San Diego man extradited to Mexico in child's death

A 36-year-old San Diego man was extradited Thursday to Mexico, where he is accused of sexual abuse and murder in the death of his girlfriend?s 2-year-old daughter.

Joshua Moses Morales was arrested in Corcoran, in central California, in February 2010 by the U.S. Marshals Service, said U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner in Fresno. He was certified for extradition during a federal court hearing in Fresno in April. Morales challenged that finding, but his objection was denied this month.

The extradition request states that Morales is charged with aggravated homicide after allegedly sexually abusing the toddler the night of Feb. 6, 2009, after his girlfriend, Veronica Osorio, left her Tijuana apartment for work at a restaurant.

According to U.S. federal court records, Osorio went to work about 6 p.m. About two hours later, Morales took the child to a neighbor?s apartment and asked for help, saying the girl was dying. The neighbor, Nancy Tabora, told Mexican authorities that she found the child on the floor and not breathing, with her eyes closed, when she went to help.

Morales and his mother took the girl to a hospital, where emergency-room doctors said she was dead. Doctors said that the girl had multiple bruises and signs of sexual abuse. An autopsy determined she died from trauma to the head and deep contusions to the abdomen.

Morales, who is a U.S. citizen, fled to the United States. At the time of the girl?s death, Osorio also had an infant son with Morales, court records said.
