Pharrell Williams sues will.i.am over 'i am'

By Erin Geiger Smith

(Reuters) - Music producer Pharrell Williams filed a lawsuit Monday asking a U.S. court to rule he has not violated any trademark that Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am owns for the phrase "I AM."

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, said that will.i.am, whose real name is William Adams, has repeatedly sent letters to Williams demanding he stop using versions of the phrase "I AM" on a website founded by Williams, iamother.com.

The website, according to the lawsuit, focuses on "encouraging individuality through different forms of expression."

Trademarks owned by Williams's company, I Am Other Entertainment, do not have periods between the "i" and the "am," while those owned by will.i.am do, the lawsuit said.

Further, the lawsuit claimed, will.i.am's trademark for "I AM" covers clothing and is "relatively weak" because similar trademarks already exist.

An attorney for will.i.am was not immediately available for comment.

The lawsuit asked the court to declare that the phrase "I Am Other" does not "infringe, dilute or unfairly compete" with will.i.am, said Brad Rose, counsel for Williams.

Williams is part of the musical duo The Neptunes and has collaborated with artists including Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Jay-Z.

The Black Eyed Peas have sold more than 31 million albums, according to will.i.am's website.

The case is I Am Other Entertainment, LLC v. William Adams, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 13-4547.

(The story was corrected to change spelling of Black Eyed Peas in the first paragraph)

The Real Danger of Flying Debris in a Hurricane

U.S. Navy photo by Jim Brooks

Window and door manufacturers are churning out costly impact-resistant products intended to protect you during severe storms. But do you know what these super-windows really protect you from? In a recent post, I wrote that impact windows primarily protect homes from flying debris in a storm. That?s only part of the story, however.

If the only danger to worry about was the small chance that a stray 2 x 4 would come hurtling through the window like a timber missile, many of us would just play the odds and pass on the expensive windows. But a broken window during an angry storm increases the risk to your home's entire structure.

In a high-wind event, even small flying debris can compromise a window or door. That creates an opening in what was previously a sealed "building envelope." If that opening is on the windward side of your home, it acts like the opening of a balloon, with massive volumes of air being forced in. And, just like a balloon, this increases the air pressure inside the envelope. If that pressure gets high enough, something?s gotta give. Pop!

The first place that will give out depends on your construction. Unfortunately it?s often the roof?and not the shingles, but the deck. The pressure in the attic literally blows the roof deck off from the inside, and once there is a hole, the wind outside continues to wreak havoc. If that wasn?t bad enough, usually these storms come with rain. And now your roof is gone. I?m sure you see the problem.

Building codes have been paying increasing attention to these issues, so chances are that your home already has a number of preventative measures to avoid a worst-case scenario. But you should know that keeping your window and door openings secure in a hurricane is about more than protecting yourself from a rare 2 x 4 missile.

Apple Q3 2013 earnings call to take place July 23, 5PM ET

Apple's next earnings call will be held on Tuesday July 23, at 5PM ET/2PM PT following the Q3 2013 earnings release that day. Typically on these types of calls, we'll be treated to a series of prepared statements by CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer, and it's always good to hear Tim Cook speak. Oh, and there'll likely be the standard question and answer session at the end.

The good news is that the call will be streamed live on the web, and anyone with an iOS device on 4.2 and up, a Mac on OS X 10.5 and above or a PC running QuickTime 7 can listen along as it happens. iMore will of course be bringing you full coverage as it all goes down. Any predictions?

TSA Is Instagramming the Crazy Stuff It Confiscates at Checkpoints

TSA Is Instagramming the Crazy Stuff It Confiscates at Checkpoints

What is Instagram for if not bragging oh so subtly about the stuff you're doing. It's true for rich kids on fancy vacations, and apparently, it's true for the Transportation Safety Administration, which has been posting images of the absurd stuff passengers are trying to carry on planes every day.

Since June 27th, the TSA has posted 10 gauzy, filter-soaked shots of handguns, concealed knives, fireworks, and even an (inert) hand grenade?all of which were confiscated from passengers trying to board flights. It's proof in sepia and tan that the TSA is doing its job by keeping the skies safe.

TSA Is Instagramming the Crazy Stuff It Confiscates at Checkpoints

As Forbes points out, TSA is no stranger to using the Internet to get the message out about it successes. The agency has been blogging weekly updates about its dominion over the checkpoint line since 2008. Let's just hope all that social media communication isn't distracting agents from the all important task of taking dangerous implements away from air travelers in the first place. Microsoft to sell 256GB Surface Pro in the US, but only through certain resellers (updated)

Microsoft to sell 256GB Surface Pro in US, but supplies are limited

Did you look on Japan with envy as Microsoft launched a 256GB Surface Pro in the country, leaving other countries with modest storage? If you're American, you won't have to fret any more: Microsoft has confirmed to Engadget that there will be "limited availability" of the 256GB model in the country through its new commercial reseller program. While the company didn't say exactly which stores will carry the Surface Pro, Windows Phone Central has already spotted the new version on sale at CDW for $1,200. New orders will still take a few days to ship, but it could be worth the wait for the ultimate version of Microsoft's official tablet.

Update: Microsoft has clarified its earlier statement in an FAQ -- at least at present, you'll have to be in business, education or the public sector to get the 256GB Surface Pro.
