy best-selling trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey is sneaking out of the bedroom and into a D.C. classroom.

American University will offer undergraduates a class on the books this Spring. The classes will be taught in the American Studies program of the College of Arts and Sciences and will focus on the trilogy?s popularity and influence on American society, according to The Eagle.

?The trilogy has impacted the fields of public relations, writing, social media marketing, health and sexuality,? the professor of the class, Stef Woods, told The Eagle. ?It has also opened up dialogue about previously uncomfortable topics.?

Woods also runs the D.C. blog City Girl.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a work of erotic fiction that features aspects of BD/SM.

Here's the American University course description:

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is a publishing phenomenon that has dramatically impacted American culture and sexual health.

Using the series as a case study, this course examines the interplay of sexuality, health, public relations and marketing. Topics covered include feminism, addiction, social media marketing, sexual expression versus sexual repression, targeting the mom demographic, domestic violence, literary criticism, and relationship and identity forming.

The course also relies on academic texts, online resources, lectures, and guest speakers.

Live Gabfest!?Jan. 23, Washington, D.C., at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, 7 p.m. (Doors open at 6.)?Tickets and more information here.

On this week?s Slate Political Gabfest, David Plotz, John Dickerson, and Emily Bazelon wrap up 2012 by puzzling over political, moral, ethical, psychological, and familial questions that stump them in everyday life.

Here?s a list of the conundrums discussed, along with the names of the listeners who made the suggestions (some edited for length):

  • ?Near the beginning, David references a conundrum that was posed to President Obama during a Reddit AMA: ?Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized duck???Several Gabfest listeners suggested this dilemma, including Joshua Leach, Darren Barefoot and Varun Saluja.
  • Which would be worse morally?murdering a man in cold blood, or casting the decisive vote against a health care reform law that nonpartisan analysis convincingly shows would save 25,000 lives a year?? Please describe the philosophical assumptions behind your answer.?Paul Thacker
  • Address the question of a socially acceptable alternative to "What do you do?" when you're meeting someone for the first time.?Josh Littenberg-Tobias.
  • Would you rather be overdressed or underdressed? (as in, dressed too formally or too informally)?Andrea Carson Tanner
  • Which of your political/moral stances will you be embarrassed to admit to your grandchildren??@Willhoughteling, who noted a similar question on Quora.
  • As a person who has moved around a lot (and a person who currently lives in D.C., where lots of people aren't ?from here?), how long do you have to live in a place to claim you're ?from there???Nate Puckett
  • My conundrum: Do I dumb down the course so I keep up enrollment and have a job, or do I stick to my guns and teach the course I love ... and hope I still get minimum enrollment, but possibly not and then lose my job. ?Leeann Simmons
  • If there is one thing (and one thing only) that you can irreversibly change in the way your government is set up, what would it be??Jeroen ten Berg
  • Is it better to have serve others unhappily or to focus on your own happiness (real happiness, not the superficial kind) with the faith that doing so will make you a better person in the world? ?Dylan Smith
  • If you were born in a different country, what is one American thing that you wish you could have with you??Xiaojing Sun
  • How do you make sure you challenge your fundamental assumptions from time to time?? Puneet Verma

For this week's cocktail chatter, David, Emily, and John shared their favorite political moments from 2012:

Wall St week ahead: Cliff may be a fear, but debt ceiling much scarier

NEW YORK, Dec 30 ? Investors fearing a stock market plunge ? if the United States tumbles off the ?fiscal cliff? next week ? may want to relax.

But they should be scared if a few weeks later, Washington fails to reach a deal to increase the nation?s debt ceiling because that raises the threat of a default, another credit downgrade and a panic in the financial markets.

Market strategists say that while falling off the cliff for any lengthy period ? which would lead to automatic tax hikes and stiff cuts in government spending ? would badly hurt both consumer and business confidence, it would take some time for the US economy to slide into recession. In the meantime, there would be plenty of chances for lawmakers to make amends by reversing some of the effects.

That has been reflected in a US stock market that has still not shown signs of melting down. Instead, it has drifted lower and become more volatile.

In some ways, that has let Washington off the hook. In the past, a plunge in stock prices forced the hand of Congress, such as in the middle of the financial crisis in 2008.

?If this thing continues for a bit longer and the result is you get a US debt downgrade ... the risk is not that you lose two-and-a-half per cent, the risk is that you lose ten and a half,? said Jonathan Golub, chief US equity strategist at UBS Equity Research, in New York.

US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said this week that the United States will technically reach its debt limit at the end of the year.

Investors wary of January

The White House has said it will not negotiate the debt ceiling as in 2011, when the fight over what was once a procedural matter preceded the first-ever downgrade of the US credit rating. But it may be forced into such a battle again. A repeat of that war is most worrisome for markets.

Markets posted several days of sharp losses in the period surrounding the debt ceiling fight in 2011. Even after a bill to increase the ceiling passed, stocks plunged in what was seen as a vote of ?no confidence? in Washington?s ability to function, considering how close lawmakers came to a default.

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor?s lowered the US sovereign rating to double-A-plus, citing Washington?s legislative problems as one reason for the downgrade from triple-A status. The benchmark S&P 500 dropped 16 per cent in a four-week period ending August 21, 2011.

?I think there will be a tremendous fight between Democrats and Republicans about the debt ceiling,? said Jon Najarian, a co-founder of online brokerage TradeMonster.com, in Chicago.

?I think that is the biggest risk to the downside in January for the market and the US economy.?

There are some signs in the options market that investors are starting to eye the January period with more wariness. The CBOE Volatility Index, or the VIX, the market?s preferred indicator of anxiety, has remained at relatively low levels throughout this process, though on Thursday it edged above 20 for the first time since July.

More notable is the action in VIX futures markets, which shows a sharper increase in expected volatility in January than in later-dated contracts. January VIX futures are up nearly 23 per cent in the last seven trading days, compared with a 13 per cent increase in March futures and an 8 per cent increase in May futures. That?s a sign of increasing near-term worry among market participants.

The CBOE Volatility Index closed on Friday at 22.72, gaining nearly 17 per cent to end at its highest level since June as details emerged of a meeting on Friday afternoon of President Barack Obama with Senate and House leaders from both parties where the president offered proposals similar to those already rejected by Republicans. Stocks slid in late trading and equity futures continued that slide after cash markets closed.

?I was stunned Obama didn?t have another plan, and that?s absolutely why we sold off,? said Mike Shea, a managing partner and trader at Direct Access Partners LLC, in New York.

Obama offered hope for a last-minute agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff after a meeting with congressional leaders, although he scolded Congress for leaving the problem unresolved until the 11th hour.

?The hour for immediate action is here,? he told reporters at a White House briefing. ?I?m modestly optimistic that an agreement can be achieved.?

The US House of Representatives is set to convene today and continue working through the New Year?s Day holiday. Obama has proposed maintaining current tax rates for all but the highest earners.

Consumers don?t appear at all traumatized by the fiscal cliff talks, as yet. Helping to bolster consumer confidence has been a continued recovery in the housing market and growth in the labour market, albeit slow.

The latest take on employment will be out next Friday, when the US Labour Department?s non-farm payrolls report is expected to show jobs growth of 145,000 for December, in line with recent growth.

Consumers will see their paychecks affected if lawmakers cannot broker a deal and tax rates rise, but the effect on spending is likely to be gradual.

Playing defence

Options strategists have noted an increase in positions to guard against weakness in defence stocks such as General Dynamics because those stocks would be affected by spending cuts set for that sector. Notably, though, the PHLX Defence Index is less than 1 per cent away from an all-time high reached on December 20.

This underscores the view taken by most investors and strategists: One way or another, Washington will come to an agreement to offset some effects of the cliff. The result will not be entirely satisfying, but it will be enough to satisfy investors.

?Expectations are pretty low at this point, and yet the equity market hasn?t reacted,? said Carmine Grigoli, chief US investment strategist at Mizuho Securities USA, in New York. ?You?re not going to see the markets react to anything with more than a 5 (per cent) to 7 per cent correction.?

Save for a brief 3.6 per cent drop in equity futures late on Thursday evening last week after House Speaker John Boehner had to cancel a scheduled vote on a tax-hike bill due to lack of Republican support, markets have not shown the same kind of volatility as in 2008 or 2011.

A gradual decline remains possible, Golub said, if business and consumer confidence continues to take a hit on the back of fiscal cliff worries. The Conference Board?s measure of consumer confidence fell sharply in December, a drop blamed in part on the fiscal issues.

?If Congress came out and said that everything is off the table, yeah, that would be a short-term shock to the market, but that?s not likely,? said Richard Weiss, a Mountain View, California-based senior money manager at American Century Investments.

?Things will be resolved, just maybe not on a good time table. All else being equal, we see any further decline as a buying opportunity.? ? Reuters?

NFL Sunday night spotlight: Cowboys at Redskins

The winner earns a playoff berth as the NFC East champions. Dallas is out if it loses while Washington can lose and make the postseason if the Bears and Vikings lose.

Time: 5:15 p.m. TV: Channel 4

Story line: Washington carries a six-game winning streak into a game that will decide the NFC East championship. Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III shredded Dallas on Thanksgiving Day for 304 yards and threetouchdowns. Fellow rookie Alfred Morris is the NFL's fourth-leading rusher. The Cowboys' Tony Romo has thrown for more than 1,300 yards and for 10 touchdowns in his last four games, targeting Dez Bryant often.

Cowboys said: "Experience can be a really positive thing. It doesn't always have to be a good experience. Sometimes it can be a bad experience. When you didn't get the job done, hopefully you can learn from what happened." ? Jason Garrett, coach, on last year's Week 17 title-game loss

Redskins said: "You have to get up for this game more than any other game. We've had to get up for all of them, but I think this one has a little special place." ? Trent Williams, left tackle

Bottom line: Washington is favored by 3 1/2 points, and the over/under is 48 points. ? Dallas is seeking its first division title and playoff berth since 2009. The Redskins' 14 turnovers are the fewest in the NFL. ? Romo's 4,685 passing yards are a team record.

Clippers' Winning Streak Reaches 16: Los Angeles Beats Utah Jazz, 116-114

SALT LAKE CITY ? The Los Angeles Clippers already have a December to remember.

Sunday they can close it out in perfect fashion against a familiar foe ? the same Utah team they rallied to beat 116-114 Friday night to earn their 16th straight win.

If they extend their streak by beating the Jazz at home Sunday, they will join the 1995-96 Spurs and 1971-72 Lakers as the only teams in NBA history to complete a 16-0 month.

If they fight the way they did Friday, it should be easy.

"Give Utah credit, but our guys battled back tonight," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "They found a way to win and that's what it's all about. We stayed together, we weathered the storm when we had to and gave ourselves a chance and we were fortunate to make enough plays."

Afterward, team leader Chris Paul could hardly be heard over the pulsating music of Jay-Z as his teammates sang along in the visitors' locker room.

Why not?

The Clippers had just pulled off a 19-point comeback in what had been a dreadful venue for them.

Paul did most of the damage, leading the Clippers (24-6) with 29 points, including the final seven, as Los Angeles pulled out the two-point victory.

The Clippers winning streak is the longest in the NBA since Boston won 19 in row from Nov. 15 to Dec. 23, 2008.

The last time the franchise won three straight in Salt Lake City was 1979-1981 when they were the San Diego Clippers.

"This one is a great win for us because we kind of needed a challenge," said Blake Griffin, who had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers. "(We had) to prove not only to everybody else but to ourselves that we can still win close games like this and win a game down 19 in the third quarter."

In the opposing locker room, the Jazz were lamenting another one that got away ? the second loss at home to the Clippers during their record streak. They dropped the first by one on Dec. 3 after leading by 14.

On Friday, ex-Clipper Randy Foye put up a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was contested by Matt Barnes, but no foul was called. Foye finished with a season-high 28 points for Utah.

Foye did his best not to say anything about the officiating.

"I felt as though I pump-faked," Foye said. "He knew that I wanted to shoot the 3 and I felt the contact. He made me go straight up and shoot the ball straight down. It was just a tough play."

Paul was tough down the stretch, with the clinching free throws after getting fouled by Al Jefferson with 3.4 seconds left.

"When (DeAndre Jordan) came to give me the ball screen, I wasn't worried about (Gordon) Hayward, I was just worried about Al Jefferson," Paul said. "I could tell (Jefferson) was going to try and blitz me. Anytime two guys try and trap me, I'm always going to attack the slower guy. If they wouldn't have called the foul, I was right around Al anyway."

He sank both free throws this time, after missing one with 18 seconds left that allowed Jefferson to grab the rebound, draw the foul and sink two free throws at the other end to tie it at 114.

Paul made sure he got both the next time.

"Man, I couldn't wait to get to the line. I couldn't wait to get to the line," Paul said. "I was mad at myself for missing that last one. I couldn't wait to get to the line to redeem myself."

Just like the first game this season against the Jazz, Utah had the upper hand early.

The Jazz used a 36-point second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 58-48 halftime lead.

Their reserves did most of the damage. Alec Burks and Earl Watson pushed the pace, big men Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors showed their presence inside and Hayward found ways to score.

Kanter's block of Ronny Turiaf ignited the crowd.

Hayward's 3-pointer tied it at 34 with 7:04 left in the second and he scored 10 straight for the Jazz, who forced eight turnovers in the quarter and held the Clippers to 37.5 percent shooting.

Foye, who kept Utah close in the first with a 13-point quarter on 4-of-5 shooting, gave the Jazz their biggest lead of the half, 54-41, with two more free throws.

The Jazz led 74-55 with 8:08 left in the third on a pair of free throws by Paul Millsap. But the Clippers outscored Utah 29-14 the rest of the quarter to go ahead 88-84 going into the fourth.

Paul provided the offense in the third with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

"At the beginning of the third quarter, they made another run at us but then we got a little bit of a rhythm and then started guarding. We started getting some stops and getting out in the open court," Del Negro said.

The loss dropped Utah below .500 at 15-16. The Jazz have now lost six of their last eight.

Al Jefferson added 22 points for Utah. Hayward had 17 off the bench for Utah.

DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who had six players in double figures.

"It's all tough," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "On our home court. We had a lead, we gave up the lead but we continued to fight. We made some mistakes but fought our way through it and had a chance to win the ball game at the end. Unfortunately they got a lot of free throws."

NOTES: An unidentified Jazz employee was disciplined and had his access to the team Twitter account discontinued after what team officials deemed an inappropriate tweet regarding the firing of Nets coach Avery Johnson and Brooklyn's interest in Phil Jackson. The tweet said Jackson only wants "great players," an apparent reference to ex-Jazz point guard Deron Williams, who had criticized Johnson's offense. ... Jazz point guard Mo Williams still has swelling in his sprained right thumb and remains out indefinitely. ... The Clippers got a scare late in the first quarter when Lamar Odom came up limping. He returned in the second and finished with 12 points. ... The Clippers failed to register a blocked shot despite coming into the game averaging 6.52.

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

The greater your knowledge, the more you increase your financial opportunities in multi-level marketing. Apply all of the following advice to your own strategy to maximize your success.

If you start your business in MLM with a comprehensive business plan, you will get better results. Your plan should include your goals and the steps you need to take to achieve them. Before you write down your plan, you will need to know what kind of marketing campaign you will design, the number of customers you?ll need to have, and your monthly sales goals.

Before you put any money into a marketing business make sure to research them with the BBB. Most companies are real and legit; however, there are many fake ones. Verify that your investment is going to be a sound one. If you want to make sure any potential network is credible, then check their Better Business Burea rating first.

TIP! Create a vision board to help you focus on your goals in your network marketing strategy. Consider all of the things that you want to accomplish with your business.

Perhaps the best network marketing goal is to make sure that you always have goals to strive towards. Regardless of the specific multilevel marketing strategies that you use, you should always have goals that you can meet. This will constantly motivate you to continue working hard.

A huge benefit of MLM is the ability to create business associates who will expand your network. Creating an effective team who will market your products, while you expand your business in other ways, can be an invaluable asset.

Set goals and expectations before beginning a multilevel marketing business. Are you treating MLM as simply a hobby? Clearly identified goals, when in conjunction with effort, will most likely result in success.

TIP! Become the leader of your network marketing campaigns. Use your imagination to dream up interesting offers your company could make.

Try using video marketing to get more traffic to your sites. You can make a series of videos at no expense, and post them on social networks.

Setting your mind on success is essential when getting into multilevel marketing. You must make the same type of commitment to your business as you would if you were operating a store in your neighborhood. Unless you regard your business with seriousness, it will never succeed.

If you find network marketing tedious, you can hire an outside firm to do it for you. You might not have the resources or manpower at your disposal for this kind of advertising. This will also free up your valuable time, so that you can concentrate on other business matters.

TIP! When you are first dealing with a potential client, the first thing they may hear is the message on your answering machine. Maximize the potential of this.

All of the people that are in your down line should be communicating and participating with others. Do they suffer from shyness? Maybe they are having problems? Make sure your network feels free to contact you directly for advice and perspective. It is also important that they maintain good communication within the group as a whole to keep enthusiasm high. Tight-knit teams are the most successful ones, and a successful team is exactly what you want to build.

Use your website, or even social marketing outlets, to launch your multi-level marketing campaigns. A dynamic, well-written blog can also fill the bill. Maintaining a social networking presence, as well as your own website, would be very strategic options. Your network can only grow if you have a presence on the web, so work on building your image. A frequently updated, attractive and interesting blog will also help.

If you try to take shortcuts with MLM, you could wind up making a mistake that will really cost you. You will only succeed if you are committed to applying yourself with 100 percent effort. When you have chosen to create a quality work product, you will likely see great results.

TIP! As a network marketer, your goal should be to develop the leadership characteristics of the most successful independent distributors. You will then start thinking and acting like these people do and this will help you be more successful.

One of the most effective tools that all network marketers can take advantage of is neural-linguistic programming. On the other hand, ?you? statements are best used when attempting to sell an idea to someone. ?

You need to regularly meet with your team. Everyone on your team should be sticking together so they can come up with a good game plan, which helps the team work towards the same goals. Meetings are beneficial for each individual and for the team as a whole.

With all of the knowledge you just learned, your success rate should improve. Your goal, ultimately, is make as high a profit as you can. Use what you have just been taught to become more successful with your multilevel marketing.

TIP! Successful network marketing requires that you have a workable email list that you use on a regular basis. Regardless of how you acquire the lists, the crucial thing is to always have a large pool of addresses on hand to facilitate additional growth.

My favorite of all sports

Growing up, I played a lot of sports. More sports than one would imagine looking at me now, and more sports than you?d imagine looking at me then, when I tottered about with two left feet and the stature of a toddler. This does not mean I was any good at sports. I am not an athlete, never have been, never will be. Despite this, I have to say that participating in?sports from the age of 4 when I had my first ice skating lesson to the age of 17, when I had my last horseback riding show, were some of the best times of my life. Granted at the time it was embarrassing (I sucked at everything besides figure skating) but I had a BLAST! I never took myself too seriously and I remember those days as some of my greatest.

Figure skating?I figured skated for roughly 10 years. It was the only sport where I had talent and to this day, I can skate circles around 90% of the population. I could jump, spin, doing fancy footwork, and I skated competitively in singles and synchronized teams. I made it to roughly the intermediate level. My best friend at the time also skated and we constantly had contests to see who was better at the sport. I can no longer do many tricks, but I still skate today. I gave up skating because I grew 5 inches in 1 year and no longer had the body or natural ability of a figure skater. I still love it more than almost anything on this planet though. To me, being on skates is like flying. When I?m on skates, I?m free.
Baseball?I played coach pitch baseball for two years. I was one of two girls on the team both years. The other girl was much better than me. I was a puny, I couldn?t hit a ball 99% of the time (seriously, I almost ALWAYS struck out) and I was relegated to playing left field, which is where they put the people who sucked (8-9 year olds can?t hit a ball that far).
Softball?I played softball in 6th grad and then I did intramural softball in college. For some reason I was better at softball than baseball. Maybe it?s because it was all girls. I pitched and played second base. I still struck out a lot, probably 70% of the time. I gave up softball because I hated practicing.
Basketball?I was THE WORST at basketball. I only played for 1 year because I was SO BAD. Once I got shoved and bitten by a girl who later ended up playing at some big school in the NCAA. Basketball was my childhood humiliation. I couldn?t run, jump, shoot baskets, or do anything. When I played basketball, I never scored one point.
Volleyball?Volleyball was similarly humiliating as basketball, although I was somewhat better at it. I went to volleyball camp to lose weight and I did. This didn?t make me any better at volleyball and I was NOT surprised when I did not make the team. I can?t serve, hit, or do much of anything with volleyball.
Horseback riding?I horseback rode for roughly 5 years. Similar to ice skating, I was decent at it, although I was terrified of horses for the duration of my ?equestrian career.? Despite this, I love horses and rode in a few shows and took lessons weekly in elementary and high school. To me, cantering is the greatest thing on earth besides being on skates. You feel powerful on a horse, even though it?s false power, because it?s the animal that?s strong and not you. I still remember all of the horses I ever rode and which ones I loved and which ones I hated. There was an obese horse named Cass who was surprisingly fast for a chunker and I LOVED HIM. There was a horse named Chief who was a total ass and hated me. He once threw me three times in one lesson. He also peed on my $150 riding boots a couple of times. Chief was an asshole.

So there you go?my sports history. I am not an athlete, nor do I watch sports, nor do I actively involve myself in any sports besides recreational ice skating (and pilates? Is that considered athletics?) but I still love them. I will never be Venus or Serena or Michelle, but my childhood revolved around team and single sports and I wouldn?t have had it any other way.

Snowstorm buries parts of U.S. Northeast, flights canceled

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A powerful winter storm that has dumped a foot of snow on parts of the United States forced the cancellation of 457 flights on Thursday and threatened more havoc as it hit the New England states with fierce winds.

The heaviest snow was falling on Pennsylvania, New York and New England, and winter storm warnings continued over a majority of the U.S. Northeast, the National Weather Service said.

The massive storm system touched off tornadoes in the South and produced snow in Texas before barreling down on the densely populated Northeast.

The service forecast 12 to 18 inches of snow for northern New England after the storm moved northeast out of the lower Great Lakes, where it left more than a foot of snow on parts of Michigan.

The storm front was accompanied by freezing rain and sleet, creating hazards on the highways and at airports.

A Southwest Airlines jet skidded off the runway at Long Island MacArthur Airport, about 50 miles east of New York City, as it taxied for takeoff, Suffolk County police said.

None of the 134 people aboard Tampa-bound flight No. 4695 was injured, police said.

"It's been undetermined at this time if weather was a factor," a police spokeswoman said.

Snow was due to fall in northern New York, Vermont and New Hampshire at up to 2 inches an hour, with winds gusting to 30 miles per hour (48 km per hour), the weather agency said.

So far, 457 U.S. airline flights scheduled for Thursday had been canceled, according to FlightAware.com, a website that tracks flights.

American Airlines had the most canceled at 55. A total of about 1,500 U.S. flights were canceled on Wednesday.

New York state activated its Emergency Operations Center late on Wednesday to deal with the first major storm of the season.

Governor Andrew Cuomo warned the heads of seven utilities they would be held accountable for their performances. Utilities near New York City were criticized for lingering outages after Superstorm Sandy devastated the region in October.

New York state has seen little snow during autumn and winter. Buffalo, New York, was 23 inches below normal for the season before the storm, said Bill Hibbert, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

"We're short and even this big snow isn't going to make it up for us," he said.

The storm dumped record snow in north Texas and Arkansas before it swept through the U.S. South on Christmas Day and then veered north.

The system spawned tornadoes and left almost 200,000 people in Arkansas and Alabama without power on Wednesday.

At least five people were killed in road accidents related to the bad weather, police said.

Reduce Your Writing Time With Speech Recognition Software

I am always considering means of cutting down my writing time over all. One way to reduce writing time is using speech recognition software. I had heard of software programs such as dragon naturally speaking but never really invested enough time or thought into using them. Because we only have 24 hours available but between answering messages, writing blog articles, article marketing and writing articles it had been required to find methods for getting more time in the afternoon.

Integral Voice Acceptance

I first started using the integral speech recognition capabilities of Windows on my Toshiba. First, I am a person and honestly I did not expect much. I installed my microphone/web camera into the notebook and mentioned the speech recognition from the start-up menu. The original set-up takes you via a number of questions and also offers you repeat lines therefore the the application may "learn" you speech. After four hours of playing about I was willing to stop trying. My wife suggested I personally use her Plantronics Stereo PC Headset, since my microphone was picking right up every sound in the home.

I mounted my wife's headset into the laptop and began the process again. Just what a big difference! Not merely was the integrated speech identification picking up on my enunciation, however it was writing what within a few minutes after I talked. A simple demand corrects the concern and the device learns, If the plan makes an error. It's still faster than writing a write-up out, although the built-in recognition process does make some basic mistakes every now and then. One drawback concerning the integral characteristic is that it operates only on Microsoft software. Might work around is simply to influence directly into Word Pad and execute a basic copy and paste afterward.

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Regular

I decided to spend money on dragon naturally talking 10 Standard if there were more capabilities to see, since the integrated software was my first initiation into voice recognition capabilities. I have observed many individuals talking over the last year about DNS, but had never given it an additional thought.

I skipped over the work out and mounted Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard. I dictated a web log posting I'd written previously. To my surprise there have been only 6 mistakes out of a 995 word article. That wasn't bad considering there was no voice training.

Another aspect of DNS that I prefer over the integrated features may be the easy directions. For example: To underline "lamp post," the model requires you to state "Select lamp post," then you must say,"underline lamp post". After your commands are finished by you, another command of "go to end of document" is important to create the cursor back again to the end so you may start dictating. Dragon Naturally Speaking simply requires a single command of "Underline lamp post." It underlines the word and quickly moves the cursor back again to the end of the report.

The disadvantage to Dragon Naturally Speaking Standard is that it's not appropriate for a radio headset. Again, I employed my wife's plug-in headset when dictating. Because it is not able to use instant, it may not be ideal for a Mac. There are updates to DNS available however, in the event that you choose this way and need to go wireless.

Depending upon simply how much writing you actually do, the cheaper approach is to utilize the built-in features on your pc along with a quality headset like the Plantronic 10. Although DNS is a bit more correct and may use other software packages besides Microsoft, the money you spend might be utilized on other things such as syntax and plagiarism checkers if the voice recognition is mainly used by you for writing several articles a day. The main element to any of these speech recognition capabilities, including Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard, really rests on the microphone you utilize.

(AP) ? Katie Holmes' return to Broadway will be much shorter than she would have liked.

The former Mrs. Cruise's play "Dead Accounts" will close within a week of the new year. Producers said Thursday that Theresa Rebeck's drama will close on Jan. 6 after 27 previews and 44 performances.

The show, which opened to poor reviews on Nov. 29, stars Norbert Leo Butz as Holmes' onstage brother who returns to his Midwest home with a secret. Rebeck created the first season of NBC's "Smash" and several well-received plays including "Seminar" and "Mauritius."

Holmes, who became a star in the teen soap opera "Dawson's Creek," made her Broadway debut in the 2008 production of "All My Sons." She was married to Tom Cruise from 2006 until this year.

Amazon: The five biggest stories of 2012 | Internet & Media - CNET ...

8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD

(Credit: Amazon)

Amazon spent another year invading everyone's territory and pushing the limits of its business strategy.

The e-commerce company continued to dabble in book publishing and Web site hosting and tried its hand at video-gaming development. Anything slightly related to its business -- Amazon jumped on it.

That's not surprising given Amazon's history with identifying and mimicking both services and products to strengthen its bottom line. Here are the five biggest Amazon stories of 2012:

1. Go big on hardware or go home

Amazon beefed up its hardware selection this year, releasing three new devices to add to its previous line of e-book readers and its tablet. The new devices, the Kindle Paperwhite, the Kindle Fire HD, and the updated Kindle Fire, are part of the company's strategy to make money off content. Amazon actually loses money on the sale of the devices, but that doesn't matter to the retail giant. It wants people to buy into its ecosystem of apps, books, movies, and music. The Kindle Fire HD, which comes in both 7- and 8.9-inch models with modest prices, also happens to compete with Apple's iPad for tablet dollars.

2. A push for original content

The company backed the creation of more original content this year, invading the space of various forms of media. In addition to helping authors self-publish their writing and produce movies, the company bought a book publishing company and opened up its own social gaming studio to develop and publish titles. The studio, Amazon Game Studios, launched in August with a desktop game and quickly followed suit with a mobile game.

Amazon does it because it can. If its already-loyal customers -- and there are many of them -- buy into its all-in-one digital spread, Amazon can control how and what they consume.

3. More sales tax drama

Ah, the ongoing sales tax battle. This dates back years -- and continued to be an issue for Amazon in 2012. As part of Amazon's quest for faster, cheaper shipping, the company started building fulfillment centers in additional states, forcing sellers to start collecting sales tax in several states this year, including California, Texas, and Pennsylvania. These centers store and ship the goods that independent retailers sell to consumers -- the more fulfillment centers, the faster Amazon can ship. Customers in more states, like Massachusetts and New Jersey, will start paying taxes in 2013.

The ability to ship quickly to customers is clearly important to Amazon. The company also shelled out $775 million to buy a company that runs logistics for fulfillment systems.

4. Continually shaking up traditional book selling

This goes to the core of Amazon's "Earth's Biggest Bookstore" motto from the 1990s. Amazon certainly disrupted the book selling industry when it first came on the scene. And it continued to enter skirmishes with book publishers and competing book brokers in 2012. Tensions between Amazon and Barnes & Nobles, the world's biggest brick-and-mortar bookseller, have always been high. But this year the companies used tablets to fight their battles. Amazon also found itself at odds with Apple. The iPad maker accused Amazon of being the "driving force" behind federal prosecution that ended in several publishers settling with the government. Prosecutors accused the publishers of colluding with Apple to fix the price of e-books in an alleged affront to Amazon.

In an attempt to soothe its disgruntled competitors, Amazon's publishing arm signed a deal that allowed competitors to sell Amazon's titles.

5. Battles with Netflix

Amazon bulked up its video streaming offerings throughout the year, signing deals with studios and TV service Epix in order to get enough films to compete with Netflix. On top of bundling its video streaming service with its premium shipping account, Amazon also began offering its $7.99-per-month streaming plan this year, directly challenging Netflix's $7.99 plan.

All of this has left some bad blood between the companies, with Netflix CEO Redd Hastings publicly dumping on Amazon.

Adding fuel to that fire, the year ended on a downbeat for both companies. On Christmas Eve, Netflix's video streaming service suffered a widespread, hours-long outage across the Americas. The culprit was Amazon Web Services, which Netflix uses for video streaming.

Every Wednesday, WWE Classics and Greatest Matches team up with your favorite Superstars to bring you the Five-Star Match of the Week. We ask a Superstar in the WWE locker room to select one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time, and WWE.com brings you that full-length match, uncut.

For many sports-entertainment fans, ECW is remembered for its sadistic brutality, intensely dedicated fanbase and groundbreaking programming. But in addition to defining hardcore brawling, ECW also put a spotlight on other wrestling styles including high-flying lucha libre and technical mat grappling.

Matt Striker is one Superstar who recalls those more technical ECW matchups.

?I always gravitated toward the interesting in-ring competitors. Not so much the fanfare, the pageantry, the entrance, the lights, the costumes. I love the catch-as-catch-can ?puroresu? Japanese style,? Striker explained. ?And that brings me to the match that I choose, which is Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko from 1995, two-out-of-three falls.?

The match was both Eddie and Dean?s final bout in the ECW Arena before departing for WCW, where each would become stars in the promotion?s heralded Cruiserweight division. After learning this news, the Extreme faithful inside the famed ?bingo hall? began chanting ?Bischoff sucks? and ?You sold out.? But as the match progressed, each competitor used their extreme athleticism to draw the crowd into the drama of the bout.

?During this time, I had dreams of being a professional wrestler,? Striker recalled. ?I would study these tapes and steal these moves. I tried to emulate Dean and Eddie to a tee and I was nowhere near as talented as either of those guys.? (MORE STRIKER)

After trading the first two falls during nearly 20 minutes of fast-paced action, the match was declared a draw.

?Watch that match and see the story that these two men are telling. There are no catchphrases. There are no T-shirts being sold. There?s no cool fanfare on a TitanTron behind you,? Striker said. ?It?s just two guys in a dingy wrestling hall in front of true wrestling fans doing what the sign on the arena says. They are wrestling.? (MORE DEAN)

Although the infamously tough Philly fans had chided Eddie and Dean at the beginning of the match, the entire ECW arena was chanting ?Please don?t go? as the contest came to a close. Both men thanked the fans for their support and Eddie gave Dean a hug and told him he was one of the best wrestlers he?d ever faced. Paul Heyman and other ECW wrestlers poured into the ring and hoisted Malenko and Guerrero on their shoulders as they bid Philadelphia farewell. (MORE EDDIE)

?The ovation, the appreciation, the camaraderie and the brotherhood is something that transcends all of sports, all of pop culture,? Striker explained. ?For one brief moment, you believed in what Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko were doing. And because of those men and their dedication to our craft, that moment that you believe stays with you for the rest of your life.?

A Simple Hearing Test Should Be a Part of Periodic Health Exams

Your heart and lungs are both important. Keeping up on your blood pressure and cholesterol is also something that every patient and physician should keep in mind. If you care about the major organs of the body, then you should care about your ears, too. A hearing test done periodically is important. What you hear can protect you from harm, how your ears work can affect balance, and even suggest major health issues.

If your physician does not already provide some type of hearing test, then it is important for you to talk to him or her about it. For some reason, it is a part of the body that is more neglected than others. What you, as well as your physician, need to realize is that the underlying conditions that could be impacting your ability to hear are important to discover.

Alzheimer?s disease is something that could actually be mistakenly diagnosed when someone loses some of their ability to hear. If you find that you seem to miss appointments, forget names, or feel uncomfortable in social situations, it may not be because you have the beginnings of dementia. It may be that you are struggling to hear. A hearing test before being tested for dementia would aid the accuracy of the diagnosis.

Someone struggling to hear might even spiral into depression. The person might feel lonely or discouraged. They might have no desire to go to parties or spend time with friends. This can come on slowly or suddenly depending on how quickly the loss settles in. If you notice these feelings or attitudes creeping in, you might want to have a quick hearing test done at a local testing center.

Brain tumors and other neurological disorders can affect the senses as well. These issues can be life threatening, so it is important that any condition is quickly identified. With these situations, it might be harder to get testing results because sensory ability can fluctuate. If you are having a problem but get a normal result, take the process into your own hands to some degree and set out to get the accurate help you need.

Considering all of these areas should help you to see the importance of getting a periodic hearing test. If you do see the importance, you would be wise to talk to your primary care physician about it. It might just put him or her into a new habit for patients.

Huntsville, AL hearing test results could uncover a previously unknown condition, or they may dispel fears of an illness. Find a caring staff and a convenient location near you at the following site: http://www.miracle-ear-huntsville.com.

96% Monsters, Inc. 3D

All Critics (178) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (182) | Rotten (8) | DVD (45)

It may be harder nowadays to dazzle audiences with fancy visual effects, but Monsters, Inc. 3D proves that smart, imaginative storytelling still does the trick every time.

Most of the charm of "Monsters Inc." comes from its vocal cast.

If history is any guide, you and your family - whether young or old - will probably want to see "Monsters University" over and over.

The movie itself stands up well, even from an adult, two-dimensional perspective.

Its reassuring message is more relevant than ever.

The good guys are those who realize that laughter is stronger than fear. That's a message worth taking to heart these jittery days.

There's really little reason to check out Monsters, Inc. 3D in... well, 3D, rather than going for a good old-fashioned 2D screening instead.

It does well, but not brilliantly: an amusing trifle from a studio whose best work still lay ahead of it.

Not quite a Pixar classic, but funny, witty and visually spectacular enough to be enjoyed again on the big screen.

Monsters, Inc. continues a positive 3D trend for the company, who appear to be selecting their upgraded titles wisely, choosing features that benefit from the additional depth.

Not even the opportunistic 3D-ification can squander the pure delight of the film's meticulously detailed world of ragtag creatures.

[A] sparkling cartoon ...

John Lasseter and the Pixar crew know how to turn shared human feelings and experiences into strange and delightful animated features. "Monsters, Inc." is one of their most solid efforts.

A typically engrossing Pixar effort...

Cute, kid-friendly monster movie; may scare sensitive kids.

Though "Monsters, Inc." relies more on spinning-plates plot than its Pixar peers, this romp retains the charm and heart of the animation juggernaut's forte - adding extra to ordinary hopes, in this case leaving great impressions on the kids we love.

A charming cartoon classic coming courtesy of a successful collaboration by the good folks at Disney and Pixar.

A charming cartoon classic coming courtesy of a successful collaboration by the good folks at Disney and Pixar.

A stunning release of one of Pixar's most sadly underappreciated works.

Monsters, Inc. is a celebration of unforgettable characters and a world unlike any other.

From its jazzy main titles to its gentle fadeout, Monsters, Inc. has something that money can't buy. It's likeable. [Blu-ray]

PFT: Bears' Melton expects 'dirty' game vs. Lions

lomasespn

Former Lions offensive tackle Lomas Brown, who boasted last week that he intentionally missed a block so teammate Scott Mitchell would get hurt, now says he regrets it. But Brown, who is now an ESPN commentator, didn?t quite come clean.

?That was 1994, and I was extremely frustrated with the situation that was going on. And, you know, I didn?t try to get the guy hurt, but that?s what ended up happening,? Brown said on ESPN First Take today.

Brown?s claim that ?I didn?t try to get the guy hurt? doesn?t make any sense. He explicitly stated in a radio appearance last week that he purposely missed a block because he wanted Mitchell to suffer an injury, that he told a teammate that?s what he was doing, and that he was glad when Mitchell did, in fact, leave the game with an injury. Brown then boasted about the fact that backup quarterback Dave Krieg came in and played much better than Mitchell had, as if Brown deserved credit for forcing the Lions to make the switch.

Brown?s claim also doesn?t make sense because in the next breath he expressed regret for what he did.

?Do I regret it happened? Yeah, I regret it happened. Did I regret it happened then? No, I didn?t regret it then,? Brown said, later adding that he estimates he played 18,000 plays in his football career and, ?It?s one play out of the 18,000 that I regret.?

So Brown does regret what he did, and is acknowledging that he did it, even after he said he wasn?t trying to get Mitchell hurt.

Mitchell said on Wednesday that he was stunned by Brown?s comments, noting that Brown had been a guest in his home and had always acted to his face like they were friends. Brown acknowledged being friendly with Mitchell.

?Yeah, Scott did have us over to the house and everything, and I felt that I was a good teammate to Scott,? Brown said. ?I expected Scott to react that way. That?s the way he should have reacted. I don?t blame him for reacting that way. But Scott knows a lot of things that went on, too, in Detroit. So I don?t know what I can say now. I?ve already said it, it?s out there. And like I said I expected him to react in that way. I probably, if the shoe had been on the other foot, I probably would have reacted that way too. No, not probably. I would have reacted that way ? probably a little worse than that. So I don?t blame Scott, and hopefully we?ll talk about it.?

Well, it?s good to know that Brown doesn?t blame Mitchell for Brown intentionally letting Mitchell get hurt.

Brown also said that he wishes he had expressed himself differently on his radio appearance last week and not come across like he was bragging about letting Mitchell get hurt.

?I should have been more tactful about how I said that,? Brown said. ?It came off boastful. And I shouldn?t have said it that way. I said it, I can?t take it back, but I shouldn?t have said it the way I said it.?

After those comments, First Take host Cari Champion closed the segment by telling Brown, ?Well done, big fella.? Brown?s ESPN co-workers might be willing to let him off easy, but the rest of us don?t have to. What Brown did to Mitchell was despicable, and Brown has permanently damaged his reputation.
