For people struggling with debt, bankruptcy offers many benefits

????June 29, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- For people grappling with overwhelming debt, finding a solution may be a daunting proposition. However, with the help of a skilled attorney, many people find that filing for bankruptcy is not only less scary than they anticipated, but also that it helps put them on the road to restored financial health.

What is bankruptcy?

Bankruptcy is a legal procedure that can help consumers eliminate many debts and repay certain creditors. There are different types of bankruptcy for different situations. Depending on the circumstances, most people who file for bankruptcy choose to pursue either Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy. A lawyer with experience helping people get relief from their debts can help those considering bankruptcy to weigh their options and choose the right course of action for their unique circumstances.

Reduce or eliminate debts

One of the main benefits of bankruptcy is that it provides relief from debt. In many cases, people who file for bankruptcy can have some or all of their debts discharged. Some of the most commonly discharged debts during bankruptcy include credit card balances and medical bills. When these debts are discharged as a result of filing for bankruptcy, the borrower is no longer legally responsible for repaying the debt.

While many debts can be discharged during bankruptcy, others cannot. Thus, depending on the situation, some debts may remain after bankruptcy. Examples of debts that typically cannot be discharged in bankruptcy include past-due child support and alimony payments, certain tax debts and most student loans. However, even people who have some debts remaining after bankruptcy often find that it is easier to keep up with the payments as a result of having their other debts discharged.

When debts become unmanageable, a knowledgeable bankruptcy lawyer can help borrowers assess their debts and the financial situation and help to determine whether some or all of the obligations may be eligible for discharge through bankruptcy.

Stop creditor harassment

In addition to debt relief, one of the other main benefits of bankruptcy is a legal device called an automatic stay. An automatic stay is a court order that goes into effect immediately upon filing for bankruptcy, except in certain instances with previous bankruptcy filings, and stops most creditors from seeking payment or taking other collection actions against a person who has filed for bankruptcy.

An automatic stay can provide relief from bill collectors, and may also stop foreclosure, halt eviction proceedings and wage garnishments, as well as prevent repossessions. In addition, the automatic stay will stop the continuation or commencement of lawsuits against the individual. It can also be used to temporarily stop utility companies from turning off the electricity, gas, water or telephone service if a person is behind on his or her bills.

Protect family assets

In many cases, bankruptcy can also be used to protect the borrower's home or other assets from being seized to repay creditors. This can be especially helpful for people with debt, including business and tax debts, who wish to protect their family home or other personal assets from seizure. Individuals are entitled to the protection of exempt assets. While it may sometimes happen that an individual will have to forfeit certain non-exempt assets during bankruptcy, many people are able to file for bankruptcy without sacrificing any assets at all if the exemption rules are carefully followed. An experienced and qualified bankruptcy lawyer is the best chance of choosing the proper bankruptcy solution to avoid the loss of cherished personal belongings.

An attorney can help

To learn more about the different ways that bankruptcy may be able to help you to protect your property and get out of debt, contact a qualified bankruptcy lawyer in your area. An attorney with broad experience in bankruptcy can explain the various options that are available for your specific circumstances and will help you understand the risks and benefits of each potential course of action. If you choose to pursue bankruptcy, your attorney will guide you through the process and advocate vigorously on your behalf at every step of the way.

Methane in Pennsylvania Groundwater May Originate in Fracked Gas Wells

A new study links elevated levels of methane and other gases in groundwater to nearby hydraulic fracturing wells on the Marcellus Shale, and suggests the problem lies in poorly designed well casings

Are natural gas wells in northeastern Pennsylvania contaminating the groundwater supply? Some researchers think so.

Scientists at Duke University detected elevated levels of methane, ethane and propane in groundwater samples near active fracking sites. The scientists conclude that the gasses come from the wells, not natural sources, but that the problem could be solved with better-designed casings. "We think there's a well-integrity problem in this part of the Marcellus,? says Robert Jackson, a professor at Duke and lead author on the paper describing the findings. "And well problems are relatively easily fixed. They?re especially easier to fix than if there's some fundamental problem with fracking."

Hydraulic fracturing?more commonly referred to as fracking?extracts natural gas reserves that are unreachable by conventional techniques. The process requires drilling wells thousands of meters down and then blasting them with a mix of water, sand and chemicals to induce fractures in the underlying rock. Gas seeps through these fractures and flows back up the well where it is captured.

But if the wells aren?t properly sealed, then gas can leak into the groundwater. The wells are lined with metal casings that prevent extracted gas and contaminated water from leaching into the surrounding rock. To block gas from flowing up the outside of the well shaft, engineers pour cement around the outer casing to plug any gaps. If the cement or casing isn?t properly set, then gas from deep shale deposits can find its way in to shallow groundwater. If the casing ruptures, fracking chemicals can also enter the water supply.

The researchers sampled well water from 141 homes in six counties. Many of the samples contained methane, but those wells within one kilometer of a gas well showed concentrations six times higher than average. Ethane in those nearby homes was 23 times above that of homes farther away. Ten homes also showed traces of propane.

The paper, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, builds on a previous study done in 2011. The researchers added 81 homes to their data and expanded their analysis to identify the source of the stray gases.

There are many natural sources of methane, none of which have to do with fracking. Microbes, for example, produce methane as they break down organic matter. Shallow gas pockets also can find their way through underground fissures and into water supplies. But methane has a way of telling researchers where it came from. Its molecule consists of one carbon atom attached to four hydrogen atoms. But not all carbon atoms are alike; some are slightly heavier than others. These heavier flavors, or isotopes, of methane can tell scientists where the gas has been. Microbes, for example, favor lighter carbon atoms. Deep natural gas reserves, like the Marcellus shale, tend to be heavier. Isotope analysis showed gases that look like they come from the Marcellus Formation.

The appearance of ethane and propane also rules out microbes as a source in some cases. Biological sources of methane do not produce ethane and propane. Beyond one kilometer from the gas wells the background level of ethane and propane is almost zero. But within that radius, the level jumps dramatically. ?Where we find higher methane concentrations,? Jackson explains, ?sometimes it looks like natural background, sometimes it looks like Marcellus gas. When it?s Marcellus gas, that points to a problem with well casings.? He points out that the elevated gas level is not a criticism of fracking itself, but it does suggest that there are well problems and that these need to be addressed. ?The place to start is well integrity.?

Fred Baldassare, owner and senior geochemist at ECHELON Applied Geosciences Consulting, disagrees. ?I don?t get a really strong sense of where they collected the water samples from,? he says. Without that information, he explained, it is difficult to independently assess the Duke study?s conclusions. ECHELON investigates stray gas incidents for clients such as the Marcellus Shale Coalition and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Phoenix, Las Vegas bake in scorching heat

DEATH VALLEY, Calif. (AP) ? Dan Kail was vacationing in Las Vegas when he heard that the temperature at Death Valley could approach 130 degrees this weekend. He didn't hesitate to make a trip to the desert location that is typically the hottest place on the planet.

"Coming to Death Valley in the summertime has always been on the top of my bucket list," the 67-year-old Pittsburgh man said. "When I found out it might set a record I rented a car and drove straight over. If it goes above 130 I will have something to brag about."

The forecast called for Death Valley to reach 128 degrees Saturday as part of a heat wave that has caused large parts of the western U.S. to suffer. Death Valley's record high of 134 degrees, set a century ago, stands as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

"The wind out here is like being in front of a blast furnace," Kail said.

As temperatures soared in Las Vegas Friday, 200 people were treated for heat problems at an outdoor concert, Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa said.

Thirty of them were hospitalized for heat-related injuries at Vans Warped Tour at Silverton Casino as temps reached 115.

Most of the others "were essentially provided shade and water and a place to sit down," Pappa said.

It was expected to get even hotter in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Phoenix reached 116 on Friday ? 2 degrees short of the expected high ? in part because a light layer of smoke from wildfires in neighboring New Mexico shielded the blazing sun, the National Weather Service said. Phoenix was forecast to hit nearly 120. The record in Phoenix is 122.

The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Zookeepers in Phoenix hosed down the elephants and fed tigers frozen fish snacks. Dogs were at risk of burning their paws on scorched pavement, and airlines kept close watch on the heat for fear that it could cause flights to be delayed.

The heat wasn't expected to break until Monday or Tuesday.

The scorching weather presented problems for airlines because high temperatures can make it more difficult for planes to take off. Hot air reduces lift and also can diminish engine performance. Planes taking off in the heat may need longer runways or may have to shed weight by carrying less fuel or cargo.

Smaller jets and propeller planes are more likely to be affected than bigger airliners that are better equipped for extreme temperatures.

Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho, with triple-digit heat forecast for the Boise area. Cities in Washington state that are better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s next week.

"This is the hottest time of the year, but the temperatures that we'll be looking at for Friday through Sunday, they'll be toward the top," said weather service meteorologist Mark O'Malley. "It's going to be baking hot across much of the entire West."

The heat is the result of a high-pressure system brought on by a shift in the jet stream, the high-altitude air current that dictates weather patterns. The jet stream has been more erratic in the past few years.

Health officials warned people to be extremely careful when venturing outdoors. The risks include not only dehydration and heat stroke but burns from the concrete and asphalt. Dogs can suffer burns and blisters on their paws by walking on hot pavement.

"You will see people who go out walking with their dog at noon or in the middle of the day and don't bring enough water and it gets tragic pretty quickly," said Bretta Nelson, spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society. "You just don't want to find out the hard way."

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless and elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.

Officials said personnel were added to the Border Patrol's search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the brutal desert heat.

In June 1990, when Phoenix hit 122 degrees, airlines were forced to cease flights for several hours because of a lack of data from the manufacturers on how the aircraft would operate in such extreme heat.

US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher said the airline now knows that its Boeings can fly at up to 126 degrees, and its Airbus fleet can operate at up to 127.

While the heat in Las Vegas is expected to peak Sunday, it's unlikely to sideline the first round of the four-week Bikini Invitational tournament.

"I feel sorry for those poor girls having to strut themselves in 115 degrees, but there's $100,000 up for grabs," said Hard Rock casino spokeswoman Abigail Miller. "I think the girls are willing to make the sacrifice."

Researchers track facial expressions to improve teaching software

June 27, 2013 ? Research from North Carolina State University shows that software which tracks facial expressions can accurately assess the emotions of students engaged in interactive online learning and predict the effectiveness of online tutoring sessions.

"This work is part of a larger effort to develop artificial intelligence software to teach students computer science," says Dr. Kristy Boyer, an assistant professor of computer science at NC State and co-author of a paper on the work. "The program, JavaTutor, will not only respond to what a student knows, but to each student's feelings of frustration or engagement. This is important because research shows that student emotion plays an important role in the learning process."

The researchers used the automated Computer Expression Recognition Toolbox (CERT) program to evaluate facial expressions of 65 college students engaged in one-on-one online tutoring sessions. The researchers found that CERT was able to identify facial movements associated with learning-centered emotions, such as frustration or concentration -- and that the automated program's findings were consistent with expert human assessments more than 85 percent of the time.

The researchers also had the students report how effective they felt the tutorial was, and tested the students before and after each tutoring session to measure how much they learned.

The researchers used observational data from CERT along with student self-assessments and test results to develop models that could predict how effective a tutorial session was, based on what the facial expressions of the students indicated about each student's feelings of frustration or engagement.

"This work feeds directly into the next stage of JavaTutor system development, which will enable the program to provide cognitive and emotion-based feedback to students," says Joseph Grafsgaard, a Ph.D. student at NC State and lead author of the paper.

The paper, "Automatically Recognizing Facial Expression: Predicting Engagement and Frustration," will be presented at the International Conference on Educational Data Mining, being held July 6-9 in Memphis, Tenn. The paper was co-authored by Joseph Wiggins, an undergraduate at NC State; Dr. Eric Wiebe, a professor of science, technology, engineering and math education at NC State; and Dr. James Lester, a professor of computer science at NC State. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

Vine for Android gets front camera support, upload manager

Twitter is certainly making up for lost time on Android -- just a few days after it upgraded Vine to address some early omissions, it's back with another round of improvements for the Google-inclined. The just-posted Vine 1.2 update for Android brings front camera access for those inevitable selfie videos. It also brings an upload manager for backlogged clips, settings tweaks and a fresh wave of performance boosts. The new version may not lure back Android users who've switched allegiance to Instagram, but those who still prefer Twitter's approach can grab Vine 1.2 at Google Play.

Testimony in Jackson case focuses on paparazzi

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Scrutiny by paparazzi has made it more difficult for the children of Michael Jackson to grieve for their dead father, a family cousin who serves as co-guardian of the singer's children told a jury on Thursday.

TJ Jackson said the three children don't like the attention, and he supports any legislative effort to curb photographers from pursuing images of the sons and daughters of celebrities.

"In my opinion, I know it's making everything harder for the kids to grieve and recover and progress," Jackson said.

The comments came as Jackson testified during a civil trial involving the death of the pop star about his relationship with his famous uncle and the singer's parenting of his children.

He cited remarks made Tuesday by Halle Berry in Sacramento as the Legislature considers a bill that would change the definition of harassment to include photographing or recording a child without the permission of a legal guardian.

Anyone convicted of a first offense could spend between 10 days and a year in jail.

TJ Jackson said he had to consider whether Michael Jackson's youngest son Blanket should attend martial arts classes on Tuesday because photographers would be interested in getting a shot of the 11-year-old on the fourth anniversary of his father's death.

TJ Jackson is Tito Jackson's son and a member of the musical group 3T with two of his brothers.

Macy's fined over treatment of immigrant workers

Retail

Pedestrians pass Macy's department store Friday Jan. 14, 2005 in New York.

FRANK FRANKLIN II / AP

Pedestrians pass Macy's department store Friday Jan. 14, 2005 in New York.

Macy's Inc has agreed to pay a $175,000 civil fine and improve its practices to resolve a U.S. government probe that found the retailer had discriminated against immigrant employees when verifying their eligibility to continue to work.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday said Macy's had engaged in "unfair documentary practices" against some immigrant employees who had previously been authorized to work.

It said this resulted in some affected workers being suspended, terminated, or losing seniority. Macy's agreed to set up a $100,000 fund to compensate these workers.

The settlement covers Macy's Retail Holdings Inc, as well as divisions that contain department store locations in western and southwestern U.S. states, Florida and Puerto Rico.

It also requires Macy's to improve training and employment reverification policies, including the use of the government's "E-Verify" platform that lets employers check workers' legal status, and subjects the retailer to two years of monitoring by the Justice Department.

"Employers must ensure that they follow correct procedures during the reverification of employment authorization of non-U.S. citizens," Gregory Friel, deputy assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's civil rights division, said in a statement.

The department said its probe began in April 2012, based on several calls to a worker hotline regarding Macy's practices. It did not immediately provide details about the specific violations.

Macy's spokesman Jim Sluzewski declined to comment.

According to the settlement agreement, Macy's denied committing immigration-related discrimination or engaging in unfair documentary practices in violation of the federal Immigration and Nationality Act.

That law bars employers from demanding more or different documents, or changing documentation rules, based on people's immigration status or national origin.

Macy's had about 175,700 full- and part-time employees as of Feb. 2, according to its annual report, and operated roughly 840 stores under the Macy's and Bloomingdale's names. The company has offices in Cincinnati and New York.

Egypt's Mursi circles wagons as trouble looms

CAIRO (Reuters) - President Mohamed Mursi came to office promising to be a president for all Egyptians. A year into his term, the divisions deepened by his rule have pitched the nation into crisis.

As Mursi's opponents mobilize for protests aimed at toppling him, the Muslim Brotherhood man shows no sign of flinching. Instead, he is digging in, backed by Islamist allies determined to shield Mursi from what they see as an attempted coup.

That he should battle on regardless, fending off a storm of criticism which he says is personally hurtful, reflects Mursi's approach during a year in which his efforts have been obstructed by political unrest, resistance from vested interests within the state and failures by a government that seems to lack vision.

As hopes for consensus have faded, Mursi has ploughed on regardless, casting his opponents as spoilers who have rejected his attempts at outreach. His allies, meanwhile, have been whittled down to Islamists at the extreme religious right.

Addressing his supporters on Wednesday, Mursi said the conflict threatened "our nascent democratic experience and threatens to put the whole nation in a state of paralysis and chaos". In a pattern seen before, he offered concessions, but these were dismissed as too little by the opposition.

"I say to the opposition: the road to change is clear," he said, alluding to elections won by the Islamists to date.

A determined man of action to his supporters and a would-be despot to his opponents, Mursi, 61, is a civil engineer and university lecturer with a doctorate from the United States. He was raised in a rural village a two-hour drive north of Cairo.

He was thrust into the presidential race when the Brotherhood's first-choice candidate was disqualified. Dismissed at first as the "spare tyre", he has grown into his role, appearing ever more confident in his public addresses.

Leaning over the podium and digressing from his written remarks during a nearly three-hour speech late on Wednesday, Mursi sought to appeal to ordinary people with a folksy style that departed from stiffer habits that were often mocked.

"He knows his primary audience is not opposition supporters or secular-minded urbanites," said Yasser El-Shimy, Egypt analyst with the International Crisis Group.

When he took office, the extent of his authority was thrown into doubt by the role of Hosni Mubarak-era generals who had established themselves as a rival source of authority.

Yet the novice president stunned observers in August when he sacked Mubarak's veteran defense minister, a move that drew grudging respect from some critics, even in the liberal camp.

FAILING TO REACH OUT

In his first weeks in office, visits to China and Iran set a new tone for Egypt's foreign policy. He also preserved Egypt's role as a vital Middle East actor by helping broker an end to a short war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.

The ceasefire declared from Cairo in the presence of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reassured the West that Islamist rule did not mean a dramatic shift in a regional order underpinned by Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

But no sooner had Mursi helped settle one international conflict than he set off another at home by issuing a decree that infuriated opponents and triggered days of lethal violence.

The decree allowed the Islamists to complete a constitution free of the risk of legal challenges. Mursi then put the controversial text to referendum, ignoring protests from non-Islamists who said it did not reflect Egypt's diversity.

The opposition condemned Mursi's constitutional decree as a power grab with echoes of the Mubarak era. The Brotherhood billed it as a pre-emptive move against a plot by old regime loyalists to obstruct the political transition.

Mursi and the Brotherhood won, but not without cost. The episode deepened the political divide, burying hopes for the consensus needed to embark on reforms to tackle an economic crisis that has sent the currency to record lows.

Talks with the International Monetary Fund on a $4.8 billion loan vital to restoring investor confidence stumbled as Mursi balked at politically-sensitive terms such as tax increases.

Even the Brotherhood spoke out publicly against Mursi's prime minister, the independent technocrat Hisham Kandil.

The government's commitment to democracy was thrown into question by laws criticized for restricting civil society and the right to protest. The United States and Europe - major donors - both expressed concern.

Critics have depicted Mursi as a puppet of the Islamist movement that launched him to power - a claim rejected by the presidency and the Brotherhood. But ex-members of the presidential staff have cited the group's interference as their reason for quitting.

"Dr Mohamed Mursi unfortunately does not have transparency, clarity in dealing with the Egyptian people," said Mohamed Habib, a former deputy leader of the Brotherhood who quit the group in 2011.

As his circle of friends tightens to groups such al-Gamaa al-Islamiya, a once-armed jihadist movement, Mursi will likely find it even harder to convince critics that he can be a president for all Egyptians and not just a party man.

"The relationship with the Egyptian people was the main shortcoming this year: the transformation from being a movement to a national political force," said a Western diplomat.

"The main mistake was the inability to speak to the nation and to engage the Egyptians into this new democratic project."

NoteSuite for iPad: Meet Evernote's New, Subscription-Free Competition

NoteSuite for iPad: Meet Evernote's New, Subscription-Free Competition After finding success with note-taking/to-do app Projectbook last year, Theory.io has decided to overhaul their signature productivity app and take it a step further. Now, hoping to go head-to-head with big dogs like Evernote, the developers are officially re-releasing the app as NoteSuite?the potential answer to all your disorganized digital life woes.

What does it do?

Just like its first incarnation, NoteSuite still you take notes and make to-do lists, but that's only a very small portion of the new beast. You can also annotate essentially any type of content (web pages, articles, PDFs, etc.), clip web pages, record audio, and search through various file types as one. Your data will sync across your various devices (which would be limited to Macs and iPads at this point).

Why do we like it?

One of the biggest differences between this and Evernote is that you're not going to have to pay any sort of subscription fee, and you still get virtually all the perks. And the annotation function on the app is fantastic. Nothing is safe from your highlighting, annotating, signing, typing fingers?you can write and draw on practically any document by converting it to a PDF. The fact that search can work across files that haven't been converted or organized is another huge bonus. And if you were already a ProjectBook user, you can nab the update totally free. Of course, the fact that there's no iPhone version yet is a pretty big mark in the "con" column?but the app is young, hopefully a more mobile-friendly edition is soon to come.

NoteSuite, Download this app for: iPad, $2

The Best: No subscription fee

The Worst: No iPhone version

How to speed up your Mac by verifying and repairing disk permissions

How to speed up your Mac by verifying and repairing disk permissions

If you've owned your Mac for quite a while, you may notice a slowdown in performance over time. A while back we gave you lots of ways to breathe new life into a dying Mac Pro. These tips may also apply to some other Mac models as well but if you're just looking for quick fixes when it comes to performance without altering hardware, verifying and repairing disk permissions can sometimes help.

Here's how to do it.

  1. Launch the Disk Utility application on your Mac. You can do this by either going into Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility or by simply using Spotlight to search for it. The latter is probably quicker and more efficient.
  2. In the left hand column of Disk Utility, click on your hard drive.
  3. Now in the right hand pane, click on Verify Disk Permissions.
  4. Let Disk Utility do its thing and after a few minutes you'll see some permissions that may have had issues.
  5. Now click on Repair Disk Permissions directly underneath the verify option.
  6. Again, Disk Utility will start to repair the permissions just like it did for verify. Once it's done you can go ahead and close out of Disk Utility.

While this won't solve serious problems with a Mac, I have found it to speed up my past Macs when I was having issues with launching applications or just general overall slowness. If you're seeing performance issues, verifying and repairing permissions is definitely worth a try!

Mailbox update adds landscape view for iPhone and Gmail aliases

Mailbox, the popular third-party Gmail experience for iOS, has been updated with a couple of cool new features. Following the recent addition of portrait view for the iPad, there's now access to a landscape view on the iPhone so you can read your messages in the wider view. Also, with support for alias accounts now added, Gmail's "send as" feature opens up in Mailbox.

Aliases can be added by heading into settings, and looking for the "Gmail Aliases" menu item. Once added and verified, you should see an option to choose these accounts when composing an email. The omission of alias accounts from the outset is something that prevented me from adopting Mailbox as a daily driver, so now it's there I might have to go and take another look. Anyone else been holding out for this?

In rash of IPOs, companies raise less than hoped

NEW YORK (AP) -- The stock market's recent gyrations are taking their toll on some IPOs.

In a possible warning sign for the market for initial public stock offerings, five companies, ranging from former Home Depot arm HD Supply to Aratana, a developer of pet medicines, raised less money than they had hoped.

That's mainly because of recent volatility in the stock market, said Greg Leffert, a research analyst for IPO research firm Renaissance Capital.

Stocks plunged last week after the Federal Reserve said it might cut back on its billions of dollars in stimulus spending this year. Shares have recovered in recent days, and the stocks of four of the newly public companies rose Thursday.

Despite the lower-than-expected proceeds from the five IPOs, Leffert said demand remains strong, with more than 60 deals since the start of the second quarter. That's the most since in five years. He attributed that to increased investor optimism, market stability and pent-up demand for IPOs over the past couple years. "It's definitely good that these were able to get done and it bodes well for activity picking up in next quarter," Leffert said. On Thursday, Burlington Holdings Inc., owner of the Burlington Coat Factory store chain, said it was planning a $175 million IPO.

The recession that started in December 2007 shocked the IPO market, and deal volume has yet to return to the levels from before the financial crisis. Healthy IPO markets can reflect overall economic conditions and investor sentiment. They're often used by small, new companies to generate the cash they need to expand.

HD Supply Holdings Inc. raised $957.6 million in its IPO, marking at least the fifth-largest deal of the year. The Atlanta-based industrial distributor, formed in 2007 after a group of investors bought Home Depot Inc.'s former wholesale distribution business, had hoped to draw investors upbeat about the recent rebound in the construction industry. But HD Supply sold 53.2 million shares at $18 each. The company had hoped to fetch $22 to $25 per share. Shares added 3.7 percent to close at $18.66 Thursday.

CDW Corp., which provides information technology services for businesses, universities and government agencies, raised about $396 million. It sold 23.3 million shares for $17 each, the low end of the Vernon Hills, Ill.-based company's revised range of $17 to $18. In mid-June, CDW had said it hoped to sell 27.9 million shares for $20 to $23 apiece. The stock rose 8.1 percent to $18.37.

Demand for the company's stock was probably hurt by recent reports of IT spending cuts, Leffert said.

Both HD Supply and CDW plan to use the proceeds from their IPOs to pay down debt.

Several other companies also traded higher after pricing below expectations. Pet medicine developer Aratana Therapeutics Inc. gained 38 percent to $8.26 after raising about $35 million. The Kansas City, Kan., company priced 5.8 million shares at $6 each. It had hoped for a price of $11 to $13 in a smaller offering of 4.3 million shares. And shares of Silvercrest Asset Management Group Inc. rose 7.6 percent to $11.83 after the New York investment manager raised nearly $53 million. It sold 4.8 million shares for $11 each, below its expected range of $12 to $14.

But Tremor Video Inc. shares failed to gain traction, falling 15 percent to $8.50. The New York video ad company raised $75 million in its IPO ? 7.5 million shares for $10 each, below the expected range of $11 to $13.

Westinghouse's 84-Inch 4k Touchscreen Makes Windows 8 Feel Epic

Westinghouse's 84-Inch 4k Touchscreen Makes Windows 8 Feel Epic

Westinghouse Digital's "Digital Whiteboard" is an 84-inch UltraHD monster that runs Windows 8. It costs $15,000, so for starters, this is headed to the lecture halls and boardrooms of the world. Unless you've got dollar, you won't see this beauty in your living room just yet. Which is a shame, because using it is like touching the future.

The Digital Whiteboard's touch technology isn't capacitive like the Perceptive Pixel glory we used for years until Microsoft scooped it up. Instead, it runs a six-point infrared overlay that's baked right into the screen's bezel.

Overall the screen is fairly responsive, and Windows 8 blow-up to that epic size feels so natural that this could the platform the UI was designed for. It's remarkable how those Metro tiles scale up beautifully. But the actual look and feel of apps varies when you scale it up. Common web browsing could have a home on this TV, but firing up the Weather Channel app, made today's isolated T-storms forecast feel especially foreboding.

Of course, this screen is supposed to be more than just a plaything, so Westinghouse has built some pretty rudimentary whiteboard software so that you can, you know, write on the screen like a whiteboard. I was able to easily scrawl out "hello world" using my finger. The UI for the app isn't beautiful or anything, but it'll suffice. If massive touchscreen computers catch-on, a third-party app surely will as well.

And don't be fooled: he screen isn't quite as silky as what you get on your smartphone. There's a slight but noticeable lag on the touch. For all that pixel density, we weren't overwhelmed with the screen's beauty.

Then again, it's a freaking Windows 8 PC at massive proportions, so we're willing to cut the screen some slack.

Family Photo Flip Book | Sweet Rose Studio

Ever since we moved into our new home, the husband and I have been working diligently on making all parts of our home us. Our home has really good bones: great flooring, neutral wall colors, crown molding and wainscoting in various rooms throughout our home. All stuff that is fabulous, but it could be in any person?s home. It just needed touches here and there to make sure it looks like our family is the one living there now. So far, Luke and Reagan?s rooms have been tackled, we?ve created a gallery wall with some personalized art, made over some old not-so-cute art, and put together a place perfect for displaying all of our kids? masterpieces. Now that almost every other room in our home has had some new love infused into it, it?s time to focus on my favorite space in our home: my craft room. I?m sharing the first project I put together for the craft space: a Family Photo Flip Book!

Family Photo Flip Book

I?ve added a piece of art that is really me but it showcases the the thing I love most: my family. Want to take a peek at each of the pages?

Let me start by saying this: I?m not going to tell you step-by-step how to re-create this sweet piece of home decor, BUT I am showing you each page and trying to list as many of the supplies that I used so you have a great jumping off point for when you create your own. Sound good?

The base of the entire flip book is this amazing mini clipboard album. Swoon. I simply built everything off of the pages that were already included with it. Because the clipboard opens, you could easily add more pages if that?s your style.
