San Diego man extradited to Mexico in child's death

A 36-year-old San Diego man was extradited Thursday to Mexico, where he is accused of sexual abuse and murder in the death of his girlfriend?s 2-year-old daughter.

Joshua Moses Morales was arrested in Corcoran, in central California, in February 2010 by the U.S. Marshals Service, said U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner in Fresno. He was certified for extradition during a federal court hearing in Fresno in April. Morales challenged that finding, but his objection was denied this month.

The extradition request states that Morales is charged with aggravated homicide after allegedly sexually abusing the toddler the night of Feb. 6, 2009, after his girlfriend, Veronica Osorio, left her Tijuana apartment for work at a restaurant.

According to U.S. federal court records, Osorio went to work about 6 p.m. About two hours later, Morales took the child to a neighbor?s apartment and asked for help, saying the girl was dying. The neighbor, Nancy Tabora, told Mexican authorities that she found the child on the floor and not breathing, with her eyes closed, when she went to help.

Morales and his mother took the girl to a hospital, where emergency-room doctors said she was dead. Doctors said that the girl had multiple bruises and signs of sexual abuse. An autopsy determined she died from trauma to the head and deep contusions to the abdomen.

Morales, who is a U.S. citizen, fled to the United States. At the time of the girl?s death, Osorio also had an infant son with Morales, court records said.

U.N. complains to Iraq over attack on dissident camp (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? The United Nations has complained to Iraq about mortar attacks this week on an Iranian dissident camp near Baghdad and has won a promise that they will be stopped, a U.N. spokesman said on Thursday.

Two mortars hit Camp Ashraf on Sunday, just days after Baghdad extended a year-end deadline for the facility to be closed as the United Nations negotiated resettlement of 3,000 residents there.

Camp Ashraf, 40 miles from Baghdad, has been home for 25 years to the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran, or PMOI, an Iranian opposition group the United States and Iran officially consider a terrorist organization.

The U.N. special envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, "raised the reported mortar attacks ... with the Iraqi competent authorities, who confirmed that these attacks did indeed take place," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

The Iraqis "promised to ensure that these attacks cease and to hold the perpetrators accountable," Nesirky said.

U.N. officials could not say whether the Iraqi authorities had given any indication of who they believed was responsible for the attacks.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said last week he had agreed to extend the deadline for closing the camp on condition the United Nations transfer about 400 to 800 residents to other countries before the end of this year.

Camp Ashraf's future became unclear after Washington turned it over to Iraq in 2009. Baghdad has repeatedly said it does not want the guerrilla group on Iraqi soil.

In the 1970s the group led a guerrilla campaign against the U.S.-backed Shah of Iran but after the 1979 Islamic revolution also turned against Iran's new clerical rulers. It was hosted in Iraq by former leader Saddam Hussein, a bitter foe of Iran.

The Paris-based leader of the PMOI, Maryam Rajavi, said on Wednesday that 400 members were ready to move from Camp Ashraf to a new location as a goodwill gesture. She said they would travel to a sprawling former U.S. military base known as Camp Liberty near the Baghdad airport "at the first opportunity."

In a statement on Thursday, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which is linked to the Mujahideen, said the 400 were ready to move as early as Friday. But U.N. officials said it was not likely to start for several days.

The NCRI said on Wednesday there had been a total of three attacks this week on Camp Ashraf using 107mm Katyusha rockets. It blamed them on the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps "and its Iraqi agents."

Junior dos Santos won't fight Frank Mir for revenge, predicts Lesnar has early advantage against Overeem

Photo of Frank Mir right after he submitted Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140 in Dec. 2011.

Revenge is best when you get it yourself.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos has been giving his thoughts on the recent submission loss of his mentor, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, at the hands of former division champion Frank Mir at UFC 140 on Dec. 10, 2011.

Nogueira, who serves as "Cigano's" Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor, has suffered two defeats at the hands of Mir -- via technical knockout at UFC 92 back in 2008 and, most recently, Mir broke "Minotauro's" arm after he refused to tap to a kimura at the aforementioned UFC 140 earlier this month.

With the submission victory, Mir became the first man to ever submit the jiu-jitsu black belt, to go along with being the first to ever stop "Big Nog" via strikes in their initial encounter.

However, don't expect the young champion to seek out a revenge fight for his friend.

Speaking to Tatame.com, Dos Santos says that should he ever get the opportunity to fight Mir, he won't do it to get revenge for Nogueira, but rather, would like to see "Minotauro" get revenge on his own.

Check it out:

Star-divide

"I just think it was a complicated fight for all Brazilians, mainly for us at Team Nogueira. He (Rodrigo) had the win in his hands and with Frank Mir knocked out in front of him, and, for some reason, he didn't keep punching him, he tried to fit a guillotine choke and Frank Mir was lucky enough to grab his arm, and grabbed the chance when he had one. The problem was that he broke Rodrigo's arm, and he has just recovered, and now he'll stay some time off. But we know it already; I know what it'll be the result of it: Rodrigo will come back and bring much joy to all of us. I don't need to revenge him. I guess there's no such thing; I guess he (Rodrigo) can do it himself. But I confess I have never picked out opponents and I won't, but if someday I fight Frank Mir, absolutely it'd be an interesting fight."

In a sense, "Cigano" has already obtained revenge for Nogueira once before. On Nov. 12, 2011, at the inaugural UFC on Fox 1 show, dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez in the first round to become the new UFC heavyweight champion. In the process, he avenged a previous loss of Nogueira to Velasquez, which he suffered at UFC 110 on Feb. 21, 2010, in "The Land Down Under."

A third fight between Mir and Nogueira is highly unlikely given the outcome of the previous two bouts. Even though dos Santos wouldn't mind a fight with Mir in the future, he has much bigger fish to fry in his first title defense.

Much, much bigger.

That's because "Cigano" will take on the winner of this weekend's (Dec. 30, 2011) colossal heavyweight clash at UFC 141 between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

A match up that he believes can go either way:

"It's a tough fight for the both of them. I'm saying it'll be 50-50, but Brock has more chances on the beginning of the fight because he's more explosive and goes for it."

Dos Santos is currently rehabbing from successful knee surgery he had to repair a torn meniscus that he damaged prior to his title fight with Velasquez.

Should a fight between "Cigano" and Mir ever come to fruition, will the Brazilian bomber have better results than those of his mentor Nogueira? Does he stand a chance against the Lesnar-Overeem winner?

Opinions, please.

Israeli airstrike on Gaza kills 1 militant (AP)

JERUSALEM ? The Israeli army says it has carried out an airstrike against a group of Palestinian militants preparing to launch rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip.

The territory's Health Ministry says one man was killed and one wounded in the strike early on Friday.

The army says the airstrike thwarted an attempt by a group that had recently fired rockets at Israel.

Earlier this week, Israel carried out airstrikes in Gaza, targeting militants it says were about to launch an attack on the Israel-Egypt border.

Such Israeli air attacks have been relatively rare since the end of a three-week Israeli war against Gaza militants three years ago.

No Palestinian militant group has said it was behind the latest rocket launching attempt.

Samsung Galaxy S Won?t Be Getting Ice Cream Sandwich OS

Samsung has just announced that the Galaxy S won?t be getting Android 4.0 OS aka Ice Cream Sandwich update. This surely an unfortunate announcement by Samsung for the Galaxy S? users. However, Samsung has their own reason for this sad news.

The main reason was due to hardware limitations that would not be able to run the new Android platform alongside Samsung?s custom TouchWiz user interface. But, we are looking closely, something is up. Since the Android 4.0 OS update is available for the Samsung Nexus S which pretty much similar to the Galaxy S. The device packed with 1GHz Hummingbird processor and enough memory for ICS.

Suicide attacker kills 7 at Baghdad checkpoint (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber set off a car bomb Monday at a checkpoint leading to the Iraqi Interior Ministry, killing seven people and injuring 32 others, officials said.

The attack followed a series of bombings last week that killed up to 70 people in a single day, increasing fears about Iraq's future after U.S. troops withdrew this month.

Two police officers said the bomber struck during morning rush hour, hitting one of many security barriers set up around the ministry's building. Five policemen were among the dead, they said.

Two doctors at nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information.

No one has claimed responsibility, but suicide attacks are the hallmark of the al-Qaida in Iraq terror group.

U.S. and some Iraqi officials have warned of a resurgence of Sunni and Shiite militants and an increase in violence after the full U.S. troop withdrawal.

Adding to Iraq's troubles is an increase in political tension stemming from a showdown between the Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and the top Sunni political leader in the country.

Al-Maliki's government has issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi on charges that he ran hit squads against government officials.

Al-Hashemi has denied the charges and said they are politically motivated.

From Dear Leader to Marilyn Monroe, defector mocks Kim (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Above the ballooning dress of Marilyn Monroe is the face of the late North Korean despot Kim Jong-il. A pigeon flies overhead and a feather lies nearby on the ground.

North Korean artist Song Byeok once proudly drew the "Dear Leader" in propaganda paintings. But he was sent to labor in one of the reclusive state's notorious prisons after hunger forced him to try to flee.

Now a defector living in the South Korean capital, Seoul, Song has turned to mocking a ruler who led his country into famine, isolation and economic ruin.

"The day I finished this, he passed away," Song said of his painting and the death of Kim on December 17.

"He's not an eternal creature but the same as the feather of a pigeon," said Song, using the feather to symbolize something inconsequential.

"I thought it would've been better if he made North Koreans better off and forget hunger before he died."

Kim, who was 69 when he died, was a patron of the arts in his hermit kingdom and at times went to extreme means to promote the arts.

He once kidnapped a film director and forced him to make movies for him. Kim amassed a big hoard of South Korean movies on DVD and commissioned works of art.

Song never had a sitting with Kim, the second member of a dynasty that has ruled North Korea since its birth in 1948.

Every morning, he was handed a sketch of whatever piece of propaganda the state wanted illustrated that day.

"How could I, just a commoner, meet Kim Jong-il? He is the sun," the 42-year-old painter and sculptor recalled.

STARVATION, ESCAPE

Song, like most other North Koreans, practically worshipped Kim and before that, his father, Kim Il-sung.

But starvation, a result of chronic mismanagement and natural disasters, changed that. After floods in the late 1990s, conditions deteriorated to the point of desperation.

In August 2000, Song and his father, driven by hunger, tried to swim across the Tumen river to China in the hope of getting food from relatives there.

But his father was swept away in the swollen river and Song was caught and sent to a labor camp, the North Korean equivalent of the Soviet-era gulags where the human rights group Amnesty International says 200,000 citizens are forced to work with little food and under threat of execution.

In the freezing Korean winter, Song recalls he was as lightly dressed as when he was arrested in summer.

A finger on his right hand became infected and eventually, he says he was so close to death that his captors could get no work out of him and released him.

But Song was determined to try to get out and in 2002, leaving his mother and sister behind, he made it and ended up in Seoul. After his mother died in 2005, he brought his sister and her family out in 2007 with the help of a broker in China.

"If we had had enough to eat, I would have not come," Song said.

Despite losing his finger, Song took up his brush again. Some of his paintings now show hollow-eyed North Korean girls and smiling, homeless children, known in the North as "fluttering swallows," surrounding Kim.

As for Kim Jong-un, the twenty something son of Kim Jong-il, who will become the third member of the Kim dynasty to rule North Korea, Song says for now, he has no plan to paint him.

"He's too young and I don't want to say yet," said Song.

Unprovoked attacks at heart of 'Knockout King'

(AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)

(AP) ? Matthew Quain still struggles to piece together what happened after a trip to the grocery store nearly turned deadly. He remembers a group of loitering young people, a dimly lit street ? then nothing. The next thing he knew he was waking up with blood pouring out of his head.

The 51-year-old pizza kitchen worker's surreal experience happened just before midnight earlier this year, when he became another victim of what is generally known as "Knockout King" or simply "Knock Out," a so-called game of unprovoked violence that targets random victims.

Scattered reports of the game have come from around the country including Massachusetts, New Jersey and Chicago. In St. Louis, the game has become almost contagious, with tragic consequences. An elderly immigrant from Vietnam died in an attack last spring.

The rules of the game are as simple as they are brutal. A group ? usually young men or even boys as young as 12, and teenage girls in some cases ? chooses a lead attacker, then seeks out a victim. Unlike typical gang violence or other street crime, the goal is not revenge, nor is it robbery. The victim is chosen at random, often a person unlikely to put up a fight. Many of the victims have been elderly. Most were alone.

The attacker charges at the victim and begins punching. If the victim goes down, the group usually scatters. If not, others join in, punching and kicking the person, often until he or she is unconscious or at least badly hurt. Sometimes the attacks are captured on cellphone video that is posted on websites.

"These individuals have absolutely no respect for human life," St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said.

Slay knows firsthand. He was on his way home from a theater around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 when he saw perhaps a dozen young people casually crossing a street. He looked to the curb and saw Quain sprawled on the pavement.

Slay told his driver to pull over. They found Quain unconscious, blood pouring from his head and mouth.

Quain was hospitalized for two days with a broken jaw, a cracked skull and nasal cavity injuries. He still has headaches and memory problems but was finally able to return to work earlier this month. Hundreds gathered in November for a fundraiser at the restaurant where he works, Joanie's Pizza, but he still doesn't know how he'll pay the medical bills.

"I don't remember much of what happened," Quain said. "I was hanging out with a friend, celebrating the Cardinals in the World Series. I went to the store and saw a group of kids who looked out of place, suspicious, but I shrugged it off. I got around to the library, and the next thing I remember is waking up on the corner with the mayor standing next to me. I tried to say 'hi' but my jaw was broken."

It isn't clear how long Knockout King has been around, nor is the exact number of attacks known. The FBI doesn't track it separately, but Slay said he has heard from several mayors about similar attacks and criminologists agree versions of the game are going on in many places.

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom said the city has had about 10 Knockout King attacks over the past 15 months.

Experts say it is a grab for attention.

"We know that juveniles don't think out consequences clearly," said Beth Huebner, an associate professor of criminology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "They see something on YouTube and say, 'I want to get that sort of attention, too.' They don't think about the person they're attacking maybe hitting their head."

Scott Decker, a criminologist at Arizona State, said the attacks are a modern extension of gang-like behavior ? instead of painting over another gang's graffiti as a show of toughness, they beat someone up and post a video on social media sites. The postings spur copycat crimes.

"It's adolescent and early adults, largely male, showing how tough they are. It's done to show off," Decker said.

Earlier this year in Chicago, a group of teens followed an elderly homeless man at a train station. One of the teens walked up to him and punched him in the face, knocking him out as the teen's friends laughed and mocked the man. The exchange was captured on video and posted on a hip-hop site, where it got about a quarter of a million views within two days. The teen was not arrested because police couldn't locate the homeless man to see if he wanted to press charges.

The crimes aren't limited to big cities. In 2009, Adam Taylor had just entered a parking garage in Columbia, Mo. Surveillance footage from the garage showed a group of teens following him. One of the teens attacked, punching Taylor and sending him crashing into a brick wall. A few seconds later, the others joined in, punching and kicking him as he lay on the ground. Taylor suffered bruising on the brain, whiplash and internal bleeding but survived.

Hoang Nguyen wasn't as fortunate.

The 72-year-old retired schoolteacher immigrated to St. Louis from Vietnam with his wife less than four years earlier to be near their daughter. The couple was returning to their apartment after walking to a grocery store on an April morning in broad daylight.

They took a shortcut through an alley, where they saw a group of young people approaching. Suddenly, one of them charged. Hoang was attacked as he stepped in front of his wife to protect her. The attack went on as he begged for mercy, she told police.

Hoang died of massive injuries. Elex Murphy, 18, was charged with first-degree murder and allegedly told police the attack was part of the Knockout King game. His attorney declined to comment.

St. Louis authorities are going to the source to combat further attacks. A special police squad has been assigned to focus on Knockout King, and a city prosecutor is designated for the attacks. But Isom said equally important is an outreach effort to talk to students.

"Certainly we take this very seriously and we're making every effort to stop it," Isom said.

China tests 500 km/h super high-speed train (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China launched a super-rapid test train over the weekend which is capable of travelling 500 kilometers per hour, state media said on Monday, as the country moves ahead with its railway ambitions despite serious problems on its high-speed network.

The train, made by a subsidiary of CSR Corp Ltd, China's largest train maker, is designed to resemble an ancient Chinese sword, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

It "will provide useful reference for current high-speed railway operations," it quoted train expert Shen Zhiyun as saying.

But future Chinese trains will not necessarily run at such high speeds, CSR chairman Zhao Xiaogang told the Beijing Morning News.

"We aims to ensure the safety of trains operation," he said.

China's railway industry has had a tough year, highlighted by a collision between two high-speed trains in July which killed at least 40 people. Construction of new high-speed trains in China has since been a near halt.

In February, the railways minister, Liu Zhijun, a key figure behind the boom in the sector, was dismissed over corruption charges that have not yet been tried in court.

Raiders stay alive with 16-13 OT win over Chiefs

Sebastian Janikowski, Jared Veldheer, Cooper Carlisle

By DAVE SKRETTA

updated 1:30 a.m. ET Dec. 25, 2011

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Carson Palmer knew that Darrius Heyward-Bey, perhaps the Oakland Raiders' fastest wide receiver, could beat the Kansas City Chiefs defense if he went deep down the field.

The Raiders just had to wait for the right moment.

It came on the first play of overtime.

Heyward-Bey beat safety Kendrick Lewis down the left side and Palmer hit him for a 53-yard gain, setting up Sebastian Janikowski's 36-yard field goal 2:13 into overtime Saturday for a 16-13 win that kept the Raiders' playoff hopes alive and eliminated Kansas City from contention.

"It was the right time to call it," Palmer said. "I wanted it earlier, but we saved it for the right time. The protection was flawless and the route was great."

It was just about the only thing that was flawless.

The Raiders committed 15 penalties for 92 yards, one of them ? a delay of game ? wiping out an audacious fake field goal that would have gone for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Palmer also threw a pair of interceptions and the Raiders converted only 3 of 11 third-down opportunities.

"An ugly win is better than a pretty loss," Palmer said.

Especially given the stakes.

Oakland (8-7) can win the AFC West by beating San Diego next week and getting some help from ? of all teams ? the Chiefs, who travel to Denver for a game that's become meaningless to them.

"The man told me, 'Hue, we'll win it in the end.' I believe that," said Raiders coach Hue Jackson, reflecting on a conversation he had with Al Davis before the Raiders owner died in October. "I don't know how it's going to happen. I don't care how it's going to happen."

Oakland led 13-6 late in the fourth quarter when Kyle Orton connected with Dexter McCluster for a 49-yard gain, setting up a short TD toss to Dwayne Bowe with 1:02 remaining in regulation.

The Raiders went three-and-out in short order, giving Kansas City the ball back with only enough time to get into field-goal range. Orton hit Bowe for 25 yards and Terrance Copper for 11 more to set up Ryan Succop, whose 49-yard try was blocked as time ran out.

It was the second field goal that Succop had blocked.

"We had an opportunity to win the game. Those guys came up big," Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali said. "I mean, blocking two field goals ? what's the odds of blocking two field goals in a big game like this? More credit to those guys."

The Raiders, who blew a 13-point lead in the final five minutes to Detroit last week, have won five straight games at Kansas City. Perhaps none was important as this one, with all four teams in the division beginning the day with a chance of squeaking into the playoffs.

The Chiefs (6-9) struggled to take advantage of drives one week after piling up a season-best 438 yards of offense in a 19-14 victory over previously unbeaten Green Bay. That was their first game with Orton under center and interim coach Romeo Crennel calling the shots from the sideline.

Orton threw a pair of interceptions against Oakland, one of them in the end zone in the second quarter and the other as the Chiefs were driving in the fourth quarter.

"I commend everybody for fighting hard and giving us a chance at the end," Orton said.

The first half amounted to a cacophony of errors that ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Raiders, the most penalized team in the NFL and on pace to set a single-season record, were flagged 10 times for 57 yards, while the Chiefs were flagged eight times for 53 yards.

It wasn't just the quantity of penalties, either. It was the quality.

Javier Arenas had an interception of Palmer wiped out by defensive holding in the first quarter, a turnover that would have given Kansas City prime field position.

The Raiders returned the favor on their next possession. Facing fourth-and-2 at the Chiefs 36, they pulled off fake field goal in which punter Shane Lechler, the holder on the play, threw a shovel pass to tight end Brandon Myers, and he ran untouched around end for the touchdown.

It was called back by a delay of game penalty, and Janikowski's 58-yard try hit the crossbar.

Bowe dropped an easy touchdown catch on the Chiefs' ensuing possession, and Orton was picked off by Matt Giordano in the end zone. Palmer gave it right back when Arenas intercepted him.

The Chiefs promptly wasted another scoring opportunity with a staggering string of penalties: intentional grounding, a delay of game and a false start, all in succession. Succop ultimately had his long field attempt blocked by Richard Seymour, his first miss since Sept. 25 at Buffalo.

It wound up being all the more important by the end of regulation.

"Our guys fought and they hung in there, went into overtime, and it took some guts to do that," Crennel said. "We had a couple of field goals blocked, we got a couple balls thrown over our head, we turned the ball over a couple times. In the NFL, it's hard to win when you do those kinds of things."

Notes: The Raiders have been penalized 155 times for 1,293 yards this season. Kansas City has the NFL record with 158 for 1,304, set in 1998. ... Oakland played without RB Darren McFadden (mid-foot sprain) for the eighth straight game. Michael Bush ran 23 times for 70 yards in his place. ... Chiefs S Jon McGraw (ankle) did not play. ... Kansas City C Casey Wiegmann started his 174th consecutive game despite a minor calf injury. ... Succop's first field goal was his 22nd straight, matching Pete Stoyanovich's franchise record.

Apple Files Patents for Fuel Cell Computers (NewsFactor)

A laptop powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, going for weeks without refueling. That vision of the future is described in a pair of patent applications filed by Apple and made public Thursday.

One of the patent applications, entitled Fuel Cell System to Power a Portable Computing Device, describes a fuel cell system with a fuel cell stack that generates electricity, as well as a system controller and a bidirectional communication link between the controller and the device.

'Days or Even Weeks'

The other application, Fuel Cell System Coupled to a Portable Computing Device, describes a fuel cell system that "is capable of both providing power to and receiving power from a rechargeable battery in a portable computing device." The application notes that this would eliminate "the need for a bulky and heavy battery within the fuel cell system," thus significantly reducing the size, weight, and cost of the fuel cell.

Fuel cells, such as hydrogen fuel cells, can pack a lot of electricity-generating power into a small package. As one of the applications noted, "Fuel cells and associated fuels can potentially achieve high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities," which could potentially mean that portable devices could operate for "days or even weeks without refueling." Similarly, the other application's description of linking the fuel cell to the rechargeable battery helps to keep size and weight down, and time between refueling up.

Apple's applications discuss using sodium borohydride powder mixed with water as a fuel, and the hydrogen would be obtained from the sodium borohydride. The hydrogen then mixes with oxygen via a membrane, producing electricity and water vapor.

'Future Proofing'

The integration of the fuel cell system into the device would assumedly be one of the key features for which patent protection is sought. Another patent application by Apple, published in October, described a design for fuel cell plates.

Laura DiDio, an analyst with Information Technology Intelligence Corp., said Apple's patents indicated it was "future proofing and hedging its bets," and that the real question was whether the innovative company "has something cooking like this in the back room?"

She added that it was possible that Apple is not moving forward on this front, but simply looking to protect itself against other companies' ventures into fuel-cell powered mobile computing devices. Even if the Cupertino, Calif.-based company is using some of its large supply of cash to conduct R&D in this area, DiDio said, it was unlikely that mainstream products would emerge in the next decade or so.

As with many large technology companies, patents figure prominently in Apple's strategy. The biggest example of the importance of patents is the ongoing legal war by Apple with Samsung, HTC, and Motorola Mobility, over aspects of those companies' Android-based devices that Apple says violate its patents. Apple recently won a minor victory in its U.S. patent fight with HTC, lost a next step in its war with Samsung in Australia, and both won and lost some battles with Samsung in Europe.

America Invaded by Hordes of Chinese?. Shoppers??

? December 21, 2011Posted in: Defence, Hu's on First, Living

CAN THE CHINESE COMMUNISTS SAVE OBAMA?S FAILING ECONOMY?

Not all Chinese are starving toiling peasants who need safety nets so they don?t jump out of windows at factories where they make iPods for Americans. Some of them have money. Lots of money. Like tour of LA, Vegas, Big Apple and blow $10,000 on rich person stuff BEFORE joining other Chinese storming the gates at the suburban outlets.

Heck, 100 years ago, Americans were chasing Chinese out of their cities. Now they are sending governors to China to set up factories, send students and shoppers to their states.

Groundwater dropping globally

Satellites find supply falling mostly due to agriculture

Web edition : Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO ? Groundwater levels have dropped in many places across the globe over the past nine years, a pair of gravity-monitoring satellites finds. This trend raises concerns that farmers are pumping too much water out of the ground in dry regions.

Water has been disappearing beneath southern Argentina, western Australia and stretches of the United States. The decline is especially pronounced in parts of California, India, the Middle East and China, where expanding agriculture has increased water demand.

?Groundwater is being depleted at a rapid clip in virtually of all of the major aquifers in the world's arid and semiarid regions,? says Jay Famiglietti, a hydrologist at the University of California Center for Hydrologic Modeling in Irvine, whose team presented the new trends December 6 at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Famiglietti and his colleagues detect water hidden below the surface using the modern equivalent of a dowsing rod: a pair of car-sized satellites, nicknamed Tom and Jerry, that are especially sensitive to the tug of gravity from below.

As the spacecraft chase each other around the planet like their cat and mouse namesakes, they are pulled apart and pushed together by areas of higher or lower gravity. Mountains and other large concentrations of mass have a big, obvious effect that?s consistent from month to month. But water moves around over time, creating small gravity fluctuations that the satellites? orbital motions respond to.

It takes a lot of flow to noticeably change the distance between the satellites. After subtracting the contributions of snowpack, rivers, lakes and soil moisture, scientists can detect changes in groundwater greater than a centimeter over an area about the size of Illinois.

This joint mission between NASA and the German Aerospace Center ? called the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, or GRACE ? has been creating monthly snapshots of global groundwater since 2002. The trends now identified in this data help fill in monitoring gaps and confirm problems in places where official groundwater information is unreliable or nonexistent.

?GRACE is very good for areas of the world where we don?t have good ground observations,? says Marc Bierkens, a hydrologist who studies groundwater at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

China, for example, has been shown to underestimate groundwater use. The country lacks the nationwide network of monitoring wells found in the United States. GRACE?s measurements suggest that water levels have been dropping six or seven centimeters per year beneath plains in the northeast.

In some areas, short-term climate variability may be to blame. For example, the plains of Patagonia in Argentina and areas across the southeastern United States ? areas that have been hit hard by droughts ? store less groundwater today than they did in 2002.

But there?s little doubt as to what?s behind the biggest drops: farming. An agricultural boom in northern India has helped to squeeze nearly 18 cubic kilometers of water from the ground every year (SN: 9/12/09, p. 5). That?s enough water to fill more than seven million Olympic swimming pools. And in California?s Central Valley, which supports about one-sixth of the nation?s irrigated land, the ground has been sinking for decades as landowners drill more wells and pull out almost 4 cubic kilometers of water per year (SN: 1/16/10, p. 14).

?People are using groundwater faster than it can be naturally recharged,? says Matthew Rodell, a hydrologist and GRACE team member at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Agricultural pressures are particularly worrisome in places like the Middle East, another hotspot on the new GRACE map. Water pumped out of the Arabian aquifer beneath Saudi Arabia and surrounding countries today fell as rain thousands of years ago. Once this fossil water disappears, there?s little new rainfall to replenish it. ?

Climate change will only worsen the problem, says Famiglietti. Precipitation patterns are becoming more extreme, increasing the severity of droughts. Wet areas are also becoming wetter and dry areas drier, which may accelerate declines in groundwater in some places over the coming years.

But even as the researchers sound the alarm, they don?t know how loud to crank up the volume. GRACE reveals only changes in groundwater. It doesn?t divulge how much water is left.

?We don?t really know how stressed the world?s largest aquifers are,? says Richey.

Some reservoirs, like the giant Nubian Aquifer that underlies North Africa, may be large enough to meet demand for centuries. But few reliable estimates exist of the amount of groundwater stored in the world?s aquifers.

Despite the uncertainties, Leonard Konikow, a hydrogeologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va., says that water use has become unsustainable in many places. Better irrigation systems that use less water could help to curb the problem, he says. So could channeling water during especially wet periods into aquifers instead of letting it run off into the ocean.

?There are too many areas in the world where groundwater development far exceeds a sustainable level,? says Konikow. ?Something will have to change.?

Liverpool's Suarez banned 8 matches for remark

Luis Suarez, Patrice Evra

By ROB HARRIS

updated 4:39 p.m. ET Dec. 20, 2011

LONDON - Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was suspended for eight matches and fined $62,000 on Tuesday after being found guilty of directing a racial insult at Manchester United defender Patrice Evra, who is black.

An English Football Association panel decided that Evra's allegations from United's Premier League match at Liverpool on Oct. 15 had been proven.

"The insulting words used by Mr. Suarez included a reference to Mr. Evra's colour," the FA said in a statement, adding that Suarez had also been warned about his future conduct.

Suarez said on Twitter: "Today is a very difficult and painful day for both me and my family. Thanks for all the support, I'll keep working!..."

Liverpool, which had defended the player, said it was "very surprised and disappointed" with the verdict against the Uruguay forward.

"It is our strong held belief, having gone over the facts of the case, that Luis Suarez did not commit any racist act," Liverpool said.

"It appears to us that the FA were determined to bring charges against Luis Suarez, even before interviewing him at the beginning of November," the statement added. "Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name."

The American-owned club claimed that Evra emphasized in his written statement to the FA that "I don't think that Luis Suarez is racist" and said the governing body echoed that sentiment in its opening statement at the hearing.

"We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone when no one else on the field of play ? including Evra's own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials ? heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth while a corner kick was about to be taken," Liverpool said. "The club takes extremely seriously the fight against all forms of discrimination and has a long and successful track record in work relating to anti-racist activity and social inclusion. We remain committed to this ideal and equality for all, irrespective of a person's background."

The club noted that Suarez is "of a mixed race family background as his grandfather was black" and has been involved since the 2010 World Cup in a charitable project that uses sport to encourage solidarity among people of different backgrounds.

"It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented," Liverpool said. "We do not recognize the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterized."

Liverpool tied the October match with United 1-1.

The FA said that the punishment was suspended, pending any appeal.
