Stock futures fall in pause after rally, mixed earnings

By Angela Moon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street was set for a lower open on Friday as the market took a breather from a recent rally that has taken the S&P 500 up 18.5 percent for the year and as investors digested a slew of major earnings.

Major U.S. stock indexes have advanced steadily this year with the S&P 500 hitting an all-time high earlier this week. The broad market index has ended higher 13 times in the past 16 sessions. For July, the benchmark has added 5.2 percent.

"As investors absorb many earnings reports this morning, they are also questioning, 'Can we get through the 1,700 (on the S&P 500)? Can we get a push beyond this round number?'" said Andre Bakhos, director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York.

"I still think the short-term weakness will just provide more buying opportunities for investors that have missed the boat."

In economic news, the ThomsonReuters/University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index is due at 9:55 a.m. ET.

S&P 500 futures fell 8.3 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 63 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures lost 5.5 points.

On Thursday, the S&P 500 added 4.31 points, or 0.26 percent, to end at 1,690.25.

In earnings, Starbucks Inc (SBUX) shares rose 7 percent to $72.94 in premarket trade, a day after the world's biggest coffee chain posted a bigger-than-expected jump in quarterly profit.

Falling shares included Amazon.com Inc (AMZN), which lost 1.7 percent to $298.23 in premarket trade after the company's forecast disappointed on income and revenue. Amazon.com is faced with a weaker international market, overshadowing improved profit and economic conditions in the United States.

Zynga Inc (ZNGA.O) shares plunged 17.4 percent in premarket trade a day after the company announced it will largely abandon its efforts to build an online gaming business in the United States.

Online travel agency Expedia Inc (EXPE) shares plunged 23 percent to $50.20 a day after the company reported a quarterly profit far short of market estimates due to higher competition and poor performance in its discount website, Hotwire.com.

As of Thursday's close, 47 percent of the S&P 500 companies reported earnings, and about 68 percent of them have topped profit forecasts, above the historical average of 63 percent. About 56 percent have reported better-than-expected revenue, a rate that is below the historical average.

In M&A news, Vivendi (VIV.PA) plans to sell the bulk of its stake in Activision Blizzard Inc (ATVI.O) to the video games maker and its management for $8.2 billion, the French conglomerate's second blockbuster deal in a week.

Activision shares, one of the most traded in premarket, jumped 16.6 percent to $17.72.

European shares edged lower on Friday. Germany's DAX (.GDAXI) market had already unsettled some investors this week with profit warnings from some of its leading companies. (.EU)

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei share average slid 3 percent and was near a three-week low on Friday, with blue-chip exporters and financials leading declines on the back of a stronger yen and profit-taking. (.T)

Woman dies in fall from Six Flags Over Texas roller coaster

By David Ferguson
Saturday, July 20, 2013 13:17 EDT

?

Onlookers were horrified Friday night when a woman fell to her death from one of the tallest roller coasters in the world at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas. According to CBS News, investigators are trying to determine whether safety workers at the ride failed to properly secure the woman in her seat when the ride began.

Witnesses who were behind the woman in line say that staffers of the Texas Giant ? which is billed as the tallest steel-hybrid roller coaster in the world ? did not completely fasten the woman?s safety harness.

?They didn?t secure her right,? said Carmen Brown of Arlington, Texas. ?One of the employees from the park ? one of the ladies ? she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, `As long you heard it click, you?re OK.? Everybody else is like, `Click, click, click.? Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn?t feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride.?

Moments later, Brown said, she and other park visitors heard screams.

?We heard her screaming. We were like, `Did she just fall??? Brown said.

The accident took place around 6:30 p.m. and emergency personnel quickly arrived on the scene, although they initially had some difficulty locating the woman?s body. Six Flags over Texas spokesperson Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the Texas Giant, but declined to name the specifics of the fatality.

The section of the park around the Texas Giant will be closed indefinitely as the investigation proceeds. The roller coaster was redesigned from an all-wooden construction into a wood and steel hybrid coaster in 2011.

A Japan Airlines Boeing Dreamliner Just Made A U-Turn Mid-Flight

A Japan Airlines 787 Dreamliner flying from Boston to Tokyo turned around not long after taking off and has returned safely to Boston:

The airline's website says the Boeing jet is returning to the airport "due to aircraft maintenance."

Right now, the plane is in a holding airport, possibly waiting for other traffic to clear out. It could also be dumping fuel, to make landing safer.

According to NYC Aviation, the issue has to do with the plane's fuel pump, and is not an emergency:

Boston Logan Airport confirmed the premature return is a precaution:

The plane has now landed safely in Boston:

Pikmin 3 is apparently selling well in Japan

http://www.dualshock...anese-retailer/

?

?

?

Nintendo is counting a lot on Pikmin 3 to drive the sales of the Wii U, and one day before the release of the Media Create software and hardware charts there are already signals of some degree of success.

The major japanese retailer and rental chain Tsutaya released its own weekly charts and Pikmin 3 is indeed at the top, followed by Level 5?s Youkai Watch, Earth Defense Force 4 and the two version of Toukiden (the PS Vita version is 4th and the PSP version is 5th).

According to Taketo Matsuo, Tsutaya?s Director of? the Game Rental Planning Group, strong sales of the game are also moving units of the console (as reported by ManTanWeb).

??

? "Pikmin 3, that came out nine years after Pikmin 2, is having a really good start. Sales at Tsutaya are comparable to the release of Super Mario Bros U and have driven greater sales of? Wii U units."

?

The fact that he used Super Mario Bros U as a term of comparisons helps us put the statement in perspective: during its first week of sale in Japan Mario?s latest platformer moved 163,528 units, which is a very respectable amount, even if it was completely beaten by Yakuza 5 (that sold 356,757 copies). Of course that was the release week of the Wii U in Japan, so the installed base was still very small.

Tomorrow we?ll get last week?s Media Create sales charts and we?ll be able to see just how much Pikmin 3 helped the Wii U in the archipelago of the rising sun.

DeBear out as Plymouth girls hoops coach

Add Plymouth's varsity girls basketball team as the latest at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park to have changes at the top.

The Wildcats will not have head coach Bob deBear on the sidelines, as he stepped down -- with last year's assistant coach Nick Brandon the front-runner to take the post.

Brandon Tuesday night would not officially confirm that deBear would not return or that he was a candidate for the permanent spot.

Several times he deferred confirmation to Sue Heinzman, the district's athletic director in charge of basketball.

Later Wednesday, in an email from Heinzman to the Observer, the departure of deBear was confirmed. It did not indicate whether the coach was relieved of his duties or left on his own.

"Bob deBear will not be returning as the Plymouth girls basketball coach next year," Heinzman's email began. "Currently, Nick Brandon and Patrick Foley are co-coaching for the remainder of the summer. The job has been posted and I expect to hire a new coach this fall by the end of September.

"We appreciate the three years Bob deBear was at the helm of the program. I have no further comments regarding Coach debear."

The official team website lists Brandon as the point man for players to contact.

"For summer workouts and shootouts for current high school players please view the link 'About Girls Basketball' and click on the link 'Announcements.' ... We will keep you posted there. You can always email Coach Brandon for more information."

Brandon and Foley were this week running the Wildcats' summer league team.

The future of deBear at the helm has been the subject of recent speculation, namely that some 2012-13 varsity parents had issues with the team's direction.

Efforts for response from deBear have not been successful as of Wednesday.

The latest upheaval follows another parent-led spin of the coaching carousel at Plymouth High School just two months ago.

In May, varsity baseball coach Bryan Boyd was forced out and replaced by an interim coaching staff led by Mike George (Madonna University).

Boyd initially was put on a paid administrative leave from the baseball job (his position on the faculty at Central Middle School was not impacted) following a campaign from unhappy parents about decisions involving the program.

Boyd later resigned following the district's investigation into the concerns.

George said he was approached about taking over the team for the 2014 season but would need time to consider it.

Analysis - China's test; controlled slowdown or unemployment nightmare

The success or failure of China's efforts to revamp its giant economy may rest with workers like Hu Zhao and Deng Jindong.

They were both at a job fair in Beijing this week. Hu, a 30-year-old former factory worker, was looking for a higher paid office job. Deng, a sales manager with Ping An Insurance Co, was trying to hire sales people to sell financial products.

They represent two ends of a massive shift in the world's second-biggest economy being engineered by President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, who are trying to manage a slowdown in growth to reduce a reliance on the investment that has made the country the factory to the world.

China's leaders hope to orchestrate the shift without creating a surge in unemployment by building up the services sector to take up the economic slack as factories close down.

Failure to keep Chinese in jobs could threaten the social stability and economic prosperity that the Communist Party says justifies its one-party rule.

"The persistent weakness in the manufacturing sector will have a bigger impact on jobs," said Lian Ping, chief economist at Bank of Communications in Shanghai. "There is no room for complacency."

As Beijing shifts the economy away from manufacturing, the growth that has been the envy of the world for decades is slowing down.

In fact, it has eased in nine of the last 10 quarters. That included in April to June, when GDP rose by 7.5 percent from a year earlier, high by developed-economy standards but China's second-weakest expansion since the global financial crisis.

The government has shown little concern about the slowdown and has been vague about the growth level it sees as necessary to prevent a serious rise in unemployment. Economists estimate that level to be at least 7 percent.

But they said joblessness, rather than growth, will be the major factor driving policy. Premier Li has talked about the government safeguarding the lower limits of growth and employment, although he has not specified what the limits are.

So if jobless numbers surge, the government will take its foot off the economic restructuring pedal and step in with fresh stimulus to boost growth, analysts say.

The evidence so far suggests that Beijing has little to worry about.

Wang Yuehu, a manager at the Beijing jobs fair organised by the city government, said more people were getting employment in the services sector as manufacturing slowed down.

"Overall, the job market is stable," he said, echoing comments in recent weeks from other government officials.

Services, which took over manufacturing as the biggest economic sector in 2007, is also the biggest employer, providing 36 percent of the country's jobs compared with 30 percent in factories.

Data on sector growth is not readily available, but China's official purchasing managers' index suggests services are growing faster than manufacturing. The services measure has hovered between 53.9 and 56.7 in the past 12 months, - comfortably above the 50 mark that divides growth from contraction - while manufacturing has fluctuated between 49.2 and 50.9.

China added 7.25 million jobs in the first half of this year, a rise of 310,000 from a year earlier, the ministry of human resources and social security said. The ministry also says there were 1.07 job vacancies for each applicant in the second quarter.

Vacancies in manufacturing and construction both fell in the latest quarter, while jobs in computer services, software and property all rose.

The official jobless rate is 4.1 pct percent. But it is widely criticised by private-sector economists as an unreliable gauge largely because it has hardly changed for years, even during downturns.

What worries Beijing is a sudden drop in economic growth that would leave millions of factory workers without jobs.

The collapse of China's exports during the 2008/2009 global financial crisis left some 20 million migrant workers unemployed within months and prompted Beijing to roll out a 4 trillion-yuan ($645 billion) stimulus package that has left a debt hangover, which the country is still trying to digest.

Xi and Li hope they will not have to repeat that. They are betting that a demographic shift in China's 1.3 billion population in recent years, which means the total workforce of more than 900 million is already shrinking, will help support the shift in the years ahead.

Still, manufacturing job losses look inevitable as Beijing tackles the worst polluters and loss-making companies in sectors gripped by overcapacity as part of its economic reforms.

The official PMI factory survey indicates manufacturing employment has been falling since the middle of last year.

Reports earlier this month said China's largest private shipbuilder, China Rongsheng Heavy Industries Group Holdings, a victim of its own rapid expansion and a shipbuilding downturn, had cut 8,000 jobs.

He Keng, a former lawmaker, said the sluggish growth of real urban disposable income - at 6.5 percent in the first half from a year earlier compared to the 7.6 percent GDP growth - offered fresh evidence of weakness of the job market.

"That shows job creation is not sufficient and the job market is worse than described by official figures," he told reporters on the sidelines of an economic forum this week.

Another worrying sign is that China is also set to produce a record 7 million college graduates in 2013 but the proportion that has already secured job contracts is the lowest in years, labour ministry figures show.

The government has told state-owned firms to hire more graduates and has provided subsidies to help them start new businesses.

The key to the service sector's ability to take up the economic slack of a slowdown in manufacturing will be how quickly the government opens up the likes of financial services, insurance and logistics to private investors, said Minggao Shen, an economist at Citigroup in Hong Kong.

But even if the services sector expands steadily, many manufacturing workers may find they are not deemed qualified for the new jobs, a concern expressed by Hu at the Beijing jobs fair.

"I'm not sure if I can get a suitable job here," said the former factory worker. "I don't have any college degree."

Small Businesses Created 45 Percent of the New Jobs in June

new jobs

Small businesses continue to spur U.S. job growth. Companies with fewer than 50 employees created 45 percent of the 188,000 new jobs in June, a recently released ADP National Employment Report said.

The 84,000 jobs created by small firms represent nearly half of the jobs created by U.S. businesses and the percentage of jobs created by small companies continues to grow.

This is the second consecutive month for growth in job creation among smaller firms. In May, small businesses created 63,000 jobs, up from 57,000 in April. That month saw a major decline from March?s 72,000 jobs added by smaller companies.

Smallest of the Small Carry the Load

Also, as in previous months, the smallest of the small represented the majority of small business job creation, the ADP Small Business Report said. Between May and June, 54,000 jobs were created by businesses with less than 20 employees. By comparison, businesses with 20-49 employees added 31,000 jobs during the same period.

The results are part of an ongoing trend. In May, companies with between 1 and 20 employees created 37,000 of the 58,000 jobs credited to small businesses. And in April, businesses in the same category created 34,000 of the 50,000 jobs added by small businesses as a whole.

Where Job Growth Occurred

As usual the largest job growth occurred in the service sector with small businesses creating about 70,000 of these jobs.?The sector includes jobs pouring lattes but there are many other kinds of jobs and businesses represented as well.

The service sector includes financial, professional and business services, but also includes employees like restaurant workers, housekeepers, teachers, health care workers and retail sales workers too.

June also saw the largest increase of jobs in the goods producing sector in four months with 27,000 new jobs added, 14,000 among smaller companies. For small businesses, this sector includes mainly construction and manufacturing.

Obamacare Not Affecting Job Growth ? Yet

It?s obvious that companies with fewer than 50 employees continue to represent a growing percentage of jobs being created. Fifty full-time employees is the number at which businesses will be required under the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to provide medical benefits or pay a penalty per employee for not offering them by Jan. 1, 2015.

Still, in a prepared statement issued with the report (PDF), Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody?s Analytics, insisted:

Health Care Reform does not appear to be significantly hampering job growth, at least not so far.

Has your small business added any jobs in the last few months? ?Do you have any plans to do so in the near future?

HTC teases a 'little' phone launch tomorrow

HTC isn't being very subtle, is it? Just a couple of days after the company offered an infographic extolling the virtues of small things, it has posted a teaser picture for a small device with promises of a "'little' bit of news" on Thursday. Given the gadget's One-like appearance, it's not hard to deduce what's coming -- this is an early official glance at the One Mini. HTC doesn't have more details at this stage, although it's clear that we'll get the full scoop within a matter of hours.

Hot enough? Chill out with these frozen films

Movies

Unless you're actually in Alaska, you know full well that the U.S. is stuck in the midst of a heat wave. (And even if you're in Alaska, it's pretty warm ? Wednesday's high in Juneau is slated to be 75 degrees.) With that in mind we compiled a list of some of our favorite frozen films that might, if you use your imagination, keep you a few degrees closer to cool.

So fire up (whoops!) your DVD player or streaming service, crank the air conditioning and check out these cold little gems. Warning: Spoilers ahead!

"Fargo"
Red blood contrasts so nicely with the vast, unending whiteness of a North Dakota winter; in 1996, the Coen brothers painted extraordinary images with the snow ? remember beleaguered Jerry Lundegaard walking across a nearly stark-white parking lot? -- to create a chilly dark comedy masterpiece.

"Alive"
Want a reason to be glad you're not stuck in the middle of a winter wonderland? Start with cannibalism; when Uruguayan rugby players crash land in the Andes in this 1993 film, they've got to come up with some desperate means for survival, and one involves lunching on their late comrades (and yes, it's based on a true story). At least you have your fridge.

"Into the Wild"
Those rugby players weren't the only ones who faced potentially fatal food decisions; in 2007's also based-on-a-true-tale "Into the Wild," poor Christopher McCandless' journey around the U.S. comes to a bad end in a bus in the Alaskan wilderness after he consumes the wrong plant.

"The Edge"
If you are lost in the Alaskan wild, however, don't tangle with Anthony Hopkins. Or a bear. That's what Alec Baldwin learned in the 1997 survival film about two men ? one having an affair with the others' wife ? after the two were stranded after a plane crash and had to rely on their wits to avoid freezing to death.

"Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back"
Being stuck out in the middle of the windy eternal winter of the planet Hoth with just a dead tauntaun? Take a tip from Han Solo, who in the 1980 film helped save his friend Luke Skywalker from perishing by shoving him into the warm body of the late animal. Gross, but effective.

"The Shining"
Sometimes, it's better to be outside than in. Particularly when dad has gone a little stir-crazy in a big empty hotel. It might have been a frozen Colorado winter outside the Overlook in the 1980 film, but once Jack Nicholson got his hands on an axe, his son had to escape being hacked to death by hiding out in a snowy maze. Dad followed him into the twisty corridors and never made it out.

"The Ice Storm"
Compact and effective, the 1997 drama starring a pre-"Lord of the Rings" Elijah Wood and pre-"Spider-Man" Tobey Maguire took place over Thanksgiving in Connecticut during a winter storm that ultimately led to tragedy. Watch those downed power lines, kids!

"Ice Age"
Not every film about winter is full of bears and axe-wielding maniacs; in this delightful, lively animated 2002 film (the first in a franchise that is ongoing), a wooly mammoth with the voice of Ray Romano teamed up with an unlikely group of fellow prehistoric pals to return a human child to its parents.

"Happy Feet" and "March of the Penguins"
And what visit to the frozen wasteland would be complete without penguins? In both the animated 2006 film and the 2005 documentary, the tuxedoed little guys prove that whether they're tapping their feet or slogging it through mating season, they're bound to warm the cockles of every viewer's heart.

What films did we miss? Chill out and let us know by commenting in "Discuss" below!

College Football: Anthony Maddie leaving Western Michigan University

Updated: July 15, 2013 10:50PM

Former Aurora Christian quarterback Anthony Maddie has left the Western Michigan football program, according to a report on mlive.com.

First-year Broncos coach P.J. Fleck confirmed the signal-caller?s decision in a story filed by Western Michigan football beat writer David Drew.

Maddie impressed at times during spring practice and had edged fellow redshirt freshman Zach Terrell for the backup quarterback job to senior starter Tyler Van Tubbergen entering fall camp, the report said.

Fleck has received a verbal commitment from Sturgis (Mich.) High School quarterback Chance Stewart, who is ranked a four-star recruit and is expected to sign with WMU in the spring. Recruited by several Big Ten schools, Stewart is expected to compete for the starting job as a true freshman in 2014.

That may have influenced Maddie?s decision, who is thought to be headed to Northern Illinois, which recruited him in high school. The Huskies have three incoming freshmen ? running back Joel Bouagnon, defensive back Brandon Mayes, and wide receiver Chad Beebe ? from Aurora Christian.

Maddie, who is from Plainfield and transferred to Aurora Christian after his sophomore year at Joliet Catholic, would have to sit out a season or join the Huskies as a walk-on.

?I didn?t release him,? Fleck is quoted by Drew. ?? I?m not going to release him to an in-conference rival and with him knowing our entire system as a quarterback and say, ?Here you go. Here?s your release.? ?

2014 NFL Draft: Pre-Season Breakdown ? Dominique Easley, DT Florida

Dominique Easley is a tremendous athletic specimen for the Florida Gators but he has not been able to put everything together as a player on the field yet.? In the Gator defense, he has played as a defensive tackle and end in even fronts and a defensive end in odd.? The potential is there for him to be a tremendous player but it has not clicked for him yet.? In his junior year, Easley had 16 solo tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection.

While Easley has struggled to be the player his potential suggests he could, a breakthrough might have been reached during the time between the end of the regular season and the bowl game against Louisville.? Easley was a completely different player in that game and was a dynamic player that made a number of splash plays including getting 3.5 of his 8.5 tackles for loss on the season.? It remains to be seen if that was a genuine understanding of what he needed to address and embracing it or a one game revelation remains to be seen, but the reasons why are there on the tape.? Easley has the athleticism to go much earlier and if those strides he made in the Sugar Bowl were a preview of things to come, he could easily find himself in the top 100.? If not, he is a day three pick trying to get the light to go on in the NFL.

Vitals & Build

Easley is listed at 6?2? 280lbs and is a remarkable athlete.? He is incredibly agile and explosive with good speed, but his body control can be less than ideal at times.? Easley appears to have some solid strength but has to do a better job of taking advantage of it.? He appears to have a good amount of room to continue adding potential to his frame but the question is at what point will he start losing athleticism.? Easley might be best suited to play around 290-295lbs.

Snap Anticipation & First Step

Easley is incredibly explosive off the snap and tends to be right on with the snap count.? He is always working to get an edge and guess the count, but at times he will get caught jumping and get called for being offsides.

His first step is terrific and he is able to cover a good amount of ground while picking up speed and momentum.? The problem is that most of the time, Easley stands straight up out of his stance, so he is showing an amazing amount of power but some of it is going in the wrong direction.? In the bowl game against Louisville, Easley appeared to make an adjustment and fired out much lower, so he was that much quicker while staying lower maintaining leverage and allowing him to show off his functional strength.? The results were impressive.? If that was a hint of things to come, he could be extremely impressive.? If he gets back into old habits, he will be explosive but it will not do much for him.

Block Shedding

When it comes to block shedding, it all depends on where Easley?s pad level is.? The times where Easley comes off the ball and gives up all of his leverage, he has to win on his quickness and basically be unblocked or he is ineffective and will get stopped by inferior talents.? When he gets behind his pads and plays lower to the ground, he can be a dynamic presence on the defensive line.? He has impressive strength and can use a bull rush, push-pull move, and win with quickness either around the edge or with agility shooting gaps.? Combination of using his strength and being a lower target make him a far more difficult player for opponents to try to compete against.

Run Stopping

Pad level and leverage determine what Easley is able to do as a run defender.? When he plays high, he is reduced to trying to hold up at the point of attack and enabling teammates to make the play.? With his pad level lower and better leverage, he can hold up at the point of attack with far more ease but is also a threat to get penetration and make plays in the backfield.? He goes from being a one gap clogger and becomes a dynamic player.

Easley?s agility is impressive and he can shoot into the backfield quickly but he also has the ability to work down the line laterally and make plays all over the field.? He possesses a good amount of range as a defensive lineman.

Pass Rushing

Like with everything else, it depends on his leverage and pad level.? When he fires out with low pad level, he is faster and harder to block for opponents, giving him an advantage.? He also has more power and can take better advantage of it with ability to shove opponents back and create space to operate.? Easley has better body control and works better in small areas, which enables him to make plays on the quarterback.

He has the ability to contribute as an agile, undersized three-technique who can be a terror with quickness or he can be a dynamic edge rusher with a good ability to win with power or bending around the edge.? Easley also has excellent closing speed and can really surprise opponents with just how quickly he can get to the quarterback and from what distance.? It all comes down to his pad level and understanding that he needs to play low.

System Fit

Easley?s athleticism and strength could be best suited to play in a 3-4 as an end but his height is not ideal for it, so it could depend on arm length or a team willing to look past that flaw.? This could be less of an issue in a 1-gap system, but he could also kick inside and be a rush tackle on passing downs.? The scheme that Easley will certainly get a lot of looks will be as a 3-technique defensive tackle in the 4-3.? Whether as a starter or depth, his athleticism gives him the ability to wreak havoc on interior linemen who might otherwise struggle with quickness and athleticism.

2013 Schedule

Sat, Nov. 2 vs. Georgia
Sat, Nov. 9 at Vanderbilt
Sat, Nov. 16 at South Carolina
Sat, Nov. 23 vs. Georgia Southern
Sat, Nov. 30 vs. Florida State

Notable Games

The second and third games of the year for Easley should be good tests for him whether he plays as a tackle or end.? Both Tennessee and Miami have some talented guards and tackles that could allow him to show off some newfound technique and break out as a player or reveal that the game against Louisville was a fluke rather than genuine improvement.? The regular season finale against Florida State could be of similar importance as it could be the culmination of everything Easley has learned and his last game to show everything off in front of the home crowd.

NFL Comparison

Easley?s game could be reminiscent of Henry Melton of the Chicago Bears.? Melton was a late bloomer much like Easley and did not really show much at Texas until his senior year.? After a year of getting acclimated in the NFL, Melton became a dynamic inside presence in the Bears front that could get pressure on the quarterback in addition to playing the run.? Easley could be the same type of player if he can be consistent and take advantage of his athleticism game to game.

Draft Projection

Easley?s athleticism is tantalizing but his technique will ultimately be the determining factor for his draft stock.? If he can build off of the Sugar Bowl, he could not only be substantially improved for the NFL but also be poised to have a breakout season for the Gators.? His athleticism has never been a question, but that game just how scary he could be when he uses it properly.? The difference for the NFL could be the difference between being atop 100 pick and being a third day pick.? Easley could be ready to turn into the player Florida envisioned they were getting when they recruited him as well as position himself to be a dynamic defensive line presence.

Senate reaches deal on Obama nominees, filibusters

By Thomas Ferraro and Richard Cowan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Democrats backed away on Tuesday from a potentially historic crackdown on filibusters in exchange for a Republican commitment to stop using them to block some long-stalled nominations made by President Barack Obama.

Their agreement, reached after days of talks and jockeying for political position, will allow Obama to fill out his second-term team with top administrators to lead efforts to protect workers, consumers and the environment.

It will also allow Republicans to retain their right to stop future nominees with filibusters, which are procedural hurdles used for years by the Senate's minority to stop the chamber's majority.

"They (Republicans) are not sacrificing their right to filibuster, and we for damn sure aren't sacrificing our right to change the rules" to ban them, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, declared after tense negotiations.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said: "Put this down as progress in the right direction."

But it was unclear how much progress there was, and when another partisan fight would break out in the highly divided and often grid-locked Senate.

Republican Senator John McCain, who helped negotiate the agreement, said, "People walked to the edge of the abyss and then we walked back."

"I don't know that this is going to come again anytime soon. It may, depending on what goes on in the Senate," said McCain.

Reid thanked McCain for taking a lead role in reaching the bipartisan deal. A Democratic aide said McCain succeeded after an effort by McConnell failed.

McConnell offered to permit seven pending nominees to be confirmed, if Reid would promise not to try to strip Republicans of their right to filibuster future nominees.

"No deal," Reid told McConnell, another aide said.

The first concrete sign of agreement came when the Senate, on a vote of 71-29, with 17 Republicans joining all 52 Democrats and two independents, cleared the way for an up-or-down vote on Obama's choice of Richard Cordray to serve as director of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection.

Cordray was expected to be easily confirmed, possibly later on Tuesday, ending Republican vows to oppose him until structural changes were made in the agency that was created in 2011 to crack down on Wall Street abuses and protect consumers from financial scams.

ORGANIZED LABOR'S INPUT

Under the agreement, Reid would yield to Republican calls that Obama withdraw two nominees to the National Labor Relations Board and offer new ones.

The new ones would be picked with the help of organized labor, a traditional ally of Democrats, and Republicans would agree to confirm them by August 1, congressional aides said.

"These two nominees will be even more liberal than the current ones," a senior Democratic aide said.

"I'm pleased that the administration is going to send up two (new) nominees," McConnell said. "There will be an effort made to get them up for votes before the August recess."

Republicans have opposed NLRB nominees Sharon Block and Richard Griffin, whose temporary appointments to the board by Obama were invalidated by the federal courts. The case is now on appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Republicans have long called on Obama to offer replacement nominees.

Other nominees set to be voted on by the Senate in coming days are: Fred Hochberg to be president of the U.S. Export-Import Bank; Thomas Perez to be labor secretary, and Gina McCarthy to be head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Democrats have received assurances that the three will be confirmed.

McCain and Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, who crafted a landmark immigration bill earlier this year, came together again to find a compromise on nominations.

Their talks intensified following a three and one-half hour, closed-door meeting attended by all 100 senators on Monday night where differences were aired and members of both sides spoke out against changing the rules on filibusters.

"We came to an agreement that we shouldn't change the rules, but we should let the agencies function," Schumer said.

"I am hopeful that this would set a better tone not just for the seven on the list here, but for all future appointments," Schumer said.

Filibusters have long been a central tool in the Senate to permit the minority to extend debate and pressure the majority to compromise.

But in recent years, each side, when in the majority, has accused the minority of using the filibuster to create partisan gridlock rather than to find bipartisan solutions.

Without an agreement, Democrats have said their aim would be to reduce to 51 from the current 60 the number of votes needed to end filibusters against executive branch nominees. The party controls the Senate by 54-46.

Normally 67 votes are needed to change Senate rules, but Democrats could do it with just 51 under "the nuclear option," which would involve a ruling by the Democratic chair, which is often filled by Vice President Joe Biden, the chamber's president.

Israel Says it Has Allowed Egypt to Boost Forces in Sinai

VoA - News Tuesday 16th July, 2013

JERUSALEM Israel has allowed Egypt to boost its forces in the Sinai peninsula after Cairo requested additional troops to fight Islamist militants in the lawless region, Israel's defense minister said on Tuesday.

Sinai is largely demilitarized, in accordance with a 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace deal, but Egypt has been battling militants there who have stepped up attacks on security checkpoints since the army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi two weeks ago.

"There was a request from Egypt, a number of requests lately, for us to allow them to send more forces to handle the matter, rdquo; Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon told reporters.

"As long as they are using those forces to fight terror, and they do so according to requests from us, and they do not violate the peace treaty... we are certainly allowing them to deal with and fight the challenges the Islamists pose in Sinai.rdquo;

"The moment they finish that mission, of course, the situation will return to how it was, rdquo; Yaalon added.

Egyptian army sources have said an offensive in the Sinai against hardline Islamist militants may be imminent, though the military is now heavily focused on maintaining order in the streets of Cairo and other cities, where its armored personnel carriers and some tanks are deployed.

China's economic growth slows more as trade slumps

BEIJING (AP) ? China's leaders face new pressure to stimulate a slowing economy after growth fell to its lowest since 1991, hurt by weak trade and efforts to cool a credit boom.

The world's second-largest economy expanded 7.5 percent over a year earlier in the three months ending in June, down from the previous quarter's 7.7 percent, data showed Monday. Growth in factory production, investment and other indicators weakened.

The fifth straight quarter of growth below 8 percent is "a clear sign of distress," said IHS Global Insight analyst Xianfang Ren in a report. With investment weak, she said growth might be "at risk of stalling."

Analysts said growth could fall further in the current quarter, adding to pressure on communist leaders who took power last year and are trying to shift China from reliance on exports and investment to slower, more sustainable growth based on domestic consumption.

Chinese leaders are likely to respond by launching new stimulus to make sure growth hits their target for this year of 7.5 percent, said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk. He said that might include weakening the Chinese currency to spur exports or pumping money into the economy through higher public works spending.

"We will see some targeted measures to stimulate growth," said Kowalczyk. "They have to do something. Otherwise they will miss their target. And they cannot afford that, because this is their first year in power."

A decline in Chinese economic activity could have global repercussions, denting revenues for suppliers of commodities and industrial components such as Australia, Brazil and Southeast Asia. Lower Chinese demand already has depressed prices for iron ore and other raw materials.

Despite the slowdown, communist leaders have expressed determination to stick to plans aimed at nurturing slower and more sustainable growth.

"Major indicators are within our targeted range but we face a complex situation," said a spokesman for the statistics bureau, Sheng Laiyuan, at a news conference.

Sheng said the government's goal is to "promote restructuring" and make more of the "driving force" of the market.

Growth in factory output slowed to 9.3 percent for the first half of the year, down 0.2 percentage point from the first quarter's rate, the statistics bureau reported. Growth in investment in factories and other fixed assets in the first half declined by 0.8 percentage points to 20.1 percent. Retail sales in the first half rose 12.7 percent but that was down 1.7 percentage points from a year earlier.

"Further deceleration is possible if reforms and stimulus measures are delayed," said Alaistair Chan of Moody's Analytics in a report.

Chinese leaders have promised to launch reforms aimed at making the economy more productive and helping entrepreneurs but no major changes are expected until after a Communist Party meeting in the autumn.

Growth also has been dented by a crackdown on overly fast growth in bank lending. Government efforts to tighten lending controls caused a temporary shortage of credit in Chinese financial markets last month.

Further efforts to rein in lending, especially unregulated private lending, could hurt entrepreneurs who generate most of the country's new jobs and wealth.

The ruling party's 7.5 percent growth target for the year is stronger than forecasts for the United States, Europe and Japan, but China's weakest performance since 1991. Finance Minister Lou Jiwei appeared to try to lower expectations last week when he told reporters in Washington that growth as low as 6.5 percent would be tolerable.

The International Monetary Fund cut its year growth forecast for China last week to 7.8 percent compared with 8.1 percent in April. The IMF's forecast for 2014 was cut to 7.7 percent from 8.3 percent. The Fund's chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, said China was the country at the greatest risk of a "large decrease in growth."

Earlier this month, Beijing promised changes in its government-run banking industry, including possible creation of privately owned lenders, to increase the supply of credit to entrepreneurs and more productive companies. It gave no timetable.

"The payoff from such financial consolidation efforts will most likely show up in the medium and long-term, even if implemented successfully," said Ren of IHS Global Insight. "In the near term, the downside risk for growth has become much more elevated now than a few months ago."

Verlander no-hits Texas until 7th, Tigers win

DETROIT (AP) ? Justin Verlander's no-hit bid was finally over in the seventh inning ? and before refocusing, the Detroit ace saw his shortstop do something amusing.

"When the double was hit, and the ball came back in, everybody started cheering," Verlander said. "(Jhonny) Peralta caught the ball and looked up at the board checking the hits. That's when I knew he didn't know. I was like, 'Come on, Jhonny.'"

Verlander fell seven outs short of his third career no-hitter, but the Detroit ace looked sharp in his final start before the All-Star break, and the Tigers backed him with three home runs in a 5-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

Mitch Moreland's two-out double to right-center broke up Verlander's bid. Verlander (10-6) left the game after the seventh with a tight right quad muscle, having allowed just that one hit and three walks.

"It was just kind of starting to get tight," Verlander said. "There's really no need to push it."

Torii Hunter, Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta hit solo homers off Texas starter Martin Perez (3-2). The Rangers finished with two hits.

Verlander was picked for the American League All-Star team but was replaced for Tuesday night's event. Under baseball's labor contract, pitchers who start on the Sunday before the All-Star game may opt not to participate.

Although he also took a no-hitter into the seventh at Houston on May 5, Verlander's overpowering aura hasn't been quite the same this season. Sunday's gem lowered his ERA to 3.50.

He struck out only three but was effective anyway.

"It was a little bit different Verlander than what we usually see," Moreland said. "He mixed a lot of off-speed in there and kept us off-balance. I felt like we hit some balls hard, but it seemed like they went right to them. You've got to tip your hat to what he did, it's always a battle going against him and he's where he's at for a reason. It was a tough one for us."

Verlander no-hit Toronto on May 7, 2011. His other no-hitter came June 12, 2007, against Milwaukee.

Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Bob Feller and Cy Young are among the five pitchers with at least three no-hitters. Larry Corcoran, an ambidextrous pitcher who won 177 games from 1880-85, is the other one.

Verlander took the mound about 12 hours after San Francisco's Tim Lincecum finished a no-hitter of his own at San Diego.

The drama began building in Detroit in the fourth when Tigers left fielder Matt Tuiasosopo got turned around on a line drive by Nelson Cruz. He was able to recover and reach up for the catch.

In the fifth, Hunter ran to the corner in right to catch a flyball by Elvis Andrus. Jurickson Profar, the next hitter, sent a smash toward Martinez, who was playing first base because Prince Fielder was Detroit's designated hitter Sunday. Martinez made the stop and took the ball to first himself for the third out of the inning.

Hunter went deep in the first to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, and Martinez and Peralta hit back-to-back homers in the fourth.

Detroit added two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Peralta and Tuiasosopo, although that rally made Verlander wait a while before taking the mound again.

The following inning was when Moreland connected for the first Texas hit. Neither Hunter nor center fielder Austin Jackson had much of a shot at Moreland's drive.

"Obviously, it's one of those things you start to think about," Verlander said. "I've been there before, where I've lost them in the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth. So I guess I've ? not become accustomed to it ? but you learn to just refocus and just get the next guy. That's all I can do."

This was much better than Verlander's outing at Texas on May 16, when he allowed eight runs and didn't get out of the third inning.

Verlander has been overshadowed a bit this year by fellow Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer, who is a strong candidate to start Tuesday night's All-Star game at Citi Field in New York. But Verlander showed Sunday why he, too, is an All-Star.

"I think he's been a very good major league pitcher that has expectations that are almost impossible to live up to," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.

Verlander received a nice ovation from the home crowd after the first Texas hit, and another one when he came back to the dugout after retiring his final batter.

NOTES: Perez allowed five runs and four hits in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out four and walked three. ... Leyland said Anibal Sanchez will start Friday at Kansas City in the first game after the All-Star break, followed by Verlander, Doug Fister, Scherzer and Rick Porcello.
