Strong female portrayals counteract negative effects of violent media for young adults

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Men and women are less likely to experience negative effects to sexual violent media when watching a positive portrayal of a strong female character, even when that character is a victim of sexual violence.

Christopher Ferguson, Assistant Professor at Texas A&M International University, surveyed 150 university students in a controlled environment in a recent study published in the Journal of Communication. Each participant screened a variety of TV shows that portrayed women in different lights when it came to sexual violence. The results showed that men and women had less anxiety and negative reactions when viewing television shows that depicted a strong female character rather than a submissive one.

Past research has been inconsistent regarding the effects of sexually violent media on viewer's hostile attitudes toward women. Much of the previous literature has conflated possible variables such as sexually violent content with depictions of women as subservient.

The submissive characters often reflect a negative gender bias that women and men find distasteful. This outweighed the sexual violence itself, giving credence to what Ferguson calls the "Buffy Effect" -- named after the popular television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its strong lead female character.

"Although sexual and violent content tends to get a lot of attention, I was surprised by how little impact such content had on attitudes toward women. Instead it seems to be portrayals of women themselves, positive or negative that have the most impact, irrespective of objectionable content. In focusing so much on violence and sex, we may have been focusing on the wrong things," Ferguson said.

"While it is commonly assumed that viewing sexually violent TV involving women causes men to think negatively of women, the results of this carefully designed study demonstrate that they do so only when women are portrayed as weak or submissive," added Journal of Communication editor and University of Washington Professor Malcolm Parks. "Positive depictions of women challenge negative stereotypes even when the content includes sexuality and violence. In this way Ferguson reminds us that viewers often process popular media portrayals in more subtle ways than critics of all political stripes give them credit for."

Living against the clock; Does loss of daily rhythms cause obesity?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? When Thomas Edison tested the first light bulb in 1879, he could never have imagined that his invention could one day contribute to a global obesity epidemic. Electric light allows us to work, rest and play at all hours of the day, and a paper published this week in Bioessays suggests that this might have serious consequences for our health and for our waistlines.

Daily or "circadian" rhythms including the sleep wake cycle, and rhythms in hormone release are controlled by a molecular clock that is present in every cell of the human body. This human clock has its own inbuilt, default rhythm of almost exactly 24 hours that allows it to stay finely tuned to the daily cycle generated by the rotation of Earth. This beautiful symmetry between the human clock and the daily cycle of Earth's rotation is disrupted by exposure to artificial light cycles, and by irregular meal, work and sleep times. This mismatch between the natural circadian rhythms of our bodies and the environment is called "circadian desynchrony."

The paper, by Dr. Cathy Wyse, working in the chronobiology research group at the University of Aberdeen, focuses on how the human clock struggles to stay in tune with the irregular meal, sleep and work schedules of the developed world, and how this might influence health and even cause obesity.

"Electric light allowed humans to override an ancient synchronization between the rhythm of the human clock and the environment, and over the last century, daily rhythms in meal, sleep and working times have gradually disappeared from our lives," said Wyse. "The human clock struggles to remain tuned to our highly irregular lifestyles, and I believe that this causes metabolic and other health problems, and makes us more likely to become obese."

"Studies in microbes, plants and animals have shown that synchronization of the internal clock with environmental rhythms is important for health and survival, and it is highly likely that this is true in humans as well."

The human clock is controlled by our genes, and the research also suggests that some people may be more at risk of the effects of circadian desynchrony than others. For example, humans originating from Equatorial regions may have clocks that are very regular, which might be more sensitive to the effects of circadian desynchrony.

Shiftwork, artificial light and the 24-hour lifestyle of the developed world mean that circadian desynchrony is now an inevitable part of 21st century life. Nevertheless, we can help to maintain healthy circadian rhythms by keeping regular meal times, uninterrupted night-time sleep in complete darkness, and by getting plenty of sunlight during daylight hours.

Dr. Wyse believes that circadian desynchrony affects human health by disrupting the systems in the brain that regulate metabolism, leading to an increased likelihood of developing obesity and diabetes.

"The reason for the relatively sudden increase in global obesity in the developed world seems to be more complicated than simply just diet and physical activity. There are other factors involved, and circadian desynchrony is one that deserves further attention."

"Our 24-hour society has come at the high price of circadian desynchrony," concluded Wyse. "There are many factors driving mankind towards obesity but disrupted circadian rhythms should be considered alongside the usual suspects of diet and exercise."

Searching For Ajman Real Estate Agents | Sr22 Insurance Online ...

An Ajman real estate agent is not different from others in the same field of work in other places. The work they do is similar. The only difference may be the environment in which they work and perhaps the financial returns from their work. The search for a realtor can be very frustrating.

There are dubious business people who are out to make quick cash from unsuspecting home buyers. It is very easy to get land into the wrong hands when looking to make property investments. There are several factors that need to be considered before making the all-important purchase.

It is important to consider the reputability of the landed property dealer. A reputable dealer is bound to give value for money and is less likely to take one for a ride. Doing a background check on the Realtor before choosing to make an investment with them. This activity may be instrumental in ensuring that one does not get into business with a conman. One can ask friends or relatives who have had an experience with the Realtor in question for their opinion on his or her services. Such friends and relatives may also be in a position to recommend other reputable realty agents.

Another alternative would be to hire the services of a property development company. There are both advantages and disadvantages of doing this. Some of the advantages are the fact that these firms are more reliable than dealers who work on their own. One can rest safe in the knowledge that he or she is dealing with trustworthy people. The likelihood of being conned is reduced when dealing with a firm. The down side of transacting business through h a firm is that it is more costly than dealing with individual property dealers. The advantages that come with firms are accompanied by the disadvantage of having to dig deeper into the pockets.

However, it is of vital importance to be sure that the firm in question is legitimate. Legitimate in this case means that it is registered with the relevant authorities and it is licensed to deal in real estate. Non-registered firms are not authorized to transact any business that is related to the property market. Dealing with such a firm is not acceptable even according to the law.

A common tactic that con-men use is selling property that does not exist in reality. A prospective property owner needs to confirm that the property being sold to him or her does exist in reality. This may involve seeking answers from the relevant authorities. In addition to this, one must also confirm that the property is up for sale. The property might be existent yes, but the owner does not intend to sell it.

Of course, it is also important to consider the cost of services offered by the agents. The English saying that advises one to cut their coat according to their cloth very much applies here. It does not make sense for a low-income earner to hire the services of a high-end Realtor. One needs to go for a Realtor that he or she can comfortably afford without much strain. These are just few of the factors to consider when looking for a property dealer.

At one point in life, there will be a need for one to buy property. Looking for Ajman real estate agents can be very stressful. With the right knowledge on hoe to go about it however, it should not be very difficult. One only needs to know what he wants in a Realtor and choose to settle for anything less.

Love life: Ex-cepting their friendships with exes | Cambridge Day

By Eileen Smith
August 29, 2012

If trust is the backbone of good relationships, there is no reason for your significant other not to hang out with an ex. Right? (Photo: Lucie Ottobruc)

When you reach a certain age, you can pretty much assume whomever you are dating has dated somebody else. You are holding hands with everyone they?ve ever held hands with and kissing everybody they?ve ever kissed. And chances are you have also dated other people. (I could continue, but I think you get the point, and I?m probably sparing you an unwelcome visual.)

My friend recently made a profile on OkCupid and had to answer a detailed survey with questions such as ?Should women be expected to shave their legs?? and ?Would you date someone who likes to role play rape fantasies?? Another question: ?How would you feel about your significant other hanging out with an ex as friends??

This is a tricky question. On one hand, I do not feel like I have any right to tell him who he can and cannot hang out with. Nor do I want him to think of me as controlling. If trust is the backbone of good relationships, there is no reason for me not to trust he wants to be with me. And there?s a reason they are not together anymore.

At the same time, though, a green-eyed monster emerges at the idea of him having any kind of relationship with his ex. After all, it?s not just one girl; it is someone with whom he shares history. He felt chemistry with her. What if he starts to feel that chemistry again in a less stressful, less time-consuming relationship in which it does not matter as much if he forgets to call? If they become emotionally close, is the physical aspect of the relationship the only thing separating his relationship with me from his relationship with her?

What if their friendship goes way back and I am just the third wheel? Could I get into a relationship with somebody knowing that no matter what happens between the two of us, she will always be there? Should I just hope he and I will become closer with time and that our romantic relationship can and will eclipse a close platonic bond that was formerly romantic?

The answer depend on three variables. The first is the personality of who I?m dating: Is he a flirt by nature, or just the type who likes to stay on good terms with people? Does he have close friendships with multiple exes or just one in particular with whom he had a particularly passionate relationship?

Which leads right into the second variable: What was the nature of their relationship? Did they have a passionate romance leading to a never-quite-resolved breakup, or did the romance just fizzle out and they realized they were better as friends? Why did the relationship end in the first place? That may seem like a prying question, but if the last relationship ended because he cheated with an ex who became his friend, that might be important information.

The last, and possibly most important variable: you. What is your general personality? Do you have a tendency to become insecure and jealous easily? How hard is it for you to genuinely trust to another person? Although I tend to trust people fairly easily, I also have a tendency to become insecure and second-guess intentions. This may seem contradictory, but it?s why it?s hard for me to feel comfortable with my boyfriends being friends with their exes.

In any case, it is hard to answer the question ?How do you feel about your significant other being friends with their exes?? with a simple mouse click.

NVIDIA, Epic Games bringing Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows RT video

NVIDIA and Epic Games have successfully ported the full PC version of Unreal Engine 3 to both Windows 8 and, more importantly, Windows RT. Demonstrating the achievement on a Tegra 3-powered ASUS Vivo Tab RT, it played a buttery-smooth version of Epic Citadel, suggesting that developers of both PC and Xbox games should have no problem in bringing them over to the new operating system. It also casually mentioned that both Gears of War and Mass Effect were built on the engine, heavily implying that we could see titles of that caliber coming to Microsoft's low-power OS once it makes it debut on October 26th, but we'll let you decide for yourself after the break.

As Those With Autism Get Older, Fewer Proven Interventions ...

As Those With Autism Get Older, Fewer Proven Interventions AvailableResearchers say current interventional therapies for autism among adolescents and young adults are not supported, or refuted, by existing outcome evidence.

Vanderbilt University scientists say the dearth of evidence calls for an immediate round of structured interventions that can be accurately tracked for success or failure.

Although the prevalence of autism is on the rise, much remains to be discovered when it comes to interventions for this population, the researchers concluded.

?Overall, there is very little evidence in all areas of care for adolescents and young adults with autism, and it is urgent that more rigorous studies be developed and conducted,? said Melissa McPheeters, Ph.D., M.P.H., and senior author of the report.

The report is a systematic review of therapies published by the Department of Health and Human Services? Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

Zachary Warren, Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center?s Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders, said, ?There are growing numbers of adolescents and adults with autism in need of substantial support.

?Without a stronger evidence base, it is very hard to know which interventions will yield the most meaningful outcomes for individuals with autism and their families.?

As a basis for the report, researchers systematically screened more than 4,500 studies and reviewed the 32 studies published from January 1980 to December 2011 on therapies for people ages 13 to 30 with autism spectrum disorders.

They focused on the outcomes, including harms and adverse effects, of interventions, including medical, behavioral, educational and vocational.

  • Some evidence revealed that treatments could improve social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary or reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up;
  • Limited evidence supports the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism. The most consistent findings were identified for the effects of antipsychotic medications on reducing problem behaviors that tend to occur with autism, such as irritability and aggression. Harms associated with medications included sedation and weight gain;
  • Only five articles tested vocational interventions, all of which suggested that certain vocational interventions may be effective for certain individuals, but each study had significant flaws that limited the researchers? confidence in their conclusions.

The researchers? findings on vocational interventions will be featured in the Aug. 27 issue of Pediatrics.

Newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder. Boys with autism outnumber girls 5-to-1, which which works out to one in 54 boys in the U.S. with? autism.

?With more and more youth with autism leaving high school and entering the adult world, there is urgent need for evidence-based interventions that can improve their quality of life and functioning,? said Julie Lounds Taylor, Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics and special education and lead author of the report.

Biotech is thrusting us into new political territory

Stem cells, embryo research and synthetic biology are just a few of the issues that will force strange new political alliances

NOBODY is immune from the feeling that change is accelerating with each passing year. This sense of "future shock" is perhaps most closely associated with information technology. We've all experienced the anxiety, frustration and resentment that accompanies the introduction of a new version of software on which we depend, or the realisation that people younger than ourselves have adopted a new technology that makes their lifestyle seem very different from our own.

Worries about rapid change also bubble up in response to scientific progress, especially when it raises moral questions. We've seen this time and again with controversies over evolution, reproductive rights, the origin of the universe and nearly all issues in science that relate to human values.

Biology is an especially volatile source of sensitivities. The old biology was mainly observational, but the new biology, or biotechnology - including stem cells, embryo research, synthetic biology and reproductive technology - has unprecedented power to change basic life processes.

Such sensitivities are understandable. People rightly feel that high stakes are involved when science challenges our customary and largely workable moral framework.

And there is, of course, hyperbole associated with biotech. But even if only some of the predictions bear fruit, the new biology will challenge everything in its path, including our understanding of ourselves, our relationship with the world, our social arrangements and values and our political systems. The new biology is thus becoming part of political life. Candidates for national political office need to have staked out positions on these issues.

Biology and politics already intersect, of course. A good example is the abortion controversy, a recurrent theme in the US since the 1970s, with both sides trying to influence the decision over whether to continue a pregnancy or not.

But this issue is relatively uncomplicated compared with what is to come. The straightforwardness of the available positions (anti-abortion or pro-choice) is vastly outstripped by the scenarios that will be forced on us by the new biology.

One recent example is the controversy over the "three-parent embryo". This is a technology for avoiding mitochondrial disease whereby nuclear DNA from an egg with defective mitochondria is injected into an egg from another woman with healthy mitochondria, and the resulting egg can then be fertilised. To some this is perfectly acceptable. To others it smacks of eugenics. This is just one example of how, in the early 21st century, we are crossing the threshold to a new biopolitical world.

Already there are more protagonists than in the past. Science, the state, industry and religious organisations are just some of the parties vying for control.

What is more, familiar ideological labels are poor predictors of policy positions. US anti-genetic-engineering activist Jeremy Rifkin was perhaps the first to notice that anxieties about biology cut across the political spectrum. He noted more than a decade ago in an article for UK newspaper The Guardian: "The current debate over... biotech issues, is beginning to reshape the whole political landscape in ways no one could have imagined just a few years ago."

Rifkin was right: biopolitical issues increasingly make for strange political bedfellows and alliances of convenience as people with differing sympathies make common cause.

In one camp are bioprogressives who are supportive of the new biology from opposite sides of the traditional political divide. Those on the left emphasise regulation, equality and the common good, while those on the right emphasise free enterprise as the most reliable source of innovation.

There are also several flavours of bioconservative. Some are religious traditionalists, others are secular neoconservatives who regard science as a threat to human dignity, moral equality and human nature itself. Bioconservatives are increasingly joined by "green" progressives who harbour deep doubts about the implications of science for social justice.

The b?te noire of all types of bioconservatives is the small but growing movement called transhumanism, which enthusiastically embraces technological change. Transhumanists see the prospects for drastic enhancements in what bioconservatives regard as an essential human nature that is too precious and fragile to withstand manipulation.

In a foretaste of the strange new biopolitical alliances to come, consider the shortage of organs for transplant. The established view among liberals and conservatives is that virtually any incentive for donation is morally unacceptable. But some libertarians and some on the left decry the loss of thousands of lives each year while suitable organs, especially kidneys, are not made available. Although they are poles apart on most issues, they agree that policy options for incentives should be explored.

It's hard to say how great the scale of political changes wrought by the new biology will be, but there can be little doubt that we are heading into uncharted territory. We might hold out hope that all sides can be convinced that science, within carefully negotiated limits, can enhance and enrich our quality of life. But what counts as enhancement and enrichment will be a matter of negotiation. That is the subject matter of the new biopolitics.

If politics is, as I believe it is, the only alternative to violence, these matters are worthy of the best politics we can muster.

Jonathan D. Moreno is a bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His latest book is The Body Politic: The battle over science in America (Bellevue Literary Press)

Proper branding of your business includes a good email marketing strategy. For this reason, it is important to create a template that incorporates your logo, and consistent formatting throughout all your marketing materials. This will make your emails unique and instantly recognizable.

Make succinct subjects. Try to keep your subject line at or below 60 characters. This will help to grab the attention of your consumers, making them want to read the contents of your email. If you do not feel that you can keep your subject brief, put the most crucial information at the start of the subject.

Keep tabs on the email marketing campaigns of your competitors. Obtain an email address specifically for this purpose, and sign up for their lists, using it. Knowing what they are doing will help ensure that your e-mail campaigns are better than their campaigns. Try to see what is missing in their campaigns and develop it in your own. Try to develop a better promotion than they are offering.

Each email should have one obvious message. Keep your content concise and focused, so your customers do not become disinterested. Formulate one text only, and make sure it is brief and concise. This will create a happy reader, that translates into a happy customer.

Covering all bases when it comes to email marketing requires utilizing multi-part messages. Emails that have both plain text content and HTML exist, and they can display correctly regardless of the option that the recipient likes. The extra effort that this requires is worth it, since not all of your subscribers will be capable of reading HTML-based emails and will quickly unsubscribe from an HTML-only list.

Personalizing your email marketing will make it more important in the eyes of your reader. Readers are far more likely to delete emails or even unsubscribe when the message they?re reading feels like a form letter. Putting the recipient?s name into the email is simple; there is much more that can be done. Pinpoint why, when and where they signed up for your emails. Use all of this information to focus your message to your readers? needs.

Always proofread your emails. It is imperative that your emails be error free. Prior to message distribution, test email layouts so you know for sure that all the text and elements show up in your preferred way. Also, if you place links in your email, test them to make sure they work.

Your email marketing content should be attention grabbing. Getting it to that point might require a bit of trial and error. You should change any aspect of your approach that?s not working. Even if a particular technique does seem successful, continue trying new strategies to constantly improve your campaign.

Preheader material can be quite beneficial, as it helps you to instantly grab your reader?s attention. A preheader is simply the first line from your email?s body text, and it?s placed in a prominent location. Gmail and other email clients display this line of text immediately following the subject, so this is a great way to get reader attention.

It is very smart to have people double opt-in in order to receive email messages from you. While it may seem like overkill, it is a great way to guarantee that your customers actually want emails from you, which could save you from future trouble.

The primary reason for email marketing is to lead customers to purchase your products or services. Your emails should bring readers a bit closer to actually buying. You could do this by making an email that highlights information about a new product, promotes an older product or offers a special deal.

A good email marketing campaign is economical, fairly quick and can produce major results for your business. As this article demonstrates, it is also pretty easy to put one together. Why aren?t you already using this marketing technique for your own business? Use these tips to see how email marketing can boost your business

The FAA Is Seriously Thinking About Letting You Use Electronic Devices During Takeoff [Airplanes]

After announcing it would take a 'fresh look' at the ban of using electronic devices during takeoff and landing, the FAA has just announced that it'll be forming a new committee to study, analyze and reconsider the issue. That means there's a very good possibility that we'll be able to use our electronic devices whenever the hell we want when we're on a plane. More »

Iran might let diplomats visit suspected nuclear site

DUBAI/VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran indicated on Monday it might allow diplomats visiting Tehran for this week's Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit to go to the Parchin military base, which U.N. nuclear experts say may have been used for nuclear-related explosives tests.

When asked about the possibility, Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh said: "Such a visit is not customary in such meetings...However at the discretion of authorities, Iran would be ready for such a visit," the Iranian government-linked news agency Young Journalists Club reported.

The tentative offer was made just three days after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) again failed to gain access to Parchin for its inspectors at a meeting with an Iranian delegation in Vienna.

Iran is hosting the NAM summit, which ends on Friday, at a time when the West is trying to isolate the Islamic Republic over suspicions it is seeking a nuclear weapons capability. Tehran says its atomic program has only peaceful aims.

Any visit to Parchin by NAM representatives would do little to calm Western concerns or those of the IAEA whose talks with Iran on the agency's stalled probe into suspected atom bomb research in the Islamic state ended on Friday without agreement.

"Any tour the Iranians conduct for visiting NAM officials would be nothing more than a very, very bad publicity stunt," a senior Western diplomat in Vienna told Reuters. "It is the IAEA that should have been given access to Parchin."

The U.N. body suspects that Iran has conducted explosives tests in a steel chamber at Parchin relevant for the development of nuclear weapons, possibly a decade ago.

"RIDICULOUS"

Citing satellite pictures, Western diplomats say they suspect Iran in recent months has been cleansing the site where the experiments are believed to have taken place of any evidence of illicit nuclear activity.

The IAEA is voicing growing concern that this would hamper its investigation if it ever gained access to Parchin.

Last week diplomatic sources said Iran had covered the building believed to house the explosives chamber with a tent-like structure, fuelling suspicions about a clean-up there.

Iran says Parchin, a vast complex southeast of Tehran, is a conventional military facility and has dismissed allegations about it as "ridiculous".

Monday's Iranian media report did not make clear whether the NAM diplomats would be able to visit the location in Parchin which the IAEA wants to see or only other areas of the complex.

Akhoundzadeh said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is due to attend the NAM summit later in the week, might be able to visit Iran's atom sites, but his spokesman denied any such plan.

"There are no such plans for a visit of that kind by the secretary-general while he is in Iran for the Non-Aligned Movement summit," spokesman Martin Nesirky said in New York.

"Of course, if the Iranian authorities are prepared to provide access to others, not least of course those from the International Atomic Energy Agency, that would be welcome."

In early 2011, Iran invited Vienna-based diplomats to tour its nuclear facilities, an offer dismissed by Western states as a ploy by Tehran to appear to show openness while still refusing to give IAEA experts the kind of access they need.

Syrian captors 'release Lebanese hostage'

One of 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims taken hostage by Syrian rebels has been released and arrived in Turkey, according to a video aired by Al-Jazeera news channel on Saturday.

Hussein Ali Omar appeared in a video crossing the border into Turkey, and then speaking to the Doha-based channel praising his captors, insisting he and the others were "guests, not captives."

"We thank the brothers, rebels of Syria, for their treatment... We have been guests, not captives," he said in the footage.

"We call on the Lebanese people and the dormant Arab peoples, to stand up and support this oppressed people of Syria," he said.

The captors said in a statement that Omar was released as a "goodwill gesture" in response to a request by a group of Lebanese Muslim clerics.

The statement said that the fate of the remaining captives would be determined "after sending letters to countries neighbouring Syria." It did not elaborate.

Lebanese media had reported that four of the hostages were killed when a government warplane bombed the northern Syrian town of Aazaz earlier this month.

Police study case of teen allegedly held captive for over 3 years

CHICAGO (AP) ? Days after police stormed a southwestern Illinois home on the allegation that a teenage girl had been held captive and forced into sex, authorities wouldn't say whether an ongoing investigation would result in additional charges.

Two people were charged in the case on Saturday, but none of the charges allege that the St. Louis, Mo., woman, now 19 years old, was held against her will for more three years.

"We are still investigating," Washington Park Police Chief David Clark told The Associated Press on Sunday. He declined to comment further.

Steven Johnson, 25, of Washington Park, faces several charges, but authorities said just one charge ? aggravated criminal sexual assault ? is connected to the case. St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly said Saturday that Stephen Johnson had sex with the teenager when she was underage.

Johnson also faces a promotion of prostitution charge, two felony drug charges and a felony gun charge.

His mother, 54-year-old Owida Johnson, was charged two counts of child endangerment. Both were arrested Thursday.

Attempts to reach the Johnsons, who were in police custody, were unsuccessful Sunday. It was unclear if they had attorneys.

Police said the 19-year-old woman fled the house Monday with the help of a relative. She told authorities that she was beaten daily, sexually assaulted and forced to have a child, and that she repeatedly tried to escape the house, which is on the edge of East St. Louis.

She also told police that Owida Johnson had helped detain her and falsify medical records when the now 2-year-old child was born.

Police found the children living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, including exposed wiring, spoiled food in the refrigerator, animal feces, insects and vermin, Kelly said. The children are in the custody of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Police say the teenager told them she met the suspect through a social acquaintance and visited his home around the time she was reported missing in April 2009. The man wouldn't allow her to go back to her parents, she told police.

Members of the Johnson family have refuted the woman's allegations in local newspapers, saying she was never held against her will and was free to leave as she pleased.

Bail for Steven Johnson has been set at $2 million, while Owida Johnson's bail was set at $15,000.

Sunderland vs. Reading EPL match postponed

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:58 a.m. ET Aug. 25, 2012

SUNDERLAND, England (AP) -Sunderland's Premier League match on Saturday against Reading has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The northeastern club says on its website there was "torrential rain across Wearside overnight and throughout Saturday" at the Stadium of Light.

Referee Neil Swarbrick called the game off following a pitch inspection. A new date has not yet been announced.

The postponement means Reading fans will have made a 960-kilometer round-trip from the south without seeing their side play.

Green Blog: Will Emissions Disclosure Mean Investor Pressure on Polluters?

A new financial tool developed by the investment firm South Pole Carbon, in partnership with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, provides greenhouse gas emissions profiles of more than 40,000 publicly listed companies. This index is aimed at encouraging greater disclosure from companies while, hopefully, also pushing investors to build more responsible portfolios.

?Investors have long been aware that the greenhouse gas profile, especially of major emitters like electric utilities, is a potential liability,? said Paul Bledsoe, a senior adviser on energy issues at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

The natural gas industry, for example, has cited the possibility of regulation of greenhouse gas emissions by the Environmental Protection Agency to help explain its market rise next to coal?s loss of market share. And a recent open letter to the Bank of England that included signatories from Oxford University and the London School of Economics admonished the bank to ?investigate how the U.K.?s exposure to high-carbon investments might pose a systemic risk to our financial system.?

Nonetheless, in the absence of strong greenhouse gas regulation, it is unclear how significantly emission patterns contribute to investor decision-making, Mr. Bledsoe said. Over the last three decades, many investors have focused increasingly on short-term returns. For those who do, the shifting winds of policy debate or the comparatively glacial process of policy development are largely irrelevant. That means such considerations tend not to surface in share value.

?Most investing is done very quickly,? said Brad Gentry, a professor at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies who specializes in the connection between private investment and environmental performance. ?This is a huge problem in terms of reflecting? the potential risk contained in a company?s greenhouse gas emissions.

And yet, in not-so-subtle irony, one of the direct effects of these emissions has unequivocal influence over many investments: A recent survey by the nonprofit research group Ceres found that 77 percent of asset managers view climate change as a material risk or opportunity.

An investment firm might forgo investment in a beachside resort in light of the risk from rising seas, but that same firm would have little problem investing in Exxon Mobil, even if its emissions are contributing to rising seas.

Beyond its debated usefulness to investors, Mr. Gentry indicated that companies were using this data in surprising and often sophisticated ways, scrutinizing, for example, the potential for high emissions to tarnish a brand. ?This kind of information is used widely by companies, and it?s their behavior you ultimately want to affect,? he said.

These emissions profiles can also feed information into the growing area of legally mandated disclosure initiatives, like the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program in the United States and coming regulation in Britain that will target 1,600 companies on the London Stock Exchange.

Hiding at the heart of indexes like this one is an unresolved question about the private sector?s role in limiting greenhouse gas emissions: What is the ideal balance between government and private involvement in any transition away from fossil fuels or other major sources of greenhouse gases? transition? How much can ? or should ? business spur change, and how much can ? or should ? government policy exert pressure? And what mechanisms might most efficiently push capital from high-carbon to low-carbon technologies and industries?
