The Dos & Dos Of Dolly Parton - 'Joyful Noise'

Arch angel of the bouffant barnet; queen bee of the peroxide blonde; the undisputed perm princess ? it?s got be Dolly Parton! Ever since she busted (sorry) onto the scene in the late 1960s, Dolly has continually reincarnated herself with hairdos and there?s no slowing her down at 66 years young.

Now starring alongside Queen Latifah in Joyful Noise, a funny and inspirational story of music, hope, love and renewal (out on DVD 5th November), Dolly Parton is right back in the limelight where she belongs.?

In Joyful Noise, the small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies now threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah) stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old.

Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.?s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose?s beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer), and the sparks between the two teenagers are causing even more friction between G.G. and Vi Rose. If these two strong-willed women can put aside their differences for the good of the people in their town, they?and their choir?may make the most joyful noise of all.

Now back to the barnets. Coiffured in everything from mullets to updos, choppy bangs to bouffant bobs, and perms that could?ve been seen from space, there?s never a dull moment in the life of her illustrious strands. So let?s take a look back at Dolly Parton?s greatest hairdo hits...

1. Taken as a talent shot in 1965 while Dolly was still awaiting her big break, this photo shows her rocking a particularly elaborate interpretation of the style at the time, bouffants. In fact this one is enough of a tower to be called a beehive bouffant ? start as you mean to go on, Dolly...

?

2. This 1967 shot pictures Dolly performing with Porter Wagoner, who originally introduced her to the American public on his long-standing TV show. Here Dolly is rocking a Monroe-esque bouffant bob with consummate ease; an understated do compared to some of the styles that were to come...

?

3. Often compared to a Barbie doll throughout her career, there?s definitely a certain resemblance in this photo from the 1977 Grammy Awards. "I'm not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know that I'm not dumb . . . I also know that I'm not blonde," she was once quoted as saying.

?

4. Dolly rocked a number of perm looks throughout the 80s, starting with a perm bob in her much-loved 1980 movie, 9 to 5. But none of them can beat this towering masterpiece from 1987 ? it was less a hairdo, more a geographical point of interest.

?

5. She didn?t stick solely with the perm in the 80s though, and debuted this choppy bangs with short crown layers style on the red carpet for the 1988 People?s Choice Awards. It?s a style that she?s stuck close to ever since, albeit with a healthy dose of variation on the theme.

?

6. Surely every country musician from the 80s and 90s has had a mullet at some point, and Dolly is no exception. Here she is at the 1993 Country Music Awards with a feathered mullet of sorts, but in typical Dolly style she pulls it off and side-steps one of the era?s synonymous mullet atrocities.

?

7. Taking the layered, choppy bangs do in a more rock chic direction, this photo from the 2003 Country Music Awards pictures Dolly in one of her edgier looks from across the years. It?s not in Courtney Love territory by any stretch of the imagination, but we can see where she was going with it.

?

8. And finally onto January of this year at the Joyful Noise premiere in LA, where Dolly once again sported voluminous hair the likes of which us mere mortals can only dream of. Stronger than spider?s silk, it?s the eighth wonder of the world that is Dolly?s glorious hair.

Joyful Noise will be released in the UK on DVD with an UltraViolet digital copy on November 5.
